PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE Cast and Crew Q&A | TIFF 2019

- Hired to paint a portrait ahead of a prospective marriage, an artist in 18th-century Brittany finds herself falling for the reclusive would-be bride, in the Cannes Queer Palm-winning fourth feature from writer-director Céline Sciamma (Girlhood).
Winner of both the Queer Palm and Best Screenplay awards at this year's Cannes Film Festival, the fourth feature from French writer-director Céline Sciamma (TIFF '14's Girlhood) is an exquisite portrait of hidden love, art, eros… and the gaze.
Set in 18th-century Brittany, Portrait of a Lady on Fire follows Marianne (Noémie Merlant), an artist commissioned by an Italian noblewoman (Valeria Golino) to paint a portrait of her reclusive daughter Héloïse (Adèle Haenel, also at the Festival in Deerskin), who is soon to be married.
The peculiar conditions of this assignment, however, require that Marianne never announce to Héloïse the objective of her visit. Instead, Marianne is to escort Héloïse on walks, posing as a hired companion while closely observing her subject so as to render her likeness on canvas in secret.
Dissatisfied with her initial portrait, Marianne petitions her patroness for a second chance. Marianne then confesses the ruse to Héloïse, procuring her cooperation and allowing the women to forge a much closer bond - one that will lead to a passionate intimacy.
Gorgeously captured by cinematographer Claire Mathon (TIFF '13's Stranger by the Lake), Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a slow burn in which every word, glance, and touch holds the promise of undiscovered territory. The film engages the emotions and the intellect in tandem, as our heroines discuss the purposes of art and life while their love builds from a spark to a blaze. Sciamma uses this stirring love story to apprehend what it means to truly see - and to truly be seen.
This is what happens when lesbian movies are made by lesbians. MASTERPIECE !!!
actually is film is inspired by Adele and Celine 's true love story!

god I wish the q&a from the second screening was recorded it was so much better
i have faith they'll upload it eventually *fingers-crossed*
They didn’t record it at all :(
But maybe an audience member recorded most of it and can upload it at some point. I recorded some but not a lot

This makes me so sad. 😢
Why it's looking like adele and noemie had a moment before the Q/A and now they can't stop smiling whenever they look at each other 😝😝😝
She should have provided chairs for this forum!
What an awkward position for Noemie, working with the Director's girlfriend! But she is divine, beautiful eyes, short hair looks cute and what a smile *.*
Was the director's girlfriend.
@@angelicacarbonilla2128 As far as I know, Adele Haenel (actress - Heloise) and Celine Sciamma (Director / Screenwriter) are a couple in real life, aren't they?
They used to. But not anymore.
@@Marina042731 they broke up before making the film but they were a couple for a long time and the role was written by Celine specifically for Adèle
The woman in the cream is fuckin weird lol , lil hyper . But in a good way she is very talented something special about her . Like a mad scientist vibe.
I cant believe I'm so late for this!
I cannot believe it too😭
I cried at the very end. I’m gonna say this, I firstly did cuz the story really touched me, but I really cried cuz man this a beautiful movie so perfect, and it saved my life. After I came out of the theater I said to myself I really love cinema and I want to stay alive to come again and see more movies like this. This women are geniuses. They are my new obsession.
Ever since I saw this movie every time I feel down I just think about how good this movie made me feel and it helps a lot.
Totally agree. It happens the same to me.
That's a beautiful comment. There are so many things worth living for and I'm glad this film made you see one of them. Once you start seeing these things more and more things are going to add until life is actually really enjoyable. I still have to see this film but I couldn't be more excited
You should watch 'The Handmaiden', it's lesbian movie masterpiece too with plot twists and happy end, you'll love it!

This movie really blew me away. It was just so well done in every aspect.
This film makes you really appreciate everything about cinema as a medium. That's why it's my personal film of the year.
Adele after explaining what she has been done to prepare for the role and suddenly “I don’t know if you understand anything but I worked before.” Best conclusion ever! 😂😂😂
Hahahaha Voila! 👏🤣👏🤣👏🤣
I think she said "but I worked it for." (à cause de la sujet-objet-verbe construction en français), meaning she put in a lot of effort into it.
and it the meantime France insults them at the Cesars by awarding that Polanski bastard and not them... I'm so ashamed. This film is history, it's magnificent and makes me proud of French cinema. They deserve all the success abroad
I know. I thought Green Book winning Best Picture was bad.
Ozybeastias Green Book winning means nothing in comparison to this

Noémie looks like a mix of Emma Watson and Lily James. I mean I’m gay and I find her so intriguingly beautiful.
she kinda looks like Tom Daley too, the Olympic diver
She reminds me of a younger Michelle Dockery as well.
@@gracerobertson3542 wtf yes
Mix of Shailene Woodley & Emma Watson to me lol
Why is no one telling how surreal Noemi is!! Throughout the movie, its her dedication that anchored the story. I love Adele but credit is due where its deserving.
Ikr. I love Adele but most of the attention is on Adele, Noemie played the greater effort. She is not even a right handed but still did well to make it believable that she is.
YES! Adele’s great and she did do a fantastic job but Noémie was unbelievably good. Her micro expressions were breathtaking! She definitely deserves more credit or atleast as much appreciation as Adèle’s getting.
Adele is legendarily gay.. I love her sooooooo very much.

I just finished it tonight. It took me two nights, as I was afraid to finish it the first time. It took me a lot of pauses before finishing, I get overwhelmed at certain moments that I had to pause and cry. After finishing the movie, I know this is one of the films that is burned in my memory and will forever have a place in my life. Some are not fleeting. Thank you Celine Sciamma. Thank you, Adele Haenel and Noemie Merlant.

The director looks classy af. I'm so proud to watch a great movie like this. All cast and crew are truly superior!!
adele is so adorable wtf
At 12:50, Adele is asked by an audience member what it's like to be a muse who turned into a collaborator. She replies that she has always been a collaborator and when prompted to go into further detail, defers to Celine who very slyly and lovingly encourages Adele to answer as they would answer the same. Immediately Adele is uncomfortable and nervous and asks Celine for help. Without missing a beat, Celine jumps in and saves her.
Idk, it's such a small moment but I've watched it many times and am moved by the love and respect these women have for one other. Not to mention how very protective they are of each other. Their friendship is something else. Chef's kiss. Goodnight.

She has those Margaret Qualley eyes 👀
I told my friend I thought she looked like Billie right after watching the movie!! Her eyes, smile,,the side profile is even more alike

I love Adele, she is just soo real, like I can see everything going on in her mind, and the energy and awkwardness is so refreshing. Dont get me wrong I love Noemie too, but she has a completely different quality about her, the class and elegance, naturally exudes from her. She honestly intimidates me (in a good way) how collected she is.
Agreed
I love how they struggle with some of the English words and help each other come up with the right one. But they all speak good English. I would like to see Sciamma’s other creations. I hope to see these two women do a sequel or another project together. I also want to read the book that they were reading in the story.
the story they were reading was the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. it's short so you can probably find a pdf version by googling it.
This movie's like fine wine. The more you watch, the better it gets.
i'm kind of in love with both of them but at the same time want them to be in love with each other
Adele’s demeanor reminds of Kristen Stewart in her earlier days. I think it’s so refreshing and cute seeing someone so beautiful and talented get a little awkward and nervous. It shows genuine humility. I’ve always been captivated by Adele when I first saw her in water lilies! It was a pleasant surprise when I found out was into girls in real life! Well... not like I ever have a chance anyway, just happy to know she bats for our team 🌈
"And so the gays (gaze) were real"
gayze
Adèle Haenel seems so nervous here and slightly startled obviously overwhelmed by the applause but she has a very intense stare 12:18 12:26 and an off kilter vibe about her.......
she does that quite often in a lot of interviews I've seen :)
I have been a fan of Adéle's for 12 years now (since Water Lilies first came out) and I have always thought that she may very well have some form of Autism/ADD. The unusual ticcing, seemingly involuntary repetitive movements, rather odd facial expressions and physical awkwardness etc really stick out a mile and seemingly point to a 'disorder' of this kind. However I just love how utterly unique and 'Adéle' these mannerisms are, and how special and 'herself' she is, and I truly wouldn't change a thing about her.
my name is lilian penih
she is captivating. She always leaves me with wanting to know about more of what is occupying her thoughts
@@sailis1809 it's obvious that she is just shy and has anxiety, nothing more. I have similar reactions when many people focus on me.
Best film I saw in 2019.
Adele is sooo awkward but in a cute way. Damn her awkwardness is a charm!!!!!
Feels more like some kind of attention-deficit disorder. Amazing that she could be so calm and composed in her acting when she's so "out there" in person.
13:14 NOTE FOR MYSELF
Definition of the muse and what's wrong with it
They're so hecking cute. I'm absolutely in love with them and this wonderful project they created. We've been blessed.
I'm in love with Noémie. That's it.
Adele's head toss in 7:47 kills me haha, she looks oddly attractive, so does Noémi, both of them spread out the celebrity vibe, classy and elegant
12:52 Adèle is so freaking adorable... I wish she would marry me
lol
4:58 *Tap tap tap tap tap *😂😂 I love her
The gay energy here is blasting my eyes
I don't know why everyone is talking about only Adele, but in case of me I'm mostly attracted to Noemie and her amazing acting skills. This was the first movie where I came across both of them for the first time and now I'm a big fan of Noemie Merlent!!!!!!!
Adele was like
11:55 = Sending data to the translation.
12:07 = *Process failed*

12:25 = OK, my patience for the language is done.
For me, it looks natural and cute. And I can feel that. >__

Ohhhh You certainly right 🤪🤪🤪
I wish I heard the questions more clearly, but I loved the applause from the people on the film. Celine is great. Wish more questions for Naomi as well.
Céline Sciamma is such a brilliant mind. The way she explained the film being contemporary is just absolutely unique, and spot on. I've seen this film x3 thus far. And am still in awe each time I view it.
This film simply took my breath away! I've loved films all my life but now I don't think I want to see any more because nothing, NOTHING, will be as beautiful as this!
I notice that Adele was more nervous in this ....it reminded me of myself, I have a lot of anxiety and have OCD and my body starts doing odd movements non-stop specially in high stress situation.. So I have always wondered if she just has anxiety
"Portrait of a lady on fire" is one of the best movies I've seen in the last 10 years. A 1/4 thru the movie I knew what was going 2 take place, I was kinda looking forward 2 it as a guy, but 1/2 half way thru, i totally forgot about that and was just simply taken away of how beautifully the film was made & acted. Best movie of 2019. As crazy as this may be, I have a similar story. I still think about if ill ever see her again. The memory of a lost love.
I've watched this profoundly beautiful film about 8 times now - it reaches down into the very depths of human emotion and helps us all to remember and not to regret.
You can tell the relationship dynamics between Céline and Adèle just from watching this interview, haha! It is adorable actually. It seems like Adèle really looks up to Céline as Cèline is so mature and thoughtful and Céline simply adores Adèle and her playfulness.

Adèle Haenel’s faces make this video a master piece.
i am totally and completely in love with adele and noemie jesus
Adèle is so socially ankward lmao I'm laughing just looking at her. It's very stressful to be in a front of an audience but even more when you have to speak in a foreign language so I understand why they seem so shy. Céline Sciamma has very interesting interviews in French but here she has a basic vocabulary.
Both lead actresses really portrayed well their characters & made me cried because the end part of the movie sort of leaving the answer to the viewers.
I got to know two actresses through this movie.
The question is, is Adele more famous than Noemi?
Many people mention Adele more, Noemi's gaze and acting were more impressive personally.
Wow! The movie is the very definition of ART, BEAUTY AND LOVE. 💕😍
