Moving a 1200lb Planer With No Forklift!

- Last month I found an awesome deal on a used 20" Delta RC51 Planer on LetGo ( similar to craigslist). Louis and I took a little road trip to New Jersey, and pickup up this monster of a machine, loading and unloading it with nothing more than straps and pulleys.
A lot of people request some more footage of my day to day life in the shop, and pickup up used machinery is something I do almost weekly. I really enjoy finding deals on machinery, meeting new people, and figuring out how to move the stuff without any heavy equipment like forklifts or cranes.
This planer is a Delta RC51, 4 blade 20" planer, build in 1984.

Awesome deal but you still took the gamble of buying a thousand pounds of scrap so I’m glad to see your gamble paid off handsomely.
You said you took some risks.....I think the biggest risk was sticking your face in front of the feed shute the first time you started it.
I’m no safety nanny but Jesus you have bigger balls than me, I would have a least been on the other side of the room for the first start up.
Well done on getting it moved. Looks easy using ramps but I have moved things myself that way and it’s not as easy as it looks. There is always the risks of it getting away on you or falling over or one of the ramps or straps snapping or a hundred other things going wrong.

New here and binged watched all your videos 2 weeks ago. Love this type of video. Very interesting.on many levels. The machines themselves are incredible, where you get them from, and loading and unloading them is actually helpful. Also love seeing the drive through the city, and wish there was more of that. Other interests in your videos: the work/projects you do for clients, fixing/maintaining your machinery and correcting errors in the make process. I'm a grandma maker in KC MO, just fyi. It’s a really nice machine!! I was looking into a helix cutter head for it but damn they are expensive!! Straight blades so a fantastic job tho!
I wouldn't even dream of firing up a machine like this and stand next to it before checking each and every bolt and nut ... especially that high speed rotating blade .
Yeah... in hindsight... not my brightest move.
I was so sure it was going to end in tears when you lowered it down the ramp at your shop. 900lb sounded like more than that timber ramp could support, and while we could see that you had that RSJ under the ramp, I was worried it would slip off the back of the truck and drop the thicknesser onto the ground. I found your video because I have an 180kg (400lb) thicknesser/planer coming. The freight company truck has a lift on the back, but I need to get the machine off the pallet, and lift it again when I've made a mobile base for it. I have seen a trick where a couple of 4x2s are placed through the thicknesser and the table raised enough to clamp then, and the 4x2s are used as lifting aids. That's putting a lot of load on the cutting head though. The problem with that is once you get a bunch of mates round you lose control of the situation. I live in New Zealand where we have a 'She'll be right' attitude, and I don't want to break a brand new machine.
I take it that the table on your thicknesser is polished and waxed now?
Scaffold on two sides. Add beam above and lift with pulley or use car hoist and lift. Done with General 24" planer that is heavier than Delta.

I definitely had my concerns! Especially knowing that I had to load and unload this thing before even knowing if it would power up! Now that its running I am SO glad i took the risk! Ive seen the same machine selling for 6X what I paid for it online since this!
I know exactly what you mean. I’ve taken the same risk quite a few times. Even with tools I’ve bought knowing they were broken and luckily I’ve been able to fix and use or resale them 90% of the time. I got my old 1970s craftsman table saw for $15 because it “didn’t run.” Come to find out the motor was packed full of mud wasp nests. Has been running like a champ ever since I cleaned her up

i realy recoment that you wax that bottom table on the planer. makes the wood slide realy easy and nice.

Hello, we own this exact model, purchased used. It came with a user manual. We decided to sharpen the blades, but the user manual indicates there is a Knife gauge (Part 105) and a gauge block (Part 110) that was supposed to be included brand new, which we don't have since the unit was purchased used. It is really hard to find replacement gauges that originally shipped with these planers, so is it possible you could share what you are doing for knife gauge depth?

What was the box on the roof in the guys factory i couldnt understand what you said??
He had a single cab manned gantry crane. Basically a person would sit in that little box and drive the crane back and forth along the rails all day lifting items and moving them. A really beautiful piece of antique machinery!

Probably shouldn’t squat with your face in front of a 5hp planer that you never started before and then turn it on. You never know if everything on the cutterhead is secure or not.

why are you not wearing ear protecters?? Been woodworking for fifty years , using protecters for most of those and still suffer with terrible tinitus. Wood machinery the worst.you are young , wear them.
paul wellard I actually wear noose canceling headphones that provide sufficient hearing protection all the time. They are hard to notice in this video but I have hearing loss and tinitus so I’m vigilant with wearing them.
