- Kyle is in Phoenix where he takes you for his first drive of the Hummer EV. In this video he discusses the sizing, comparing it to a Rivian R1T parked next to the Hummer, drives the vehicle in the city and on the highway testing the acceleration with Watts to Freedom, driver assistance with SuperCruise, and the charging speeds using an Electrify America DC Fast Charger.

The fact that every ev RUclipsr ever released a hummer EV video at the same time and Kyle’s video is significantly more in depth is awesome, keep up the nerdiness, Kyle! Thank you!
This is so much better than any other review out on this now because you actually know what you're talking about eith electric vehicles, dont mix up kw and kwh like almost every other journalist 🙄 and go in depth with how the battery and chassis work and go out on your own which no other journalist has done, thanks Kyle 👍
TFL has also did previous clips with Rivian Truck and towing a trailer on a journey +some other fresh tests with the GMC Hummer ev
Throtle House boys also took both Rivian R1T & GMC Hummer EV performing a drag along with a Tesla X..
Ohh and BTW i'm European, i really love every review about EV's.. imo both these trucks would be so welcome and useful over here since we don't really travel such long distances to visit relatives or to reach cool destinations..
From tech, to vehicle dynamics, no one does it better than Kyle. Thank you for this welcomed driving introduction to the new Hummer EV.
The battery confidence comes from how much R&D was spent on the originally Chevy Volt. They put in a pack that was restricted to 20-80% but it looked like 0-100 for you. That's why many original Chevy Volt owners have seen almost no degradation in their battery pack health. So already the battery pack is super conservative in terms of staying healthy, but then they also have software that slowly expands the capacity as any loss happens, allegedly. Lots of reddit discussions on this. Obviously different chemistry now, but the Volt work was no joke from an engineering stand point.
Expanding the usable battery capacity as the battery ages seems like it would only accelerate wear on an already aging pack.
@@directorjustin I don’t know if they actually do, but it’s what some claim they do.
@@directorjustin Yeah, but making it actually charge 20-80% all the time even if you charge it from 0-100% will prolong the battery life by like 3-4 times
People don't know how advanced GM is in battery and EV tech. Their patents are vast and deep, it's just not talked about

Nobody gives me a better understanding of how a car feels (apart from actually driving it) than Kyle. 👍
"the ultimate miami crossfit vehicle" is just so perfect lol
LOL!
Idk who else needs it but Kyle’s impression of the brakes is the happiness I needed today 😂 (24:50)
Oh dang, I've been waiting for this one.
Great review as always!
Goalie gear transport should be a standard test lol.
Pack them with kitesurfing gear!
I wish more auto makers would incorporate the steering wheel paddles for on-demand regen control. Especially the trucks.
My current EV has them and i use them constantly.
As somebody who has rented EVs with these paddles and never understood them, Why? I'm the type to set it and forget it.
@@asimo3089 I came from sports cars & manual transmissions. This is another level of control over the car; the ability to change on the fly. Similar to a manual vs automatic discussion. It brings an engaging dynamic.
In an e-truck, this would be useful when towing/hauling in the mountains.
My current EV may be a family car, but in the mountains I drive with purpose, using the paddles to exploit its potential. It has a "set it and forget it" mode as well.
@@asimo3089 Because sometimes you want to coast, some times you don't.
@@asimo3089 regen paddle gives a much more predictable deceleration than using the brake pedal, which can improve ride experience.
When you were pulling out of the parking lot the 3kW may have been the battery conditioning you selected on before heading out. Great review on your first drive of the "EV Beast"
Tax credits ended in 2020 when I bought my Bolt EV Premier Kyle!
That thing just looks so fun
Great video Kyle keep up the great content
Been waiting for this. Nobody else covering charging. Hoping my silverado isn't delayed even more!
A friend of mine used to have an H2 in Switzerland. He was mostly hated there for it. When we drove it to Italy, people were screaming in joy seeing it.
And now, GM proudly presents the brand-new 1959 Cadillac electric truck.
I’m a recent subscriber. Recently purchased a 2022 ionic5 SEL. coming from tuner cars and internal combustion engines my whole life this channel is really helped me learn a lot. You guys are doing a great job!
Lovely review of this vehicle. The best I have seen so far. Thank you.
If automakers are partnering with Electrify America, they need to hold EA accountable.
GM has partnered with EVgo. Their Ultium funded chargers are 500A capable.
Who has Volkswagen Partnered with ?
@@Allison11111 Volkswagen owns Electrify America.
@@brandenflasch Oh no 😅.I live in the North.
I would love to see that thing drive down the road but also hate it if it parked next to me in the parking lot lol
Good to see this after seeing you drive down there in the Rivian.
love your reviews Kyle
I'd love a series on the "best" charging station where you can actually get 350kW, for example.
How about one that doesn't charge triple the cost of electriity? Electrify America charges 48 cents per kwh, my home rate is 14 cents.
Why? Cuz you have no choice when traveling.
@@crankychris2 Your home never pulls anywhere near the power it takes to charge your car.
@@DblOSmith I'm a Union Electrician and people ask me 'Chris, how many kw's should my next[ genset be and i say do you need hvac, hot water and a dryer? If so, 12KW. I do without these during an outage, so my 1998 4kw Generac is fine, my load runs about 2500 watts. An EV can supply 2 kwh for 36-48 hrs, but then your EV will be drained with no way to recharge. I hope this helps.
Great review! This crab walk feature is impressive! Thank you for sharing, Kyle! ⚡🔌🚙
I'm guessing steering characteristics would improve with higher psi.. It's heavier than my 1 ton and I keep 70 psi in my tires. 44 psi steering would be very sloppy.
Hummer EV is the first all-electric Brodozer.
Just barely ahead of the cybertruck
Kyle your face on the Watts To Freedom launch said it all.
Pretty good Tie Fighter impression under heavy braking, Kyle! 😂
This guy kills reviews. New subscriber here. Keep it up
Drove right through my neighborhood! Wish I could’ve seen some drive by.
You are awesome, I learn more from your reviews than anyone else.! Any where
Even at 1.2mi/kwh that's like 11 cents per mile. So way cheaper than any gas truck
In my area Electrify America charges 43 cents/KWh, unless you pay a $4 monthly fee, in which case it’s 31 cents/KWh. At 1.2 miles/KWh for the Hummer and 43 cents/KWh, that’s 35.8 cents/mile. At 31 cents/KWh, that’s 25 cents/mile.
@@guycocoa211 Charge it at home = much cheaper.
This is a really clear and concise review touching on all the aspects about the New Hummer EV that i was curious about. Thanks!
Just insane, great to see the tech in this GM is really up to snuff, are you watching Kia and Hyundai? Must say for initial impression, yes looking really good.
Impressive review Kyle! And a question: If this were a true 800V platform would that have changed the charging rate at all in your test? Is there any other car currently on the market that could have pulled more kW on that exact same charger?
Oh wow I never thought about this but you mentioned the weight of this truck around 10,000 lbs and then I saw the neighborhood bridge sign that said weight limit 3 tons. Now I have to worry about the electric vehicle I buy to make sure I can get home hehehe
Part of owning a Hummer is you don’t give a shit about anything or anybody else 😎
My Tesla MX preconditions the battery every morning Mon-Fri around 6AM. It only takes a few minutes. The schedule is configurable in the app if my routine ever changes.
Got a kick of you testing all the handling in Paradise Valley. They're crazy about speed cameras and ticketing everyone they can. You got lucky! Drove right by my condo complex in the middle, shame I missed it.
absolutely awesome, obviously not for everyone but incredible just the same
Love your vids kyle
BeamNG Drive!! The only game purchase I haven't regretted!
Any idea on range at highway speeds? Hearing it’s abysmal at 75+mph. Love EVs BTW. This thing is just redonk
One of possibly three people that would ever do something with this other than take it to the country club.
As usual, Kyle slays the review. Kudos! Grotesque vehicle for Dozer Bros.........

Where's the video of off-roading the Rivian we were promised?
What was it like again when you push the brake? 😁
Great review as always! However it's disappointing to see almost every new EV use the same interior aesthetic, two screen rectangles.
That's pretty most every new car coming out today. Seen the Audis? Three screen rectangles.
@@joetacchino4470 No one is original anymore.

Kyle - The Hummer is running Android Automotive. Same system as the Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 Recharge. You can see all the Google apps, Google Play Store, and Google Assistant apps on the screen. Google allows automakers to put their own skin on the user interface, but cars that build in the Google Automotive Services get the Google apps pre-installed. 🙂
My thing is… if I’m in the market for an electric big off-roader pickup, I’m not thinking about the Rivian. And vice versa if I was looking for a regular sized vehicle. If I buy a Hummer, I know it’s not as efficient. That’s not what I’m buying it for if I was a Hummer customer. (I’m a Hummer future customer)💀
48:56 I got a little anxious right there.
You say there's no point in comparing this Hummer to a Rivian, that there's no one cross shopping them. Though my wife and I are indeed doing that and I suspect there are many others that are as well. Despite them being themed differently they are actually pretty similar in price, size, features, and being the two first electric pickups/SUVs on the market like that. Minus the marketing they really are more similar than they might seem (including in both being crazy heavy and less efficient than some other electric vehicles). So I would LOVE a comparison between the two, where each one makes sense or not etc. Especially since you spent so much time with the Rivian and seemed to like both. Exterior, interior, features, where each excels etc. Please consider sharing your experiences. Also which you would choose.
Watching them change the tire got me thinking. With a vehicle that features air suspension such as this or the rivian, could you theoretically change a tire without a jack? Put the vehicle in the highest setting, stack a bunch of boards/bricks under the vehicle near the bad tire, then set the suspension to lowest. Since the truck can’t come down, the wheel would come up right?
If it has rock sliders sure but I know the Rivian doesn't and I'm not sure about the Hummer.
I'm a bit surprised by the quality of the UI. It has a lot going on, but it does seem to be much less well designed when compared to your Rivian videos from this last week.
Automatic thumbs up for the BeamNG reference. I was literally just thinking how much I hope someone releases a Gavril D-Series EV mod.
27:11 Wow, wirelessly? Sounds nice! FOR JAMMING!!!! 😆
A lot of cool features, but the Rivian is still for me. That UI and screen in the Hummer, woof. Looks like an early Windows UI.
That lane change! Looks like a damn marshmallow on wheels! 😆 🤣
How long does it take to charge the EV hummer with a level two charger 48amps ? Thanks
Not crazy about braking based front torque vectoring as a design choice in something this heavy. Still, it works, and I guess they had their reasons.
Someone needs to pull this beast with a semi at full regen!! Thatd be a dope video to see. I wish tesla would let you maximize regen
The seat backs have storage.
Please don't try to squeeze that Hummer in next to me at Electrify America!
It would be nice if they had spots that EV trucks were not allowed to use.
@@lanceareadbhar oh ffs go cry into your soy latte elsewhere
Kyle, how in the world can you charge at a charging station if you tow with this or silverado ev, with the charge port at the rear?
Thats where the cybertruck port will be
Eventually there will be pull through charging stations.
I love the new hummer cant wait to see the suv version of it and yeah i agree price wise it almost seems cheap compared to the rivian.
I been kind of wondering are they going to have the infrastructure to handle all the new EV that are coming out. I live in Northern New York and have a Kia Soul ev. And there I think there is only one fast charger in Watertown I don’t think there is any in Utica NY.
Watertown? Ugh...
How do you charge then?
Damn impressive truck, I hope the Silverado EV is as good, I live in a big city and need a smaller truck.
Watch Bjorns latest EV6 GT on the Autobahn. I think the Kia got like 340 kW regen. Crazy!
Basically it’s full 370kw power train in reverse. That kind of regen
I wish every performance electric car could do that, but thermals are the limiting factor
PLEASE TEST THE RANGE!!!!!!
MAY BE COMPARED TO OTHER EVs SUCH A RIVIAN
As much as I love the Rivian and want it to come to Germany I cannot see me in this beast. It fits the US I guess but only there. Super unefficient, extra large - somehow not fitting the times we are currently in. But yes, way better than the other Hummers...
In most European countries you wouldn't even be allowed to drive the hummer with a regular driver's license. If Rivian comes to europe, i'll definitely consider buying it.
Europeans live dull over controlled lives.
I live in the states and I think the Rivian is a pig of a vehicle......I couldn't even think of owning this humongous tank of a vehicle.......If the idiots at GMC think they are going to sell this to the masses they are delusional.
@@Riley_1955 they will sell every single one they make
@@Riley_1955 No one at GMC thinks this is a vehicle for the "masses". Not everything needs to be for everyone.
At this point somebody has to make a mashup video of all of Kyle’s sound effects alone
51:00 Higher amperes gives much higher losses. The EV makers can help them self by designing their cars with higher voltage within a given class. For a class 800 V battery like Hummer they should made top voltage ~920 V, for a class 400 V it should be ~460 V, e.g. like Audi (Q8 forerunner) E-tron SUV and Jaguar I-Pace. That would give you ~15% higher power for the same "low" current, so 240 kW => 276 kW.
Looks good! But from a company that closed its plant in Dayton, OH and reason given by the GENIUS CEO was higher gas prices and plummeting vehicle sales? No shit! They knew then, mate. And kept on building gas guzzlers. Wonder if GM would make anything electric if it wasn’t for Tesla. Maybe I know nothing. And GM and Ford have been working on EV for a very, very long time and were just waiting for the perfect opportunity to broadcast they are going all Electric in near future. Love the videos, and all different content. Keep rocking, mate! Cheers! 🍻
Rivian was an easy choice before the price increase. Now, do you buy the hummer or Rivian since they are both around 100k?
The two tone interior is horrendous. Reminds me of the earlier bolts
the Rivian with 35"s only has a 250ish mile range. maybe 260? It only has the similar range with the smaller road tires. That has been overlooked by every review I have seen.
These giant electric SUVs/trucks will really dampen some peoples' spirits when they realize that even 250 KW charging sucks when you only get 1 mile per KWh. Smaller/more aerodynamic cars will have to charge 1/3 as long!
$95k for a midsize truck that is at the mercy of charging availability blows my mind. At these prices they’ll never be common unless the financing gets absolutely comical
Nice nice driving
Need you to do an actual 70mph driving range test please..
Amazing review, HELL YA AMERICA.
Any chance Tesla could implement that “no hands on the wheel as long as your eyes are on the road” feature for autopilot?
Their system isn't safe enough for that.
They'd likely need to add another ... or better driver facing in-cabin camera to enable that. They won't do it because they really just want to get to no hands ever.
What kind of Jack do you need to jack this up and replace a tire???
Miami Crossfit mobile!? 😆
I and your Viewers would like to see 2 things first the towing range of the hummer 2nd a three way comparison of the 3 ev ford platinum Lightning i work truck vs the life style trucks hummer and rivian the Point I try to make is the hummer and rivian are life style and are not meant for the working man so as good as you make this ev sound the big problem is hoping that the charging station is working and that you will make it there also let’s no forget that if they are life style meaning camping out that any thing that you plug in and draw power from will decrease your mileage range there are many imitations such as the cold will decrease battery range not to mention heat when driving EV I think the best solution for these trucks would be if they were plug-in hybrids it would be the best of 2 worldsI love to hear your thoughts on this
When these EVs are doing regen braking, you aren’t applying the brake pedal, do the brake lights still come on?? I can see a lot of people getting rear ended if that EV can stop without you hitting the brake pedal.
GM EVs do
Yeah, they do, but I feel like they don't come on quite early enough if you want it to be analogous to an ICE vehicle. IMO, you have to decelerate at the same rate as downshifting a manual transmission before they come on. At least that's how I feel it is in my Model 3.
I think they should tune the brake lights to be a bit more sensitive. In mild traffic where you're lightly decelerating is where it seems the most troublesome to me.
Trashball teslas dont immediately but this truck does
In the bolt ev it does
The hummer EVs 51/43 mpge (city/highway) make it less efficient than all Toyota Hybrid Sedans. Insane how power hungry the Hummer EV is.
Many of the features being described derive from the Bolt EV. Does the Hummer EV also come in regular and extra crispy?
Hope not. I think the Hummer has the redesigned Ultium batteries.
Which features are those troll?
