Nice work Tommy, a very clean C64 and case, looks beautiful, and also a very nice view from your office, very very cool!! Greetings from Germany.. Michael.
Great video, thanks a lot for sharing! Superb result (btw lovely background music) It's great your daughter is helping her dad with PCBway advert :) My daughter doesn't understand my love to old computers (but she respects that though): for her this is just a very odd hobby of mine (especially considering the fact that I had never had neither of these machines when I was a kid as we didn't have access to them in soviet union)
Thanks so much! 😊 Same with my two youths. They are only interested in new tech like PC, iPads and the xbox :) But she thought it was fun to make the ad :)
Another Great Cleaning Job Its still Fantastic, wo watch you doing this I love to watch very Dirty Breadbins to clean them up that they look Nice Go Ahead with this and save this Great Computer for the next 40 Years ^^
I wash the boards with soapy lukewarm water and a paint brush and rinse in cold water. To dry I heat up the oven to 80 degrees turn it off and put the board in for 2 hours.
There is a simple way to fix the bluriness of the video with the type of RF modulator you have in your board. Watch Adrian Blacks video called "Improve your C64's video output with this simple fix". Around timestamp 30:50 you can see he cuts a capacitor in the modulator and the video improvement is drastic. I do that on all my C64 with that type of RF modulator.
What's happening with the springs is called "bluing", IIRC. There are a bunch of ways of doing it, but yeah, it's all about creating a protective oxide layer, and in the case of steel, that'd be a layer of magnetite. That's the extent of my knowledge in the subject though!
Nice :D i think i need to chekk my c128 powerbrick before i try it and also clean it, best is to replace right? or can a psu be used for easy&quick fix :D
Great video! This particular C64 (along with som other retro tech) is actually featured in a Norwegian short film called Blikkboks: ruclips.net/video/PIks8KegWgM/видео.html.
to give keyboard maintenance is not necessary to rip off keys, that action can easily break keys... I don't recommend it at all, excellent results can be obtained with just a brush and alcohol, and disassembling the keyboard contact PCB board remove all the tiny screws and clean each conductive rubber key contact and metal pads at the pcb board. once again Don't Remove the key caps!!!
Nice Restoration!!
Another C64 is Ready for the Future! You keep them Alive👍🏻
That's the plan! Thanks!
thanks Tommy, great to watch, all done with so much love and respect for the old diva 64!
Thank you :)
You'd have to measure the capacitors' ESR too for a full diagnosis, but after 40 years replacement is the safe option.
Yes, I should. Don't think that tester I have is good at that

Jam in all new ceramics. New one are much smaller and lower profile. Also replace the 2 orange audio caps with new TDK film caps. .22uF 100V 20%.
Another Great Cleaning Job

You got that right!
beautiful job tommy!! this c 64 has been brought to fruition!!
Many thanks!
When old 74xx regulators fail they may actually output the full voltage and fry all chips. But as you say they usually last long.
I might replace them next time then :)

That's a great idea!
I also have the c64 bug, I accidentally bid and won my 5th one yesterday on eBay…… I wasn’t even looking for one 😂

Thanks for the insight!

There is a lot of modern ones you can buy relatively cheap.
@@Arcticretro ahok Nice, thank you :D
Oh yeah, dood.
Any news on your new build C-64? I loved that project series.
It's complete now. However, I plan to build another one from another new replica board that is not finished yet.
C64 repair video? Insta like! :-)
Hope you enjoyed it!
Your printer can't print ABS so it can be the same plastic as the C64 which would allow the solvent glue welding?
I think it can but I only got PLA plastic
I laughed at your comment about when the sun comes back but forgot your geographic location.
No sun now. Only a little daylight for like 3 hours pr day
So 21h are for retro works. ;)
@@congestiontv And sleep :)
@@Arcticretro ...and an extra hour for lunch break. ;)
Don't you hate it when you buy a c64 and it's working 😂 .

Ok, thanks. I have never broken or damaged a key using my method :)
