How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

Hey fam. We just wanted to say a quick thank you…as you might have seen, earlier this week we shared on our Instagram about some of the negativity we’ve been receiving lately. The last few videos we’ve posted there have been a LOT of comments about us and the decisions we’re making, which sometimes can be a lot to handle (and for us to not start to questioning our decisions). Even though we’ve been doing this for a few years, it’s hard to not let those things get to you, especially when the last few videos we’ve shared, hundreds of people per video have been unsubscribing.
The metrics on a video like the comments, thumbs up, whether people are subscribing/unsubscribing are all indicators that creators like us look at to whether we’ve made a “good” video or not…but it doesn’t account for something really important, which is whether or not you’re someone’s “cup of tea” or not.
We’ve been on a bit of a journey with this topic and it can often feel like walking a tight rope…we’ve been making more of an effort to that go this year and in last week’s video something really interesting happened. Sure, not everyone got it but YOU showed up, in a really big way. Last week’s video went trending on RUclips and was the 20th most popular video for nearly two days. Y’all were RALLYING in the comment section and I just want you to know how much it means to us that you enjoy our flavor of tea…sometimes we’re an earl grey, other times we’re a green tea. Thank you for not being picky and allowing us the space to try new types of tea...I really hope this analogy makes sense. this video is kind of a masterclass in editing. so many channels will make a 45 minute video showing every painstaking stroke of painting. showing just the right amount, and a little speed up sequence with music - exactly what youtube needs. you guys do it right :)

Kilz paint as a first coat, will stop those dark colors from showing through.

Truthfully - we are learning to ignore unsolicited criticism. I wish people only knew how sensitive we are, especially Todd. It's really hard for him to read comments anymore.

I don't think I'll ever understand why people feel it's okay for them to just tell people the nastiest things just because they have changed a path in their life. I was a little disappointed and confused when I first saw you were buying this cabin, but as soon as you explained it, I totally understood and was all in. At the same time, it wasn't up to me to make a comment to you that I was disappointed and confused at that time. It's YOUR life to live the way that's right for you. But my gosh! Some people just go way overboard like you owe it to them to continue to do things the way they want you to. I loved The Land, but I love The Lake, too. You guys are such wonderful workers, role models and just great guys. You are funny and caring and compassionate and thoughtful. I really enjoy watching you for you.
Todd, you did such a great job with the office area! It's beautiful! I love how minimal it is but looks so elegant and bright. That room could look so cold with all those windows looking out onto the lake, but it doesn't. It's very inviting. It was really fun watching you do it. You are so funny and free. I love it and can't wait to see what you work on next.
Tyler, I can't imagine the frustration and heartbreak it is to find that the people you hired and trusted to do the work at The Land couldn't be trusted, after all. Especially when you have to jump through hoops just to get the work done due to timing and codes. I really hope that you won't run into much more (better yet, NO more) of that kind of thing moving on.
I used to be a professional painter and later into my career I ran across an older painter. He told me of a trick for covering dark paint and it works like a charm. Paint Silver paint over the dark paint first, then your color. It reflects the dark color back into the wall and allows your color to sit nicely with out several coats. BTW Sorry about all the negativity on here. I think you are doing a great job!

I can't remember how many hours I've spent painting over a dark coloured wall 😢 when buying a pre-owned home.
Thankfully my next home is going to be built to specification so all the walls will be Dove Grey (a special 3 dimension mix that changes colour with the light in the room) with big windows, lots of colour accents, and plants to interchange.
I'm glad you bought the cabin. Your videos are becoming more playful, inviting, and enjoyable. I didn't realize the videos of the land had traces of seriousness, stress, and anxiety. The office looks great!

We had a renter at my Grandparents apartments, she painted the bathroom orchard dark purple. The painted store had us buy sliver primer paint to cover up the dark purple color and paint it back to white again. It only took one coat of the sliver primer to cover the gassy color. You may need a good primer to cover the dark wall covers. The office room looks fabulous, love how bright and beautiful it came out.

I was going to suggest primer! I’m sure the people at the paint store could recommend the right one to save you painting five or six coats over that purple!

My gosh. That paint made such a difference in your office space. And the place are perfect! When you have a lot of windows like you do, you should always have plenty of plants. They accent the room and provide the space with feeling of life!
Also, lots of windows is the reason the room is cooler than the rest of the house. There's less insulation Because of the windows.

May I suggest painting with kilz for the first coat. It does a really great helping covering colors you prefer to forget! A son painted a room dark marine Corp blue .. he loved it but after he moved to his own home I was eager to paint it a much lighter color. I thought I’d never get it covered but kilz did miracles!
I completely agree, we have a vacation home where every wall was the color of dried blood, we used Kilz to prime with and the light yellow we chose went on no problem with much less paint needed

This video should be titled "Tyler and Todd being totally adorable!" The more wine that was involved was directly correlated to your adorability! The new room looked so beautiful! This new cabin let's you work on the land while still getting your heat and mentally supportive level of aesthics met.
The office looks gorgeous and it's so nice that you don't have to do a lot to transform it. Btw, I totally get why you bought the place. Living in perpetual cold is so exhausting. I used to live in a beautiful 18th century farmhouse but it had hardly any insulation and was heated with wood burners. It was also huge. In winter it felt like all I did was tending the fires. And the place still never got really warm.

When painting over darker colors, i learned you do a coat of light gray color first. Then, the white or lighter color will cover it.
Good to know - some people were suggesting to tint the primer, which we never heard of either!

Great work on the office. The casters of your chairs might chew up the floor.. consider swapping them out for the rollerblade style casters. They are rubber and much friendlier on wood floors!

What a cozy space! It looks AMAZING! The white was a great choice. My sister always pushed paint as a major game changer to transform a living space as cheaply as possible. Boy, was she right. The white, wood, and green plants look perfect together.

Honestly I couldn’t wait for that room to get its makeover, and you guys never disappoint. Absolutely beautiful, fabulous, the bright white against the wood is perfect, rustic but bright and fresh. White linen sheer drapes across the doors with white linen or burlap shades on the windows will help with sun glare and temperature control, also moisture on rainy days, but when rolled up, you wouldn’t even see them. And what about a fake fur, shaggy round area rug in the middle of the floor? Would add some luxe and a chill spot for the animal kids to snuggle on. Love the two work stations, perfect the way you’ve designed them.

The white is going to make the place so bright….my mum taught me that whenever you are trying to cover a dark colour with a light colour paint pale grey as your first undercoat as the grey covers the dark colour but is the perfect first undercoat which means you don’t need to do 3 coats of paint… it’s amazing how it works…ther are technical terms but I can’t remember them… the office looks fab guys see you next wk live ya ❤

Loved the way the content was delivered this week. Fun and entertaining.I enjoy it when you guys are being yourselves and we get to join in your laughter. An opinion you can take or leave. A fluffy, cozy adult size bean bag chair to share in the middle of the room so you two can either face the fireplace or look out at the lake. Only down side is that I think Sqirrel might take ownership of it.
