In a clinical study, 93% of participants reported Dream helped them get better sleep. Click shopbeam.com/tylerandtodd to shop Beam’s biggest sale and get up to 50% off. Don't miss out on this limited-time offer! Only hemp-free Dream flavors are eligible for international shipping!
How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we concluded that establishing a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. This pursuit led us to seek a temporary residence, and after an extensive search, we stumbled upon Geodesic Domes, realizing they perfectly suited our needs while we dedicated ourselves to the gradual realization of our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

Charlie is a cutie but gosh is he stubborn! He has definitely been keeping our plate full but we’re pretty proud of how things are coming together with the containers. Also, we have some pretty big news about a very major life change we’re about to make. The next few weeks we’ll be embarking on a new chapter that let’s just say…it will change EVERYTHING! If you're apart of our Patreon community don't spill the beans 😏

When my sister's dog had to have surgery and be kept as immobile as possible, she used a doggy playpen so he couldn't walk around too much. You could also set up a confined outdoor space so he can go to the toilet without being able to walk around much and he might be happier to go if he can be left to his own devices in a safe space. Just a thought. I'm sure that once he has had his surgery he will recover quickly. Todd was so funny doing the siding on his own. He was chatting away and having a little one man party!

Here's a tip for all those cords. Get gallon sized ziplock freezer bags, write on the front what each cord goes to and put each cord in its own bag. No more trying to figure out which cord goes where or winding cords around your hand, which makes them twist up.
I think you could leave Charlie alone in the house and he would be fine. And outside on his own for short potty breaks. Ask your vet but try it. Charlie knows how much he can handle.

So my 10 year old aussie tore his ACL about a week after I tore mine. Neither of us had surgery...and both of us recovered with a combination of rest, ice application, and progressive walking exercises in about 8 weeks. We used aspirin as an analgesic and to assist him with the anxiety of not being able to move about as normal, I used valarian dog chewies at night. The aspirin I used for the dog was liver flavored according to the bottle (yuck) and he loved it. I wore a knee brace. Carbon the aussie ate his. Like Charlie, he hated the belly lifter. I ended up getting a full vest/body lift to assist him with going outside for the first few weeks. It took about 8 weeks of rehab to return to normal levels of exercise/activity. As I am nearly as old (in dog years) as my aussie, I can say that both of us old-timers were quite happy with slow non-invasive medicine. My injury was a bit more extensive...and I had blood in the knee space so the dog actually recovered a bit more quickly.

yea, we-my husband, daughter, &I took turns sitting with our dog on the floor on her dog bed to keep her calm since she was an almost 2 year old play monster. I also slept with her on a mattress on the floor. We did this for 3 months. The other option was to keep her locked in her crate & we just couldn’t do that. And yes, the pain meds the first week after the surgery really messed with her system & she had to wear a diaper. But she hasn’t had any issues these 8 years since her surgery.

I have a little decorating tip for Todd: I've decided that white lights can stay up all winter. I convinced myself that olored lights are for hristmas, andhite lights are for inter. I use both during the holidays, but the post holiday blahs can be eased by leaving white lights up. It's such a dark time of year, turning off all the lights after Christmas is such a downer. I also hang a lot of artificial snowflakes and icicles from my curtain rods in front of the window, have snow-frosted wreaths and garland, candles (LOTS of candles) to keep the winter theme going. It helps a lot with the after-Christmas blues.

It's not the most fun, but I'd recommend a play pen, a leash when outdoors, lots of treats toys (lick mats, kongs) for both doggies (and treats for you guys as well), for after surgery . After 5 weeks PO, he's still taking Rimadyl, Trazodone, and we're weaning him off Gabapentin. We still have 5 week until his X-rays to evaluate bone healing. He's up to 2 20 minute walks a day (still no jumping, wrestling, bouncing, furniture sitting or running). A Help 'em up harness is also nice for getting him in and out of the car without jumping.

Wonderful to see the great care you are giving Charlie. He is so beautiful. The container home is looking so amazing. What a wonderful difference that siding makes. You are building a gorgeous home. I don't know if you know a trick in removing the stain on your fireplace doors. We mix a paste up of wood ashes and water and used on a regular basis, they stay crystal clear. Thought I would share that with you. That same "ash paste" works good on a glass cook top, windows and mirrors. Keeps everything brilliantly clean with a little elbow grease.

Our dog had the same operation to both hind legs - it really helps to use a large crate so they can not make the mistake of getting up and moving other than turning around and lying back down. We used it for the first 4 weeks then got a baby fence to give him a little more room to move around. It is a really hard journey but they finally get used to it and will use the bathroom. They have to resign to it.

You could put them around Charlie’s bed to reduce where he can go, then you wouldn’t have to jump up and tell him to lay down all the time. A second option would be a crate to keep him still while he recovers. Lots of love!

If you anticipate on continuing with the podcast after the container home is complete, maybe setup the spare bedroom as your primary studio (filming and editing) that can be converted to a bedroom when you have guest over instead of the other way. Just a thought. Love yall!!!

It will just take a little while. Don’t worry about it too much. Not pooping is typical for pain meds. My Rosie did the same thing. It will be ok, eventually.

YES, I definitely am surprised at the amount of video-producing equipment one requires! It would be beyond MY ability to set-up and then use! I have to call my son every time something goes "wrong" with my laptop ... he very respectfully does not roll his eyes at me when he explains how simple my issue is!

OK, so this is all about Charlie. When our Standard Poodle had back-to-back surgeries on one hip that ended up taking over 3 months for surgical recovery - when she was finally able to have the leg "untied" from her side and could start to put it down again - and we were frantic to figure out how to help an incredibly active dog get through this, we discovered a number of things that helped. After the 3 months she was able to weight bear again, but had forgotten that she should walk/run on 4 legs instead of 3, so we started another 3 months of rehab - twice weekly + at-home exercises during the off days. Anyway, it was about 6 months of surgery-recovery-rehab with a dog that went through bouts of depression until we read that mental stimulation is as draining as physical and we could help her "take the edge off." We taught her all kinds of tricks, fed her with what they call enrichment things, like putting food into a puzzle where the dog has to push open little doors to get to it, read to her. and found videos for dogs on RUclips that all helped so much (she especially loved the classical music and you could see her visibly relax when we put it on). Nowadays you can find even more ways to enrich and stimulate them mentally (to help with the stubbornness, restlessness, and depression) online and on RUclips. Post-surgery you're going to have the recovery to get through, and, following that if it is available out your way, I highly recommend rehab. We were lucky to have a dynamite rehab doctor who had just opened her clinic and our pup was the first to use her treadmill in a water tank and balance balls for dogs that are egg shaped and help them with early weight bearing. She also used ramps, stairs, and walking around traffic cones and stepping over little "jumps" - all those she taught us to reproduce at home. I know some people will think we went to extremes, but her recovery was so good that she did not have any kind of relapse for the remainder of her life.
So that's the shortest summary of our tackling a long and involved medical journey with our girl that I can write - and even with that, there are so many things I have left out. If you just start with trying to enrich Charlie's time with things that use his nose, eyes, and ears, I think it will help. I'm sure other people who have gone through this will have other good ideas (like the X-pens which we still had around from our Irish Wolfhound days). Just put out the word and I'm sure you will be flooded with ones that have been successfully used with people/dogs that watch your guys every week. I hope this helps ...

Your golden must of had a partial tear that was able to re heal. Charlie's is completely disconnected and no longer attached in anyway to his knee so it's just sort of dangling there if that makes sense? Surgery is the only way, unfortunately

Now I'm thinking about what you guys can do to create a studio for your podcasts. Maybe once the container house is done, you can turn the dome into a recording studio. Of course, it won't be all that comfy in the winter. Hmm...maybe one of the spare bedrooms in the container house. That way you wouldn't have to set up and take down the equipment every time you recorded.
The toolbelts are adorable. I've seen people attach suspenders to theirs so the belts don't drag their pants down when they're full of tools and nails/screws.

I just adore you two. Thank you for always bringing a smile to my face and filling my 22:02 heart with warm fuzzies. I have an 11 year old Golden “Wrigley”. He tore his hamstring several years ago and just like Charlie he was fine one minute and the next he could barely walk. I had to keep him calm and his mobility restricted for 6 weeks which was nearly impossible. I finally went out and bought a large indoor kennel and basically had to keep him confined until he healed. It broke my heart to have to confine him in a crate but it was far better than ending up having to undergo extensive surgery. You both have such kind, carrying and loving hearts, its easy to see how much you love all your pets and it’s no different than if your own child was I’ll how much we suffer emotionally alongside our dear pets when they are I’ll or injured. We just want to see them happy, healthy and pain free. You mentioned you didn’t like how sedated Charlie’s pain medical made him. Have you tried to cut the dose in half during the day and giving him a full dose in the evening before bedtime, just a thought. Best of luck to all of you and Todd I’m already playing Christmas songs on my piano lol so I say string up the Christmas lights, hang the mistletoe, whip me up a cup of eggnog and let the merry making begin Ho! Ho! Ho!

Back in the day, my dog was bitten be another and it severed my dog’s back leg ACL. We coped for a while by making a leather sling that protected the dog’s leg from dragging and he got around fine on three legs. I don’t know how long it will be until the surgery but that would be temporary solution.

Best thing for an active older dog with an injury is a crate. If that is something you can't deal with then the next best thing is a dog fence that can be used in/outdoors. He might hate them both, but ligament injuries in elder dogs are no joke. What he needs sometimes will not jive with your emotions. No he can't pee with the belly support on. Girls can, boys can with a lot of difficulty. My suggestion is to put a doggie fence up. They have them in wire or plastic. I recommend the wire as it's easier for him to see through. This gives him a restricted outdoor space to go potty in without being hovered over. I hope this advice helps. (from a lifetime dog trainer and vet tech) Todd's external monologue was extremely entertaining lol.

Try using a short leash while outside and set up a small playpen area to keep him contained. This will keep him safe while in doors and allow to control him while outside. I had the same problem with my dog many years ago so I can have much empathy for you both.

So sorry to hear about Charlie! That happened to my girl back in early 2021. Due to her age & weight I decided to not do the surgery (grateful my vet told me that because of her weight there was actually only a 20% chance that the surgery would even work) & older dogs have a much harder time healing from that surgery. My girl made it two years before the pain was just too much, I had to put her down 9/22/23. I’ll pray for Charlie’s recovery!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I am fortunate the pain meds I got for my dog Max just let him sleep a lot but he was able to get up and go outside for bathroom breaks with no problem. I didn’t experience his having mood changes so the pain meds worked great. I just used them for three days. His feet were infected and he was licking them so I need him to relax enough for them to start healing. The meds did the trick for me so I was fortunate.

Many years ago our 2 year old Great Pyrenees suffered a spinal injury and was paralyzed mid waist back. He had extensive rehab and lived another 9 years. However I spent two years carrying his hind quarters in and out for potty breaks. Towards the end of his life I also carried his hind quarters when he went out so he wouldn’t damage his paw dragging it. While I know your situation is different I wanted to share this Blue Dog harness I got which helped tremendously. I live I a very rural area with lots of uneven ground and obstacles. My guy always wanted to go to the farthest place for potty. It was hard on his pride and my body. As Charlie is for you… he was worth it. Sending a lot of love and the harness that helped me help my big guy Samo. His insestance that he could run, play go far etc… was quite normal according to the rehab and surgery folks. Dogs adapt to injury very differently than humans. As you are taxed physically and tested mentally hold images of Charlie’s good days and all your love front and center in your minds. I have an image of the harness I would share with you but I already miss stepped sharing. 😢 ❤. Hang in there with your sweet guy! There will be better days.
