I hereby declare you not a tech hobbyist, but a god damn Commodore Surgeon. That poor thing was a straight up bio hazard on par with Chernobyl or 3 Mile Island... You're a brave man indeed...
As an electronic engineering technician I would have looked twice before attempting this at all, but that is why you have this lovely channel and not all of us ... clever ! must remember this :D
This....warms my heart. It really does. I have so many happy memories with the C64 so seeing one that has been treated so badly be restored is a wonderful thing. Thank you Peri! You and the whole fractic family. Fractimily? Fractily? Framily? Hmm, yeah, Framily.
Well, retro recipes actually has a incentive to buy a trashed commodore over a mint commodore. He can make content with that. might be why the price was steeper.
Looks like this machine was stored in a damp basement, or a basement that had flooded a few times ( my C64c has rust as well but no where near this level, and it still works, those cobwebs look like mold to me
I really, really love your channel. Your calm and soothing voice, the way you present stuff, the humour, the professional editing - and Retro stuff! Pure gold! Please keep doing what you're doing (have been binge watching your videos in this quarantine even more).
Thank you for your video. It's been quite a trip down memory lane. I am a retired school board technician who has repaired thousands of commodore products. Our school board spent millions of dollars purchasing c64s peripherals every year and their failure rates were very high. I remember I had a coffee can full of defective ICs that weighed about 5 lbs. I can hear the diagnostic sound wave in my head to this day. Thank you again for the nostalgia. I'm happily retired now and never touching a computer again. 😉 Lol. Fantastic videos.
I'm amazed!!!!! This actually brought a tear to my eyes. Thank you!!!! I love my C64, 1541 drives & 1702 monitor that I got for Xmas 1983 when I was 15 (monitor in 1984 upgrading from a 12 inch B&W TV). I still use them all the time (well not the two 1541so much since getting a Ultimate - II+). Now starting week 4 of Ohio's stay at home order and have been very stressed, but your video just took me away from that for a bit and has made me feel good. Great Job and thank you again!!!
When I found out that you make your own music for this, I was even more impressed with the production on this channel. Absolutely fantastic work and great content to boot!
Just watched to the end... an excellent job there on putting that back in working order... the length of the video really doesn't convey how much time that must have taken!
Stunning job. A C64 (C I think) was the first computer my parents bought us back in the 80's, followed not too long after by an A500, and then an Amiga each for my 2 brothers and then me (an A1200 - which I still have to this day - although its not currently working). Love the channel.
Probably time to courier another rasp Pi and random case to 4 or 5 you tubers again to improve each time Maybe a Retro Recipes custom designed 3D printed case. Something funky like...opening a cookbook...opening the book cover reveals the keyboard.
Turning a hunk of junk into a beautiful representation of days gone by. Your passion and attention to detail are astounding. Keep up the good work we old heads appreciate everything you and the rest of our retro community do.
great job sir! It truly is amazing how it is even possible, it just goes to show how much care and love you put into it!! it beings a tear to the eyes of this old guy who grew up with a 64c
Hey Peri... Another awesome video. I would of loved to have seen more of the actual work being performed but still was great to see how it turned out in the end.. thanks for posting.
I think Pete is in the UK and Chris in the US. Pete takes pictures of his work, sends the pics to Chris and Chris uses them for making cool videos like this.
Long time/first time. Being stuck at home 24/7, seeing a video like this pop up is sheer joy to make this stressful time more bearable. The classic breadbin C64 was my first computer, and still my favorite (you never forget your first love...). Seeing you and others like 8Bit Guy restoring and caring for these, it really brings me back to my early teen years spending hours typing in hex programs from Compute's Gazette, coding in machine language, or just playing millions of games. You and the whole 'Fractic family are some much fun, keep it up!
Amazing job. Very inspiring. I suppose the relatively simple nature of these machines is part of what makes it possible for them to survive such terrible treatment, but it's incredible nonetheless.
Great job on the restoration. Certainly beyond my amount of patience:). This can be dialed a final notch up by doing some electroplating in your garage. Thumbs up.
Amazing job Peri restoring this C64 to full health again. I was honestly flabbergasted when I saw you fixing the plastic stress marks with the heat gun. Awesome work and great video!
This was a crazy restore. I know old computer and systems can go through a lot and survive but man that one had gone through a lot more than others. Glad to see you saved it from the dump
Old stuff are amazing. I sent for repairs a Trinitron with a bunch of popped caps, and it was still working with minors hiccups, but my VGA monitor straight up refuses to work if it's not on shape. A simple machine can deal with everything, but only a good hand like you can make them beautiful again while they return to top shape
Very Cool! I also do restoration work of vintage hifi. When I am restoring something I find myself wondering to who it first belong to and that it was someones pride and joy. That C64 was once a kids present and he must had been so happy with it. You did an awesome job!
Absolutely superb job... incredible. I can't believe it. My wife said 'There is no way he is going to get it working.'... Twenty minutes later, the video is over and we are gobsmacked.
I never would've thought something this far gone could be rescued, great work! Though, the eBay price seemed a bit absurd considering how destroyed the machine was, don't you think? Also, Ladyfractics robotic "welcome" was a little terrifying! Tell her not to haunt my nightmares, please!
Haha I'll pass that message along! As for the price, we were looking at the big picture and the thought of saving this. Plus it was a lot of fun and very rewarding. Not to mention that small price to provide a lot of happiness for this great community. 😊
Absolutely fantastic !! You brought the computer back to life !! I always follow your videos, very inspiring. I also like old computers and video games. Greetings from Brazil. :)
When unscrewing old rusty screws, try this trick: Use something to hammer the end of the screwdriver when turning. And if it doesn't turn and you are starting to destroying the head of the screw, try tightening it just a bit. This can loosen rust that is lodged between the threads, which causes friction.
Never thought I’d see a computer worse than the 8-bit guy’s Vic-20 but here we are... now time to see this restored! Just finished watching. Incredible.
I have to admit, I'm impressed. The outside looks absolutely beautiful... okay, compared to the way it looked when it arrived, the entire thing is beautiful. I'm rather surprised that the only thing that had to be replaced (not counting the capacitors, keyboard springs, screws, and screw mounts) was the RF modulator and the PLA.
@@retrohaxblog Oh? I don't recall that being mentioned, but at one point I was distracted by my cat, who insisted on bellyrubs, so I probably didn't hear it because my attention was divided. It isn't really surprising, though, considering its original state.
WOW I thought the Atari 800 restoration was the absolute worst 8 Bit computer restoration ever! I really live for these types of restoration video's, learned alot, will be saving this video and watching again, I love being a patreon of this channel. Please keep the restoration vids coming.
Loved watching this. Only thing missing was running some test-games after the refurb and especially hearing that sid chip chirp. Unless all IC's had to be discarded of course. :)
Yeah, I don't think we even saw the cursor flash. I was hoping for a game to be shown with sound, but regardless, it was an excellent job they did on it.
I hereby declare you not a tech hobbyist, but a god damn Commodore Surgeon. That poor thing was a straight up bio hazard on par with Chernobyl or 3 Mile Island...
You're a brave man indeed...
Nice work, Drygol!
@Dr ROLFCOPTER! He is a voice actor. Look up Christian Simpson. :)
As an electronic engineering technician I would have looked twice before attempting this at all, but that is why you have this lovely channel and not all of us ... clever ! must remember this :D
This is just incredibly satisfying to watch 😌 What an amazing job, saving this poor C64. Seeing it completely restored in the end is just.. relaxing.
LadyRecovered's 'Welcome' was kind of freaky and it's not even Halloween👻
She's a little bit too good at playing an android.
Yea, I loved it! (Except the blinking, I think it's more android like to not blink at all ;)
It sure spooked meeee
This....warms my heart. It really does. I have so many happy memories with the C64 so seeing one that has been treated so badly be restored is a wonderful thing. Thank you Peri! You and the whole fractic family. Fractimily? Fractily? Framily? Hmm, yeah, Framily.
I thought the fleabay-price was rather steep, considering the condition. Impressive refurb!
Thank you sir :)
It WAS an auction after all. People bid it up to such a steep price.
Well, retro recipes actually has a incentive to buy a trashed commodore over a mint commodore. He can make content with that. might be why the price was steeper.
17:15 makes me so happy to see. I come back to this video often to enjoy this work of art restoration,
I'm back! XD
Man, Perifractic is out here living his best life. Good for him.
I felt a lump in my throat when you showed off the state it was in and nearly in tears when you brought it back from the brink. Great video!
Thanks :) More details on my retrohax.net blog
Looks like this machine was stored in a damp basement, or a basement that had flooded a few times ( my C64c has rust as well but no where near this level, and it still works, those cobwebs look like mold to me
Pretty sure that was a species of mould/fungus. Very cool either way
Michael O Callaghan not even funny. Just no. Go back under your rock and never come back

This video is pure joy! I just feel happiness after seeing it fully restored. Congrats for an awesome job!

I am blown away. I really feared you'd get halfway through the board and find it was beyond hope! Well done.
Thanks :) Naaah, nothing is unrefurbishable lol :D
Fantastic job! One more old soldier to keep marching on. I bet if Jack T. were still alive, he'd be proud of that C= 64 refurb.
The white fibers are hyphae. They're sort of like the root system of fungi.
i was wondering, thanks.
Hyphae, have not heard that word in years!
if i had to guess even deeper into it - perhaps it is the asexual form (anamorph) of an ascomycota member
Nice👌👌👌
Sounds like it was outdoors for a long period of time, so exposed to water - but not on the ground where water could pool.
I'm amazed!!!!! This actually brought a tear to my eyes. Thank you!!!! I think I'm going to play your theme song whenever I fix an old computer.
Do it.
I am still concerned there was no flashing cursor, but omfg, fact it even shows anything is amazing.
That was a photo :-)

Another one saved from the landfill! Love the trick with the graphite from a pencil as I have had to do that a few times. Cheers on a Great Refurb!

Superb excellent fantastique! The poor lil computer looked like it went through the trash compactor and was buried in a landfill before you saved it.
It's amazing to the mushroom mycelium (the white web/tendril looking stuff) growing on the PCB. It almost looks like it's following the traces.
Finally we have a name for that stuff!

The Bob Ross of Commodore 64s
It's just a happy little accident 🎨🕹️
Nice work! I have a C64c waiting at the post office, but in way better shape than that. Will have a recap and clean up anyway.
After all that poor C64 has been through, I’m amazed it still worked in the end! Nice job!
Thank you :)
Amazing job, my dude. Really a truly amazing job!
Absolute superb restoration. I like the bent wire idea to replace those pesky broken clips, may have to try that on my C64
Thanks, however, next time I will 3D print proper replacement brackets :D
Lovely to see a neglected 8bit restored to it's former glory where most people might of thought it was beyond saving. The end result looks fantastic.
I never would've thought something this far gone could be rescued, great work! Though, the eBay price seemed a bit absurd considering how destroyed the machine was, don't you think?

Absolutely Amazing, You have earned your Commodore P.H.D. with this thesis
Lol! Thank you :D

Use something to hammer the end of the screwdriver when turning. And if it doesn't turn and you are starting to destroying the head of the screw, try tightening it just a bit. This can loosen rust that is lodged between the threads, which causes friction.
Probably not a good idea to take a hammer to something that is this fragile though... But good tip otherwise.

Thx :)
You can coat the metal shrouds with flux and run solder on them. They will look much better
Essentially its like car bodywork (retinning)
