How are you supposed judge something where the field for the competition is constantly in flux? How can you have a comparison between two different athletes if the size of the wave is a factor for the ability for that person to gain a good score?
They get like 40m and only their top 2 waves are judged. If you're a world class surfer, you should be able to find something to work with in that time
I've done surfing a bit but I just thought riding the wave was the goal. The tricks these guys are pulling off are insane.

The bracket system is as contemporaneous as possible.

Surfing's fun to do and fun to watch. But judging surfing (scoring it) is silly nonsense. Get over yourselves.
That is true if you know nothing about the sport. Criteria works very well for determining the best surfer

Surfing has horrible judges very inconsistent. Just look at how much spray the surfer throws off the wave and how high high they get above the lip.
