I have absolutely no idea how and what the problem ultimately is or was with Duran. I'm assuming that no one here knows this 100 percent!
Maybe Villa's side or the player himself hung around for too long, I don't know.
But anyone who thinks Niklas Fullkrug is a joke or something like that should be told that if someone fits in England, then it's Fullkrug! Even if it’s “just” for two or three years! He works and fights, real penalty area striker, knows where the goal is, prepares many goals himself, can save balls, fantastic shot, very good header player, really works his ass off, etc.! The sum is nothing special by Premier League standards, right? You are generally already beyond good and evil anyway! Nobody in your league needs to think seriously about that these days! And when was the last time West Ham had a real thoroughbred striker? Remained in the Champions League final last season. Nobody knew why he didn't play at the European Championships from the start and when he came on as a substitute, he was more than convincing!
And from Dortmund to West Ham is not necessarily a promotion, despite all the love! I would be happy if I were a West Ham supporter! And you also gain time to continue looking for young strikers!

It appears obvious your pissed off Nick. This emotion appears to have influenced your confusing “truth”. One moment blaming Sully, another moment blaming Tim. I think they simply gave Villa a final deal, which I heard with add ons, was worth up to 36-37 mil, close to Villa’s asking price of 40mil but Villa didn’t budge and we looked elsewhere. Fullkrug may be a different style striker, but one who appears good enough to fit well into the team and contribute assists and goals, despite his age. However, if we are ambitious enough, we could still get Duran too, as well as another CB, given the savings from Guido’s free and offloading Ings and/or Antionio?

@@ClaretandBooze Think that's just because they've not been very good, or gone to struggling sides. Havertz is now a key player for Arsenal, Werner was never really a striker, and Haller was not really a true flop...but didn't remotely suit the style of play we had. Don't think you can judge the players from an entire league in one go. He might flop he might not, but his style is a more natural for for this manager than someone who chases up and overs into the channels.

People are allowed to make mistakes and NOT grabbing Duran when Villa were desperate was a huge oversight.
lop plays possession football, patient build up, he needs a striker that others can play into and play off, duran is a speed merchant who shoots on sight, he can't do what fullkrug does, maybe with some development, but right now he's quality suits a counter attacking system, playing off the shoulder
fullkrug makes sense as a starter, duran makes sense as a player to bring on when already ahead and lop adjust the system
duran will not be starting most games under lop and with his attitude that should disqualify him as a viable target

@@ClaretandBoozeyep, good player Fulkrug but we’ve not learnt our lesson on bringing lads in to lead the line with a lack of pace. An anti-climatic signing for me. Also a shame for messing the young lad about as he’s a top talent clearly already in need of a bit of an arm around the shoulder.
30 Million Euros not pounds which equates 25 million GBP's still 20+ plus million cheaper and has scored more goals than Duran and he is a established German International with European & CL experience.

I think something important to remember is he's right footed and can play left wing. I know we just signed summerville but he's the only player we have with that profile and Lopetegui has always played inside forwards. I think once Guido, Bissaka and Fullkrug are signed our focus will go back to duran. Like you said, he's untenable at villa and although they probably won't want to stomach it, when it gets closer to deadline day they are going to have a decision to make and no one else is in for him. Tottenham need a home-grown striker to hit their quota and are really the only other prem team that he would suit.
Also we don’t need a ST to run the channels Summerville, Bowen and kudus will do that and then you throw the in the wing backs so we actually do need a striker exactly like fullkrug

Nick I know the German league as a whole is not as good as ours but they do have 3 teams that would be in top 6 prem league… I know you mentioned sancho but he was outstanding in the champions league against huge opposition I don’t think he was happy at utd which is why he didn’t perform but let’s be honest a lot of very gd players go there and fail … nobody knows how any player will cope in the prem until they get here mental strength is important as well as ability and I really do think fullkrug has both
Fullkrug is a good striker. He will bring the other quicker players into it. He knows where the goal is aswell good finisher. He is proven get 3 good years out of him and its money well spent. I don't want Duran attitude problem and would want out after a year or 2 .
This makes perfect sense to me on the Duran saga he would not have made the hammer sign had he not been encouraged to do so and confident that West Ham were going to sign him.
The gap is bridgeable to get Duran and as we still have players we should be seĺling, funding shouldn't be too difficult

Point taken Nick that many strikers who come from the Bundesliga don't cut it in the EPL. However I will never forget Demba Ba and the impact he had for us. It's possible that Loppy is happy with the FulKrug deal in a system that he has planned for us over the next two years. And it's the two years Loppy needs to cover his term of employment so maybe he's behind this as much as Timbo's ego 🎉 just a thought 💭 following on, having upset Duran, Villa have a problem and it's possible he's been asked to sit tight and guaranteed a place in the club either Jan window or on a free next summer. All speculation on my part but such is brinkmanship and Villa may either buckle or sell the player elsewhere

True, Fullkrug could do well. But nobody would be surprised if he flopped. Most forwards from the German league fail in the PL. You have to go back to Klinsmann to find the last top German striker hit it off in the PL.

I totally agree with Druran as our striker no one target. Too many other people involved in this saga hence why it is taking so long to sort out.

It's not impossible for Fullkrug to be an effective striker, but I'm afraid he might suffer Yarmolenko's fate. The worst case scenario would be seeing Antonio as our main number nine again due to Fullkrug's inability to bed in.

Regarding your point about Fullkrug and Bundesliga players, the bundesliga is mainly made up of german players, most of which are defenders. Stereotypically they are slow and unagile but physically imposing. Players like haverts, werner and sancho thrived there because they were so agile and quick that defenders couldnt cope with them but got found out in the premier league where teams are comprised of the most athletic players and high quality players in the world. Fullkrug is a little different in the sense that he's consistently been in top scorer contention without pace. He is a much better dribbler than people think but he's scored goals by out shithousing a league filled with shithouse defenders. Fullkrug is miles better than weghorst in many facets of his game and they're not really comparable if you've watched the two. When you bare this is mind when understanding that Lopetegui system relies on getting the ball up the pitch and controlling it in between the lines, giving crosses or passing into someone to hold the ball up and lay it off to someone who can break through the lines, I think he will work very well for us, but only if the team can learn the philosophy and feed him. In regards to Haller, I never understood why we got rid of him. He had a lot of injuries that year but still looked decent when he played and has gone on to play well ever since despite battling cancer.
Not convinced with Duran. Potential, but attitude and expensive. Fullkrug is proven and has excellent link play. Reminds me of Sheringham. ⚒️
Fulkrug is the right guy. He will get the best out of Kudus and Bowen. If we get Summerville as well

I’m with you Nick in that I’d prefer Duran, but even at 32.5 sterling we’re having our pants pulled down. Yet alone 35 sterling. 25 euros for Fulkrug for 2-3 years if he can do a job. Doesn’t have to get 20 goals a season, as he is pretty good with assists and we’ve plenty of outlets for scoring goals elsewhere on the pitch. Gives us a couple of years to find another striker or develop our own in house. For his age he’s still got some pace as long as he hasn’t got to run 30 yards, is excellent in the air and has some great foot skills. One of those players who can back heel the ball whilst going to ground and flick it straight n the path of a Bowen or kadus. I’ll be happy with either, just don’t like having my ps pulled down. Manure are going to try that with Odi wan kanobi. Can see us picking up part of his loyalty payment….🤷♂️

Why would Sullivan place a 32m cap on what we could spend on Duran, but then agree to spending 26m on Fullkrug? Does not make sense. No offence Nick, but I think your HP has been on the sauce.
IMO we are just budgeting for each position and are being wise with our money. The fact that we bid for 30m for Fofana, but then went for Rodriguez on a free once we learnt his deal to Barcelona fell through kind of proves we are being more careful. I reckon we may actually want Fullkrug AND Duran and the extra money saved on Fofana will help us to get Duran and a CB over the line.

@@ClaretandBooze Called rotation. We simply cannot rely on one striker all season like we did with Antonio. Moreover, Lopetegui strikes as me as being more tactically flexible and is more likely to play two up top rather. I can see both getting lots of game time

Disappointing. Only thing I can see in Fullkrug's favour is his style is likely more in tune with Lopetegui's slower build up and balls in from wide areas. Duran has the ceiling and potential, but is the guy you want on the counter attack with space in behind. Not sure a guy like that fits what we'll be trying to do...ironically would have been ideal for Moyes...running the channels with pace and power. Whichever happens it is what it is and is a big upgrade on where we are at CF today. COYI

Everyone wants Duran. Duran, Bowen, Summerville, Kudus is a champions league front 4 with the oldest player being mid 20's. Its the direction we should have gone in the year Moyes got heavily backed.
Fullkrug is a cult favourite in the making. He has 13 in 21 for the German national side, never mind the 45 in 90 he got for Werder Bremen. Has the look of a horrible bastard that defenders will hate, will get as many assists as goals, and will run through brick walls. Nationality is irrelevant, the type of player is all that counts. Havertz, Werner, Fullkrug, and Haller are all completely different types of player. Haller didn’t bed in and was bombed out by Moyes. Arsenal fans now big up Havertz massively, while Werner was a flash in the pan who was only good at Leipzig.
Duran would be a more exciting signing but he is unproven and rumours are he is a bit of a bad egg in the dressing room. McGinn is on record saying he is difficult to work with. Therefore the.fee of £35M does seem too much.
Sayung that I think Dortmund have done very well to get a deal worth 30M euros for a 31 year old. Its also an expensive deal when you factor in the very good points Nick raised
The caveat to this is apparently J-Lo is fully behind the Fullkrug signing and therefore must have a plan for him. He could get yhe best out of our other talented forwards. If he does the money we have paid might seem decent business.

duran: off the shoulder, counter attacking, exploits unsettled defences. alternatives: antonio, bowen, kudus, summerville, guilherme, cornet
antonio: hybrid, can play both roles to a decent standard
lop: plays possession football, patient buildup, generally doesn't start with a counter attacking style, 90% of the time will start fullkrug
durans makes very little sense, when you consider his attitude when not starting he makes zero sense

Please Mr. Sullivan, if the German rocks up in London, offer him a grand a week, pay for his flight home, then pick up the phone and get Duran done. And Summerviile. And the Argentinan. And AWB. Leave Lopo with the group and the rest of the window, Tim can go out and source a cheap right sided CB and make sure the youth players are in the best position possible. Whether thats squad involvement or well thought out loan moves. Once you get that group together, Lopo can start assessing (and dictating) who the spare parts are and you can get some sales towards the end of the window. The writing is on the wall for tonnes of them already imo. Ings, Cornet, Zouma.. JWP could well be creeping into that bracket aswell
