  • Acclaimed director and screenwriter Céline Sciamma joins us to talk about her career and the making of her fourth feature film, Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Fascinated by female identity and sexual fluidity during adolescence, Sciamma's 2007 debut Water Lilies explored burgeoning teenage desire among synchronised swimmers; it screened in the section Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for three César Awards, including the award for Best Debut. Her second film, Tomboy (2011), depicted a 10-year-old transgender child, premiering at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival and was subsequently shown in French schools as part of an educational programme. In 2014, Sciamma completed Girlhood, which she considered the final part of a thematic coming-of-age trilogy, following Water Lilies and Tomboy. Girlhood screened at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival and the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. In between directing her own films, Sciamma continues to work as a screenwriter for other directors, including André Téchiné, with whom she co-wrote the screenplay for his 2016 film Being 17. In 2017 Sciamma won the Cesar Award for Best Writing for her adaptation of Gilles Paris' 2002 novel My Life as a Courgette. Her latest film, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, premiered In Competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Queer Palm and the award for Best Screenplay.

I'm here almost 5 years later. I don't have enough words to describe how much I love Céline Sciamma's works. I've only managed to get to watch Water Lilies when it first came out at the local cinemas way back then, and then with much difficulty, managed to buy a DVD of POALOF but she's hands-down my favourite film-maker. This is by far the best interviews I've come across that I feel she truly deserves. Her passion, dedication, care and how she works with others shine through. Never mind those who couldn't understand the masterpieces she's created. And thanks very much to Tricia Tuttle and the audiences asking sensible questions.
It was really thanks to Sciamma that I managed to connect with the painter on Instagram, even though I'm in a different continent. Now I'm on a mission to try find a way to get hold of all of her other works. 🙏

I love the way she fields all of the questions. She is charming and funny. She defended the fact that most of her creations are women centered brilliantly. I want to watch every movie she has directed. Some are hard to find here because of its foreign status. I watch POALOF over and over because although their relationship is a slow bloom, it moves steadily and the communication is superb. I love the song (Non Possum Fugere)? Not sure on the title. But it was the only music she used and it was unique and original. It was beautiful. (Music Lover here). Celine Sciamma is my muse. I can’t wait to see what she develops next.🥰❤️. I am a fan🌹💕. She has known and even dated Adele Haenel and I am interested in why she decided to cast Noemie Merlant opposite Adele. They were delightful together. Definite attention getters. Great Interview. This woman has great vision and even with some of the controversial things that happened in this movie, it has become a worldwide work of art and brilliance. Well Done Celine.

Same here! The music was original and as soon as one hears the chant, one cannot NOT know that the music is THE SOUNDTRACK for POALOF! I watched in another interview that she had wanted to create a piece that convokes witchery, that is polyphonic and the composers were right on spot with the piece. Even though the music was minimal but I also wanted to point out what a fine job the sound department did for the film. If you just listen to the waves, the echoes, the footsteps, the rustling of the leaves...and even the silence, the team has made a poetic soundscape, in my humble opinion.

Same here! I've yet to find anything else that will topple it....Maybe until I've managed to watch all of other of Sciamma's works? Lol! People kept asking her is there such a thing as a female gaze? Yes, of course there is! It's a feeling that can be felt by the audience, and so far the only other director that I was able to get this feeling from watching a film is Todd Hayne's Carol. I loved Carol too but POALOF is on another level.

There’s also a fascinating RUclips interview with Celine Sciamma where she discusses her process and viewpoint in depth. I think if you search Sciamma and Tricia (the interviewer) you’ll find it. @Sharon Bardonner, I have watched many interviews. Is there another-than this one- with Tricia? I did see her BAFTA(?) talk I think, on her process. She really is shifting the paradigm, I just keep getting more insights from her and this movie. She gives me hope. She looks like a lesbian Marcel Proust with long hair and a Wes Anderson character all at once. She is amazing! I still don't understand how, at least in the West, there are still people that feel threatened by films like this one. The whole film was so tame in comparison to other 'lesbian period pieces' mostly directed by men! People need to get a life!

With all due respect, I believe it may be due to Copyright Infringement matters - both on RUclips’s terms and perhaps the films’ themselves. Films and any Clips of them, are considered Intellectual Property, I believe. I also wanted to see the clips though, it would have been a richer experience if we knew exactly what Celine was referring to when speaking of her films.

DESCANSA CELINA, CERTAMENTE O DIA TROUXE DESGASTE EXCESSIVO. A AUSÊNCIA DE DIALOGO E COMUNICACAO PERVERSA ME INCOMODA. É TÃO MAIS SIMPLES LIGAR, AGENDAR E DEFINIR OBJETIVAMENTE. EU, NÃO TENHO A INTENÇÃO DE CAUSAR TRANSTORNO, MAS, É ISSO QUE ACONTECE POR FALTA DE COMUNICAÇÃO DIRETA. DESCANSA
