** ABOUT TIME TEAM **
Time Team is a British archaeology series that originally broadcast on the UK's Channel 4 for 20 series, and countless specials. Over the years, the team excavated over 220 sites, from back gardens to Buckingham Palace. The show has now returned to RUclips, thanks to the incredible support of thousands of worldwide fans on Patreon.
Series 21 (Season 21) of Time Team follows two incredible new digs, each released in extended 3-part episodes exclusively on the Time Team Official RUclips channel. The first dig explores a mysterious Iron Age site in Cornwall; the second investigates a huge Roman villa on the estate of a Tudor castle in Oxfordshire.

Hi! I emailed a query to the shop on January 16. Have not received a reply till now. Reminder mailed a moment ago.
@@arunigma Hi, apologies for the delay - we'll take a look into this and get back to you asap. Thanks
Why does the presenter speak in such dulcet tones? Speak up mate, show enthusiasm! Narrator is annoying.
As soon as I hear the music for Time team . I feel like I need a cup of cocoa, a biscuit and snuggly blanket .It just feels right!
Well done Gus! Not easy being the new guy front & centre in an institution.
Xongrats on your profwwsoeship Carenza.
Each time I watch this, the shot of tiny Naomi schlepping those enormous containers grows ever more poignant for some reason.
I love how slower paced this version is vs how rushed and chaotic it felt as time went on with the original series. You get more of a conversational feel here and I appreciate that. I also appreciate Natalie’s increased screen time in this dig. She was barely seen/heard in the first dig.
Agreed. The new format with 30 minutes devoted to each day does bring a more relaxed and thorough episode.
Tony pretending to freak out that they wouldn't find anything got old after a while.
And yet, Tony's voice overs didn't make one lapse into a comatose state.
@@patricktracy1966 like the "fans" moaning about Tony not being here...
Tony used to ask some good questions but I felt he was very disrespectful to John quite often. Even towards Stewartand Mick. I like Gus is calm and professional very nice,!
It is interesting to see how the technology has advanced from Season One of TT until now. I also like how the 3-day dig is being presented in three shows, giving the viewers much more detail about the excavations and what is being found.
This amount of detail was probably recorded in the original programs and then edited down to make a single episode, must be so much unseen footage.
Yeah, I was comparing everyone gathered around that enormous monitor with S1E1 huddle over the dot-matrix printer…☺️
I just rewatched the first twelve seasons and the technological changes were amazing within those episodes. Now it feels like centuries of advancement have occurred.
Nice to see Matt step into the Phil role as the experienced field archaeologist.
Matt needs to protect his knees. Poor Phil wore his joints out. Bless him.
@@iriswaterford8881 Sure miss him and his silly shorts. Quite a character.
@@shariwelch8760 Don't forget his toolbox and trusty trowel. 🙂.

Thank you to all those Patreon supporters, and long time Time Team lovers, for bringing this series back to the audience that loves this show! 🍻
Gus you are already a Gem! Love you’re presenting style, enthusiasm, relaxing and passionate!
R.I.P: Mick Aston, Robin Bush and Victor Ambrose
All true! And yes, Gus is almost like David Attenborough'ish in his way of talking. Almost - dare I say - ASMR'ish? XD

Plus Bridgit & Raysan
Fantastic as always! As a retired archaeologist I must give credit to the bulldozer operators. They are unbelievably excellent in their delicate touch!!
Bachoe
Should research sites be bulldozed?
I really loved that ending, where Natalie used Gus and Jimmy to give a sense of the villa's scale. Looking at maps, aerial photos, none of those really give the viewer a true sense of size like what Natalie did there. Having people at the ends really helps viewers see just how big the villa is. The slower pace, more of the process, deeper explanations, the new format is exceeding all expectations. Loving it, just loving it.
The big shoes left behind by Mick, Tony and Phil are being filled . The new series are great. Please keep going
I don't think those shoes are being filled. I have the sense that they have brought their own shoes and are filling those very well.
HELL NO
agree with the others here... this is a new set of shoes, and the old ones can never be filled
no chance Gus is gormless and about exciting as your comment
Superb. The new TT has found its footing. So much looking forward to Dig 2 Part 3 and more digs in future. Happy - delighted - to be a Patreon supporter.
I've missed seeing Stewart wandering about on his bicycle, listening to what the land has to say. Also great to see that the team has embraced the metal detectorists as an asset vs the equivalent of "tomb robbers" or vandals.
To be fair there are both - responsible detectorists and stealth pirates (as well as responsible archaeologists and stealth pirates) . But even Mick came around to seeing the value in metal detecting as long as it is done responsibly. Both archaeologists and detectorists have changed over the decades to come to an understanding. The laws also changed over time to not cut the detectorists totally out when they find a hoard making responsible metal detecting and documentation a worthy goal. I think that there was a time - just when detecting got big - where it was the wild west out there and every man for himself. That brought on some of the bad feelings. Remember, there was a time when archaeology was similar. Both professions have grown dramatically and for the better.
@@SirWussiePants I can appreciate that. It's just enjoyable to see it being fully integrated into the Time Team toolkit at last.
@@Oleandra-13 What do mean, "at last"?? They were using it, as Larry says, when Mick was alive still many years ago.
@@jodyknight Sorry, typo. Was meant to say "at least".
@@Oleandra-13 ah that explains it.
I have seen every episode of every season, multiple times in fact and was thrilled to hear Time Team was coming back. Felt I had to do my part and lend support to make it happen. Thank you all for not disappointing! Can’t wait for more.
I miss Tony, but the new presenter is just wonderful also. He could do meditation recordings with that gorgeous voice! I'm loving these new episodes!!
@@thescarletgraywitch8052 Yes I agree Gus is doing a good job. 🙂.
I think that Mick is smiling in the Great Archeological Dig in the Sky (apologies to Pink Floyd). At first I wasn’t sure if I’d like a TT reboot, but I’m loving it. Phil and Tony are missed.
Wow!! I am sitting here watching Time Team and I have stepped back in time to when I used to watch Time Team. It feels right, it feels good. And the new technology gives us so much more evidence, less of history can be hidden. Well done all, a wonderful Dig so far. 👍😉
Love the new episodes. Thank you for making them! 1 suggestion: Use more of the field recordings/audio for Gus. The pacing, sotto voce, and microphone of the studio narration lulls me to sleep and disrupts the energy of the episode. His audio recorded in the field is much more engaging.
omg watching that Lord seeing his castle from a bird's view, he looked like he was weeping seeing everything like that. i cant imagine the emotion and elation he was going through at that moment. those 3d scans were seriously stunning!
He seems like a really nice man - although I hope he appreciates that inheriting a castle might cast an air of privilege upon his person ;)
I have no doubts that If i would have had Time Team as a child i would be an archaeologist today
Born and bred in a Roman "chester" town and having been a member of the archeology club in school, the addition of Time Team would have definitely had me studying the subject but due to the orchestrate curriculum of a "brick in the wall" society, I went into engineering. For my autistic psyche, that I have now discovered 50 years on, I followed the wrong course in life.
I had Indiana Jones as a teen and still didn't end up as an archaeologist.
@@crashbox7130 Time Team is a long way from Indiana Jones. Not the same thing at all.
@@AllynHin Yes I know that. The comment wasn't serious, it's just a little joke. I've been watching Time Team since it started way back in 1994.
I came close. I do musical archaeology as a musicologist. Not as much dirt, but a more solitary "dig"
So amazing to watch this history being discovered & explained. Loving Time Team!! 👍👍👍👍❤️
People. This is really coming along well. Certainly much to be proud of. Everything is nicely executed.
This pleasant 2.0 goes to show, that the unique format of crowdfunding was the right decision. Nothing could've been more frightening, than todays editing, half second clipping and way over the top dramatized epic soundtrack that so much else is so profoundly and truly plagued of, making such broadcasts completely and utterly intolerable, unbearable and unwatchable.
This, my friends.....this is hopefully a new decade long pathway.
So much to be explored still. Standing ovation.
As much as I miss Tony and his energy, I am getting very used to Gus' ASMR voice and his dulcet tones.
Been watching Time Team since year dot and as much as I miss Tony and Phil and of course Mick. I am so happy its back. Thanks guys
You've done a great job of reincarnating the best format of TT, the cast are all spot on, it couldn't be better, and my favorite Stu is there, well done and thankyou, if you do another Roman show how about Vindomora ?
Hi Time Team. Judging from the number of places mentioned in the chat, it looks like you have enough popularity to do this more often!!! Just sayin'!
You could even bring in a narrator who played a comedy character thru different eras in time, if you liked?
@@sirloin8745 Even though I love Sir Tony passionately, I am happy with the chosen narrator/presenter they're already using, his speaking voice is very nice to listen to and he's a very good looking man to boot!!

@@jodyknight Well thanks, you have just given me free reign(?) to say how good it is to see the gorgeous S Lipscombe again, and the, truly stunning Heidi.
@@Mark-xx8go I know it can be a bit of a mine field now commenting on people's looks, but I think it's OK when you're not being too specific about it and you're being considerate and not overly sexualising of the person. I'd never noticed how elegantly tall Suzanna Lipscombe is before, but I did in this video; she is a lovely woman. I will have to look for Heidi now, what does she do on the team?
When the English civil was was looming in the 1630s, my 9x GGF went to New Jersey to buy land. His son stayed in Buckinghamshire and was too young to fight. He was my 8x GGF.
At first I thought time team without Tony would not be great.I was wrong.this is great the spirit of time team lives on.
the updated and more modern tech that John now has and the drone to help in landscape with Stewart is such a plus to this dig. Very interesting to see Matt finding walls in his trench, and to see what new find Naomi has been able to find is also amazing and give you a much wider range in what those people that lived there, thousands of years ago were eating and how they lived, and to better understand their lives.
I really like this new format of 30 minutes per day. So much content! Another excellent episode here, I'm excited to see what happens tomorrow.
Have been watching TT since the start. Very happy to see it coming back with a few of the old guard still in tow. Always loved Stuart (he’s normally correct), Helen ( such a great woman knowledgeable and seems so kind) and finally John (grumpy in the beginning especially with Phill). Missing Phil ( he was a card lol ) and finally Mick Aston ( I cat say enough about how much I enjoyed his style and personality. I wish I got to meet him. The whole cast has a good place in my heart. Matt, Francis Mick the dig.p, Bridget (had a soft spot For her, still have a little lol). Thank you all so much and for doing it all again. X
I'm at the start of renovating a 400+ year old house. I can't be more specific of the age, as there are just no records. One feature suggests the house is much older.
Already, and thanks to the knowledge I've gained from watching Time Team since it's very first episode on C4. I been able to see the history of the house from things like the filled in doorways that now lead outside what I own.
I really wish I could get that photogrammetry and laser measurement done, to begin to see what has been lost. But here in Malta, right now that is beyond specialist and expensive.
But I just wanted to say, thank you to the Time Team, for making me aware of what to look for. I'm so glad you are back!
I had a house built in 1921. Before I bought it it had been remodeled and I remodeled again. So in only just 101 years, a small semi built as one of a small estate of rented properties has had 2 remodelings and now maybe more as I sold it last year. So no wonder a house the size and age of this one is so intriguing.
Hi Matt. I am an archaeologist. May I suggest you look into a few local (or internationally well known) Universities to find ones that have a program in Historical, Architectural, or Cultural Heritage that may also have people using the latest laser technology and approach them. There may be a student looking for a PhD subject or location to use as a test site for their research.
@@leithmacdonald4242 brilliant suggestion.
Can I just say that you can do your own Photogrammetry with free software. Various RUclips videos will show you how. It won't be as quick or high quality as the professionals with professional kit but you can do it. (It may cost you a new PC though, one of the reasons I brought my swanky new one was to be able to do Photogrammetry at speed).
e.g. ruclips.net/video/HZPAqL0JJiw/видео.html
Even just manual measurements used to build a 3D model using Blender (Open Source Software) might help you get a more complete picture of the building.
Great to see the show embracing the new technologies (inc photogammetry ) alongside the traditional hands on techniques. It builds a great picture of the past. I feel the show is being developed for it's archaeological interest without the need to follow the traditional television methods. Good work so far. #TimeTeam'sback #Patreon
I love the programme, but it feels it's lacking a bit of humour or the whip cracking of Tony ..lol The narration is more of the David Attenborough thing.
It needs some oomph.
Doesn't get more TT than a Roman villa. Wonderful!
Enjoying this, but I think the bits with Broughton Castle are even more fascinating...imagine geophysing the grounds immeadiatley adjacent to the walls, or dredging and digging the moat...
Yes but this is taking time from the original objective. Best do this as a separate 'dig' or is this part of payment to be allowed to dig?
@@dobwalls I could see it as payment for allowing the dig. Broughton Castle is open to the public and if I were in or visiting England I would put it on my list of places to visit.
I would also love to see a dig at the Castle proper, but I doubt they would let them open that doorway on the stairs.
@@JerryB507 There are mini drones nowadays, and cameras that can fit into a tiny space to find out what's behind the doorway.
@@dobwalls I agree and to such a point I skimmed over the castle part. I would of been happier seeing more of the villa being excavated. 🙂.
07:40 Great interaction and banter with John, Neil and Gus. “Lesson learned…” 😉
It must be difficult for Natalie and Gus, but I loved it and thought they acquitted themselves well.
Absolutely love this show from first season up to now
Me too, and it has taught me so much about our history that I didn't learn at school because we had to choose between history and geography and I chose geography at the time. Time Team has helped me fill in my knowledge gaps so well and I'm so grateful to the whole team for this.
I really like the new presenters. So nice to have time team back
I am really enjoying Natalie. I want to see her do more. She's so smart and so fun and her energy is wonderful.
Agreed. I think her energy is closer to Tony's than Gus's, although I enjoy his presence too.
@@ejrobinson I was JUST thinking that, when I read the original comment!
Natalie really looks lost. The other women are so competent. She just fades into the background.
Loved that bit at the end showing the scale. Looking forward to the final episode!
For me the castle is as interesting as the villa and it would be interesting to know if any technology could be used to find hidden rooms or whatever.
I thought they just did...behind the blocked up door? Or do you mean find out the size of it and actually get into the room somehow? That would be interesting to see what's been blocked up back there. Who knows what horrors or delights could be held within?
@@jodyknight An SDS drill and an endoscope perhaps? It might have been filled up with rubbish but I suppose rubbish is treasure to archaeologists.
@@Phiyedough yes, that would work, and yes, even old rubbish is treasure.
Can't wait till tomorrow. Bravo, Time Team 2022. So far, you've exceeded the heights you reached in the previous 20 seasons. Keep up the good work.
Now THIS is how you do quality production! Thanks.
Fantastic program, congratulations from Quebec, Canada
Glad quality is somewhere these days, Through the old traditional TV I feel like it's lost its way and falling rapidly now. Only so much of Bargain Hunt and This Morning one can stand.
As an Australian with part English heritage, aged in mid 70’s , my school history was based on England , (not usually including Wales, Scotland , Ireland etc. ) with occasional references to some of the other members of the Great Britain, it has fascinated me all my life. I got hooked on Meet your Ancestors , and Time Team with a great desire to join a dig and take part. I loved all the presenters and was excited to see Raksha and Matt on other programmes after TT was no longer being shown. Now to see many of the old faces back I am once more in my happy place. Thank you all who were responsible for getting the new TT back and financing the effort. I am not in a position to help financially and certainly unfit physically but I feel like it I am welcomed back to discovering more about the small island in the north! Some of my forebears came from Bath, others were Manx and my late husband had connections to Scotland and Ireland. So it’s somewhere in the blood! Looking forward to day 3 and all future events. X
Love new hosts , sense of humour and previous hard working team
Hilde's red hair is beautiful.
And Gus is perfect for the job.
Horse's skull. Cries of 'ritual' and "deposited when it went out of use" - I've watched all the T.T.s dozen times over. How about the following? I'll just chuck this one into the pot [..ouch...]. My great grandfather used to be very partial to stewed eels. There was a pit [this is Cheshire - an old marlpit = pond] not far from his house. To feed the eels in the pit, he said, they'd get a horse's head from the knackers yard and chuck it in. Just suppose that Stuart's series of ponds...
The sound department needs to step those voice-overs back about a foot or two. Sounds like he's whispering in my ear, it's creepy. Add some ambiance.
Such a brilliant dig and castle review!! I have absolutely loved watching the first two parts of this and I'm really looking to the next bit. Thank you Thank you Thank you to all of the wonderful Patreon supporters and Time Team for making these new digs happen.
I used to love Tony’s humour and eagerness, running around to each trench and asking tough questions when things weren’t progressing fast enough. Gus is fantastic and different style to Tony.
Loving the new series. Its brilliant! Keep the episodes coming. I love the new presenter duo proper job. One is calm and considered and the other is clever and quirky! I have been watching the programme I was a toddler. It is great to see some older faces still loving their jobs! It takes me back down memory lane but also makes me excited for more! How many more episodes will there be
This has been great so far, but one thing is missing: the day two debrief at the pub!
In this day and age, someone would be complaining about it.
I miss that too, but I think you have to be a Patreon to be a part of that. (Fair enough too, seeing that they are the ones paying for the whole thing!)
Oooh, Roman walls at last, and some bling (coloured tesserae and painted wall plaster)! Also a scary twist to the story of the castle. Everyone’s planning and hard work is beginning to produce results and I am so looking forward to the finale tonight.
I have loved Time Team for decades, and was delighted by itsreturn, but this anodyne commentary, all easy listening and no contradictions turns me off. It sounds like someone trying to sell air freshener, late night on the Discovery Channel. I will continue to donate, but Tim Taylor has got this horribly wrong. Debate and humour made us THINK in the old Time Team, but this archaeological Horlicks will satisfy no one.
I looked forward to these episodes all week.
same, it's such a treat
The only improvement I would ask for (is it too much to beg?) is for the wonderful Dr Gus not to make his voiceovers so soft and with a downturn in tone. Sounds as though he is reading to small children. But...in the field his voice and contribution are excellent. Far more engaging and dynamic.
Gus and Natalie are a great combination. I think a sensible view that you could never replicate Tony but the combination of these two captures a great sense of wonder and fun - they’re also amazingly qualified.
The injection of other new blood is great. This isn’t like watching a retired band get back together for one last tour, this is new blood that will keep this going and going.
Bravo!
Wow, what a great episode! So many fascinating discoveries! I can't wait for Day Three!
I think Gus is the perfect presenter! Really enjoying these new Time Teams…great to have it back!
He is good but Tony will always be best.
I find his presentation a distraction. Breathy, whispering and no depth of voice. Sounds he is reading a book or script to small children and comes off to be underwhelming and overly bland. "Mister Rogers speak" for the American viewers reference. It isn't Adult level.
There is no personality like the archeologist exhibit. Much better in direct conversation mind you, but " chalkboard screechy" when doing overview narration. Monotone and condescending.
Oh I love Natalie!! She's bringing a little of Tony's comedy for me. 💖
Time Team is an amazing project! Thank you all for the continuation!
Oh, wow!! *Two* mysteries to address! I'm really enjoying this. Reviving something iconic rarely works, but the new episodes are living up to the legacy. Keep up the good work!
The technology employed scanning the home, it's stunning. This is going on with such incredible discoveries, like Time Team never left our screans!
After rewatching some older episodes from around 2010 and then rewatching these, I am even more impressed with how you all have truly brought the show into the present. I can see the new folks getting more comfortable, I think I heard Natalie channeling Tony right at the end of this episode. Still would love to Phil pop in and liven things up a bit, but I imagine those discussions occurred and there are reasons he is not here. Love what you all are doing. Can't wait for more. I think I will increase my Patreon level!
Am so glad they backed off on so much animation. It’s very distracting. I’d rather see the real digging of the site.
So nice to see Stewart, John, Carenza and Matt getting stuck in. I had missed their work with Time Team and they helped me through lockdown! Than you all X
Raysan & Brigid win the award for best art on their wall. 26:20 (Somebody has very good taste in that pop art piece).
Watched the first episode of the new season and wow...you've really done the old TT justice, what a wonderful mix of old and new! I've become a patron so you can keep digging, can't wait to see more from the entire team, old and new :D
I didn't realize how much I missed this show. I'm glad my tiny contribution helped and I hope this continues. Gus & Natalie channel Tony so well. Can't wait for tomorrow.

DON'T STEAL MY IDEA!
Time Team is such a show unto itself. The familiar faces makes it like you have come home in the new digs. The new members are meshing in well. The new dome and technology. John's new toys and big screen a huge boost to the digs. The 3d scans are amazing and love the re addition of a historian and shes a looker. This second dig is revealing how well they are settling in. Just a joy to watch Time Team.
Am I the only person who finds Gus' commentary style annoying? For me it's just too whispery and monkish - he'd make a great hypnotist. Maybe I'm just too old and too fixed on the louder sharper punch of Phil and Tony, but somehow it drains some of the energy of the show.
Sorry.
Emperor's New Clothes springing to mind.
(And why do I hesitate to post this comment?!)
Too good, 3 days is just not long enough. Thanks for another fascinating episode
Plinky plonky noises again!! WHY?? Please let us just have just the archaeology without the "musical" accompaniment.
A very big WADO (thank you in Cherokee) … this episode actually helped me with a key piece of information to make my point in my education economics paper, due today. I chose to focus it on the ROI of literacy. The lady with the pen and book are a perfect illustration of that.
The approach and mood of the show feels more like a documentary than the dramatic and frantic pace that the old Time Team show felt. I do like that each episode represents a day of the dig without a strict time constraint on each episode and the behind-the-scenes crew are included in the episodes, and off course, the new tech and gadgets… no more helicopter visuals?!?! 😝 But I do miss the humor, the banter, and chaos😞
Yeah, you really end up missing the different dynamics and camaraderie between the different members of the team, I think.
I have to say that as a link man Gus has not got the delivery. His half whispery delivery, just never conveys any excitement of a find for me. It contrasts sharply with the old Time Team presentation. What is noticeable for me now is that the loss of Mick Aston, Tony Robbinson and Phil Harding, all characters, have somewhat diminished the delivery. It was partly the back and forth between the cast that partly made the show. Tony was always the slightly overly keen lay man with the foils of Mick and Phil checking him. The new line up has not got that. Having said that , the show is still enjoyable
more please ! looking forward to the last part tommorow :)
I feel like I'm the only one who preferred the old format. That said, I'm glad the reboot has an environmental archeologist on tap and better scanning capabilities. Lots of the tech detours do not seem to add much to the actual dig. They are more of a "oooo, look what we can do now" without substance. New technology is great, but between this one and the last one they didn't suggest anymore information than what was found through other channels. Same for the teleconferences, they aren't showing how it added anything else. Good for pushing the science further, but it doesn't need to make it into the final cut unless something is positively supplemental.
Loving these new episodes! Thank you for coming back!!
Why does the commentator talk as if he"s telling a Winni the Pooh story? It's really annoying and patronizing.
This is FANTASTIC, please keep making these brilliant new episodes, metal detecting is also nice to see.
lovely episode, looking forward to tomorrow's!
Great series... keep going, love the new host voice, almost ASMR
I am really hoping that Phil will be able to make a guest appearance on one of these!
He'd just be grumpy about the edges of the trenches not being cut straight... =P XD
@@rssharkey40 That was my first thought. HAHA And still not one piece of flint anywhere.
@@covrtdesign5279 🤣 loved his flint experiments.
It's so frustrating for me to hear "You can clearly see...", when I rarely can see anything from this distance. I watch in faith that the experts know what they are doing, and BELIEVE in what they've uncovered. It only slightly diminishes my enjoyment of being with this team again. The sign-off was a no brainer..."the only thing I can say is to expect the unexpected". That's what we've come to recognize as a standard for Time Team since the very beginning.---I'll be here, waiting for Day 3!
Maybe a few more highlighted graphic lines? I quite like them not covering each one though with that as it's a bit of training your eye so to speak to find the changes in soil ourselves.
Love the 3-day format. Miss Tony's energy, though.
I love TimeTeam, and always will. My only problem with this new series is that the voice of the presenter is so gentle and unexciting that I have a difficult time not being lulled into sleep. I have had to restart this episode twice already. I like his voice, but I really miss the excitement of Tony, Phill and the others. It IS new and exciting, but it is not presented that way. It is as if it is a calming bed time story.
Archeology at its best!
Absolutely love it good work
I’m sorry but I miss Tony’s vibrant enthusiasm. Gus is a nice man but his voice puts me to sleep. I’ve heard the narration of ‘Goldilocks’ with more excitement!
I really like this new three-episode format over what sometimes felt like the slap-dash pace of the original series.
