    Really glad to see One Page Rules getting more attention. The models are really good (better than some GW stuff) and the rules for Grimdark Future are a lot more balanced than 40K proper. I've been busting out my old retired 40k stuff that hasn't been competitive or even part of the game in years, and happy to get it back on the table. While I never played much fantasy stuff (I'm much more of a sci-fi/cyberpunk geek, lol) I do enjoy it here and there, and this seems like a good option for fantasy tabletop stuff. I have a couple of friends who are very into fantasy games, so this might be right up their alley as well

      I think becoming a a home for old models is one of OPR's biggest strengths for sure. And with such a wide range of options your friends bound to find something they vibe with from the offerings!

      @@CementSaul I know one of my friends that is going to probably play with the rat-men or lizard folk. He likes those beastly armies. I have a bet with myself that my brother plays dwarves of some kind, because he saw the old Warhammer 40k Squats and fell in love with them, and I am predicting he goes the same route here, lol. Personally, I'm interested in doing an undead army myself. Some of those models are just awesome.

      It seems to try to simplify simulation but does it make it a good game, with many interesting, non-obvious and relevant decision points for thr player which are more impactful than dice rolls?

    • @robertchmielecki2580
      @robertchmielecki2580 2 года назад

      Or is it more like GW games with simplistic decisions and board states followed by a dice fest that rules it all, just without all the rules bloat? In other words is it more chess or playing with toy doldiers as a kid?

    I'm glad there was a review of this quality. I would have liked to hear about the armies you used and how they felt like for the grimdark skirmish one page rules. Thank you still.

      Glad it was helpful! I was pretty over skirmish/firefight when I finished up this review, so I didn't bother with the specifics to keep the video short. Thanks for the appreciation though!

    Man, I love the thought and effort you put into everything you say on this channel. Can't wait to see the Regiments review! I wonder how it stacks up with Oathmark.

    • @CementSaul
      @CementSaul  3 года назад +4

      Cheers! From first impressions, it's narrower, deeper rules focus (Oathmark) vs a much wider breadth of units and factions (Regiments). Oathmark also has a more considered campaign system, for what that's worth!

    I really appreciate the OPR content. I'm pretty interested in seeing how Warfleets goes to be honest. I'm still sinking my teeth into the AoF and GF but the flexibility is pretty cool, especially the narrative angle could make things interesting.

      Glad you enjoyed! Regiments is just the core system, which is the same in all the base OPR rulesets, recontextualized via rank and flank rules. It's pretty neat.

    • @CementSaul

      Yep, it's on the list! Might take a bit to prep for the models though, as the aesthetic is very specific.

    Very interesting review. I agree with your opinion quite a bit. The only thing I dislike about skirmish is the fact that the existing armies are very badly balanced here and there. I’ve tried beastmen, goblins and some others and the power tilt was considerable.

    • @CementSaul
      @CementSaul  2 года назад +2

      Yeah it's bound to happen when the system insists on representing everything that GW's ever offered. It's playability for the sake of balance, and I can respect that.

    My only issue with this game is that the darling stand-out army "Dutchies of Vinci".
    It's basically more advanced than most sci-fi races (robots, drones and self-repairing machines... is this fantasy?).
    But that's not the worst way they affect this game: if the race weren't broken as far as rules I think people would feel more comfortable with the profit motives that need to be called into question.
    (If you didn't know it has argubly the best shooting, cavalry, cheap mount- some things are auto-include via secondary army just to keep the skirmish game balanced).
    If it weren't being sold & profited from, I would have a whole, whole lot more faith in the direction this game is pointed.

    Is this a bit like Mordheim? Small warbands fighting in a ruined city.

    • @CementSaul
      @CementSaul  2 года назад

      Kind of! It's similar in structure (small warbands fighting) but isn't as concerned with Mordheim's specific theme, or elaborate linked campaign rules. OPR does have campaign rules but they're much simpler. I'm not sure if they've put out a Mordheim-like supplement yet, although they do have one for Necromunda.

    initial thought in first seconds of video: "warcry but simple" how do you get more simplified than that without just getting boring?

    • @CementSaul
      @CementSaul  2 года назад +2

      That's a valid criticism of OPR, actually. It addresses it by providing loads of optional rules, but the core system really is one of the simplest you'll ever play. There's a lot of power in that though!

    • @DarrinSK
      @DarrinSK 2 года назад

      @@CementSaul that was just my initial thought when you said that. I am going to try these rules out. I am toying with my own attempt at a skirmish level coop game in the vein of 5 parsecs right now. Excited for 5 leagues

    • @thingsmac
      @thingsmac 2 года назад

      OPR had a lot of options for Skirmish level, especially when you consider the diversity of armies & combining 2 of them. Have you read through everything?

    "I would have been far more negative in the review had I paid $5 for each of the rule books"
    I mean it's the price of a cup of coffee.. not a huge investment to help support the development and creators... Talk about penny pinching, miserly and cheap, we are all sick of paying GW extortionate prices but this is beyond a petty comment.

    • @CementSaul
      @CementSaul  3 года назад +7

      I don't feel it's petty at all? Imagine you're new to OPR and first encounter them through wargame vault. You spend the 10 USD on the two small scale systems to see what they offer (this is what I almost did).
      After going through them you realize the portion of the books that are paid for are, mechanically, almost exactly the same. You've basically paid for different insert art (some people might be fine with this!). Later on you find out that for what you paid you could have gotten all of their systems, plus that month's set of digital minis, while also contributing to them more directly through patreon.
      I think a lot of people would find that a little bit frustrating!
