    Zone 2 being labeled as "fat burning" instead of "aerobic base building", "mitochondrial training", "capillary building", "recovery capacity training" or "Ventrical hypertrophy" was a big mistake. We could have named it for any of the things at which it excels, but instead we went with "fat burning".

    Excellent content as usual. I dont often comment but wanted to give kudos to how well-informed, concisely structured and engaging Eugene’s videos are. While the caloric deficit leading to fat loss isnt anything new, the perspective on how your body balances out fat usage and carb usage both during exercise and throughout the day (BMR and NEAT) was very well put. Good notes also on using exercise and burning zones for their appropriate purpose and to match goals of strength building and aerobic base building. Its a sub from me!

      so true! all these time i tot "fat burning" mean our body fat is burned. infact, its actually the fat that we're eating. this is such a mind blown information, I've been fooled for so long. Thank you Uncle Eugune!

    • @QuadraQuack
      @QuadraQuack 2 года назад +2

      Good point. Although there are many other health benefits to Keto and I feel much better when that's the way I eat predominantly. It's also made it much easier for me to do intermittent fasting.

    • @Dan-uh9sg
      @Dan-uh9sg 2 года назад +2

      100% correct. Keto's "fat adaptation" may (there are studies on both sides of this) make you burn your own body fat slightly easier, but the real benefit to it is that you end up eating fewer calories because fat and protein are more satiating than a starchy diet. However, most people can get most of the benefit with portion control and reducing consumption of starchy foods. This is why other low carb and "slow carb" diets are also effective. Some people can lose weight on a high carb diet because it forces them to eat more bulky vegetables and grains to feel full instead of highly processed foods. In the end, it's all about energy intake and expenditure.
      The reason any restrictive diet works is because it's easier to get used to being bored sometimes and get used to eating fewer calories with a restricted set of foods than it is to eat whatever you want and accurately calculate calories (which most of us can't do).
      Additionally, some restrictive diets "work" because people slowly whittle down to eating very little because they get obsessed or impatient, but that's a different story. Non-disordered eating that restricts calories a reasonable amount is the safest and most consistent way to lose weight barring medical intervention.
      Exercise certainly does "help" at least for some people. I've always had an easier time losing weight if I'm also exercising regularly because I tend to start focusing on eating foods that make me better at my workouts, and I don't crave the dopamine hit from food as much if I've just powered through some cardio or weights. But, you can gain some muscle and make good cardio progress and not lose an ounce of fat if you just end up eating your energy expenditure back. It's also common to get really hungry after exercise and eat MORE than what you used. It's a weird balance to have to strike.

      @@Dan-uh9sg thats a long ass paragraph. after all, any diet works as long ure on deficit and it goes to own individual preference. if they like fatty food go keto, if they like carb go for it. fun fact there is none super athletes in the world go keto tho lol

    I recall listening to a Ted Ex lecture explaining these concepts at the time I didn't realize how breathing ends up becoming the thing that ends up burning calories. This concept alone helped me a lot in weight loss because I was working out without rest days, and **that** led me to being hungry later on because I was overdoing it, and thus causing my brain to tell my body to burn less, and causing a plateu.
    The key then, was to eat more and workout less, while maintaining a reasonable calorie deficit. The whole experience ended up opening my eyes to the idea that working out should be used to build strength and endurance, and just like you mentioned, leave the diet to be your weight loss catalyst.

    Hey eugene, great video! Just wanted to share that even tough the EPOC burns fats afterwards, and our basal metabolyc rate does too, it is more eficient to lose fat if you workout on especific zones of your VO2max. I think what people misunderstand the most is that the zone in which you use more fat as energy (20~30% vo2max) is such a light exercise that you could increment it to 50~60% vo2max and even tough you are using more carbs in this zone your overall fat usage is higher!

    • @marianschoeller8764

      You worded and summarized really well all my grievances. People have bad preconceptions about cardio or had bad previous experience / have been or are being misled into having to do this "fat burning zone" or quite the opposite extreme "HIIT cardio or dont even bother". Where as both extremes are useful tools but ineffective ways to burn calories long term.
      And regardless of the calories burned people completily overlook the use cases of the methods (some of the Eugene mentioned in video) and their health benefits.
      All what people care about is burning calories and yet they cant even do that properly. Like you have mentioned people often defaulting to the 20-30% of vo2max, where its stupid easy, end up doing hours of cardio on end, giving up on cardio because at 20-30% you burn negligable amount of calories, and then end up blaming either the law of thermodynamics or cardio as form of energy expenditure.
      And again like you have pointed out if majority of people would just crank it up to 50-60% they would just get way more bank for their buck both calories burned but also health benefit wise when it comes to conditioning. You are still at the point where its mostly pros with very little cons.
      I have thought often about this why these bad takes stem from of the sort "cardio is ineffective", "HIIT or bust" etc. And it always stems from point of ignorance, where they only have very limited experience with cardio and often have only experienced the very extremes points of the spectrum and end up disregarding the whole thing. Or what is often also the case is lazyness / delusion. Because they are either too lazy or their identity is tied to a one thing.
      Be it gym bros, low intensity cardio andies or "HIIT or bust" nutjobs. Instead of having a balance of everything and understanding the use case and validity of each or instead of just saying "Hey I am not bothered this is not for me", instead what they end up doing is making up theories in their head of why what they are doing is the only way to go about it, and how all the other ways are invalid (which can be disproven in matter of seconds yet you cant argue with someone who didnt come to their conclusions with rationale).
      The well worded statement has for sure sparked my mind to expand on the topic. Thanks for attending my TED talk.

    Here for the algorithm - and also seriously amazed how you do most of your videos in one single take with very little superfluous words - since Im also a content creator, would love to hear a little bit about your content creation process. If i remember correctly you said, you script them out beforehand? Also with the reels and stuff like that?

    All you really have to do is look at bodybuilders. They aren't doing all these super intense HIIT sessions to get down to 6% bodyfat. Its usually more akin to something like walking on a treadmill.

    Eugene how much can you bench, dip, incline bench, deadlift, and squat? Your chest and legs look great and you are much leaner than me but about the same height. I realize it can show up much differently especially with how we train but I’d like to get an idea. Thanks

    Once again, I'm in awe of the way you're capable of explaining these difficult and sometimes misleading concepts in simple terms. Thanks for the explanation!

    Super informative video! It got a little confusing since I think you reference both dietary fat and body fat at certain points as just “fat”/“fats”, but I think I understood you 😬

    Thanks Eugene! I learned about this “fat burning” zone back in high school, in a health class nonetheless lol. Ever since I blindly chased that zone without ever questioning it.
    Sometimes a little bit of knowledge is more dangerous than none. Extremely well said!
