Even as someone who actually did like Sonic 06 back on it's original release I always thought it was a bit silly when people said this game could be better if the devs had more time and the team wasn't split since I thought the game at it's core was too flawed to make a difference so you can imagine how happy I was to be proven wrong when this project came into being. I really love how this whole thing turned out and it's genuinely made me wish Sonic Team had done this themselves instead of sweeping the game under the rug and trying their best to distance themselves from it. It really does go to show that the only thing holding a good idea back is how creative and talented the individual(s) is.
This shows how Sonic 06 would have been the greatest Sonic game of all time, possibly one of the top 100 best games of all time if given a reasonable deadline and a remotely acceptable amount of resources
This is video pretty much explains why I keep coming back to this fan project. P-06 is the closest thing we'll get to seeing this game be actually finished in any capacity. Yes, there is that Sonic 06 remake mod for Generations, but that's just a retelling of the original within the constraints of Generations gameplay.
While P-06 has it’s own thing and does something that Generations or hell possibly any other Sonic game didn’t. Like what game has you upgrade the hedgehog to game more speed and combos?
I love how with Sonic and Shadow you can chain together killing enemies to get a higher score and when you hit the ground you get the score depending on how much enemy’s you killed. But as Sonic you can use the bounce multiple times to delay it giving you the score which allows you to find more enemy’s which can get you a higher score. And with Shadow you can homing attack then use the chaos spear then honing attack again to get you farther which can help you get to other enemies to continue your combo. (plus you can use the chaos snap to continue the combo too) you can also chain combos with blaze with her double jump which can also be a triple jump if you use her spinning tornado attack after a double jump then jumping again.
I feel like I so rarely come across video essays from new creators that actually argue like a proper essay would, with a thesis and all of that. This is a really good start, I’m excited to see what you do going forward!
You hit the nail on the head with this idea, cause I felt this way too, the game just feels so smooth and everything just links and works together. When you go for S ranks and get a perfect run, you really feel like the characters doing what they do and makes the game pretty immersive where you have to think on your toes to extend your action chains to get as high of a bonus as you can.
Sonic 06 is one of my friend groups favorite meme games. I used to throw sonic parties where we would marathon a whole campaign. I think P06 my need to be how i resurect the sonic party
This video perfectly encapsulates what I and many others feel about this game. The little improvements to the movesets and the level design makes the flow so fun , and in my opinion, make it better than Unleashed ( which is top tier flow in Sonic games ). If anybody is interested at looking at speed runs of this game, I recommend checking out Stelmo98. He speed runs all sorts of different categories and is a close friend of ChaosX, so you can get little dev insiders from him like upcoming nerfs/buffs to moves in the next patch, release windows, etc. Also, ChaosX has stated that even if SEGA approached him with putting PO6 on consoles, he would decline because of SEGA’s attitude toward developer independent creativity. Anyways, this is an excellent first video, and I can’t wait to see some more videos of you discussing fan games!
This re creation of sonic 06 is just absolutely phenomenal and it's just great to see all of this play and out and cant wait until its 100% done and seeing all of these sonic fan games is great to see. And I agree, that silver animation (especially tropical forest) is just amazing

Project 06 is essentially what Sonic 06 would have been if it wasn't horribly rushed and had a genius developer on its team. And massive props to ChaosX for turning the biggest disaster and one of the worst Sonic games into the greatest Sonic game of the Adventure Era.
Yeeee. This project is EXACTLY what imagined but WAY BETTER and does so much more that it truly catches the spirit of what the should have been. Im more Ecstatic for when its fully completed and done

As someone who never got to play the original and finished P-06 a few days ago: It feels JUST LIKE an Adventure game. Once you get a feel of the controls, it'll feel like you've been playing it for years.

I'm hoping they re-enable story mode at some point. I want to actually play through the game proper rather than just picking levels. Espeically since I never played the OG game. I'm fine if they cut out the overworld and just transition you from cut scene to level to cut scene like in Adventure 2. Or maybe they'll redo the overworld and just cut out the side missions. Either way really hoping P-06 reaches that point eventually.
You think that Project 06 will change the story at some point ? I don't know how they could do this properly while still staying faithful to the characters introduced in this game, but I saw an animatic of the scene where Elise jumps from Eggman's ship and Sonic catches her. Except that when saying "I'd rather die than be your prisoner again ! Farewell.", she looked sassy and had very theatrical movements in this animatic, and it was really fun to see. And if Elise would be like that in the game, I'm sure the fans would like her a lot more (also she would probably a much better fit as Sonic's girlfriend then she canonically is since he's sassy too). Of course, if this scene works without changing the dialogues, some dialogues would need heavy changes to work, and so would the cutscenes and the way that they play out. So changing the story wouldn't be easy. Changing Mephiles while keeping the stuff about him that works might not be an easy task either. Yeah considering the enormous amount of work that it would require, I don't think that they would change the story. But with some help from other talented people, I'm sure that ChaosX could pull it off. He's already done so much for this game after all.
This video is pretty nice, and while there's a couple of nitpicks I can say I think the biggest thing would just be double checking some information. Moves like Shadow's chaos snap, spear/lance, and blast are all actually present in the original game, they simply lack utility due to speed, range, or control. The footage lines up well with commentary and the only thing I could imagine is maybe having a more notable couple of edits to act as psuedo bookmarks or chapters for discussion points. Otherwise, I'm eager to see what else you've got cooking for us. Good stuff!

Project 06 is so good that I actually think it’s my favorite sonic game, of course, it is just a fan project, but at this point, it’s basically an entire game and not even “just a fan project”, and it isn’t even finished yet. It’s insane how Chaosx managed to transform a game considered to be one of the worst, if not, the worst sonic game, into what I now consider the best sonic game. Fan made or not, it’s absolutely incredible, and I’m sure we can unanimously agree on that. Oh and nice video by the way!
I've been saying for years that Sonic 06 would have been an amazing game if Sega gave Sonic Team enough time to finish the project and not split the team in half to make Secret Rings. The fact that Sega released *NINE SONIC GAMES* in the span of 2 years just goes to show that Sega only cared about profit at the time, they didn't care about the quality of their games. Thank you ChaosX for bringing justice to what could have been the greatest Sonic game of all time!
I hope Kishimoto can take a look at this marvel for inspiration for future titles. Combine that with the open world formula, DMC inspired combat, and hopefully momentum.
That's cool. I'm glad '06 got another lease on life, even if not from Sega itself. When I watched the GameGrumps playthrough ofi t years ago, I found the game's bugs funny, but I did notice that under the surface, there was a lot there. You can't call a game with that many playable characters and story beats lazy. It was clear to me that tight deadlines and crunch had ruined what it could havebeen. Shame.

I'm surprised Sega has been pretty quiet and chill so far with this fan project compared to how Nintendo was with say for example; the AM2R (even though they were already planning on remaking metroid 2 who knows how long) but thats another story. I don't think Sega/Sonic team wants to look back or redo Sonic 06 ever so i believe that plays a huge factor in all this.
tbh Sega in general has always been chill with fan content, they're usually totally fine with fan projects. Sonic Mania itself I think was also basically a fan project that got pitched and promoted as a release with Sega iirc lol
Because Sega is only a tiny fraction of the conglomerate that is the Sammy Holdings. Sonic itself isn't even the most profitable Sega IP, and never has been. Sammy uses the Sonic brand to put a family friendly face for the company, as they mostly deal with gambling machines. Every time a fan makes a Sonic fan game it only reinforces that public image.
I one day hope that nintendo finally gets their penance for how conservative they are with any of their ips and sega makes more refined games like frontiers so they finally get streamlined into a mainstream game again. #MakeSonicGreatAgain

A good question for sure! I think they could serve a good purpose to the atmosphere of the game but could potentially muddy the short-but-sweet flow the game currently has
i think that having the hub worlds could be the only thing we need before P-06 becomes the definitive way to fully experience sonic 06. i'm the type of guy who likes remakes to remain faithful to the original as much as they can (while adding new things to enhance the experience) and so far i can say that P-06 has remained extremely faithful to the original when it comes to the stages while giving you options to customize your experience. so yeah i think that hub worlds and combining them with the cutscenes + stages would make this the #1 way to experience sonic 06 from the start of sonic's story ALL the way to the final story.
There should be, it is just not clear if they will be. There is also the minor issue that the hub worlds need the town missions to really make sense, otherwise they are just as empty as Station Square was in SA1. That is actually why the hubmissions are the one thing from 06 that they kept for future 3D Sonic games that have hubs.

Could you define "more polishing" in this context? Kingdom Valley, I can maybe understand a bit, but what's wrong with Tropical Jungle? I honestly thought that was the best cinematic in the whole game.

I really hope the story cutscenes, missions and hub worlds are restored but I doubt that'll be the case :( I'd even pay for this if SEGA licensed it the way they did for the classic Sonic Android ports

It's batshit insane to me that ChaosX just eyeballed almost everything and hadn't actually played the original game until after like a year in development. It's like the complete inverse of Halo Anniversary or Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy where the devs used the original games as a framework and literally built the new versions of the games on top of them and somehow managed to fuck everything up. Hearing someone actually say the Project 06 name out loud now makes me wonder if ChaosX is going to actually change the name to Nights of Kronos like he teased on Twitter a few months back...
I S-ranked all the stages but not sure if I received the rewards. Does the game explicitly tell you you’ve unlocked them? Also, how do you even execute Silver’s AOE’s attack?
So, when Project 06 is fully completed do you think that it will get some type of full release where we don't have to download the multiple demos of it in order to play all of it?
the one thing about the sonic 06 deadlines for christmas is that i doubt that was really a problem, since devs would know what the deadlines are from the start. the only problem at that point would be trying to extend said deadline, which wouldn't have gone over well. The real issues were yuji naka leaving and the team being split in two.

I've had some experience with Adobe programs and have had a few college classes in the editing field. I still have a long way to go but am happy you enjoyed the style!
Shadow's Chaos abilities were in Retail 06 they were just... awful. Like near unusable awful. Chaos Snap had no wind up animation so you just like hacker style teleported around the map. Chaos Lance from what I remember consumed so much of the gauge for incredibly little payoff in the damage department and Chaos Blast was... not a blast at all more like a small little aura you put around yourself that killed stuff too close to you. The versions in P06 that we see are that fantasy realized to a degree. Snap now has a wind up animation to it, being the actual teleport queue we see in Shadow's CG cutscene and in every other teleprotation instance we've seen from him. Chaos Lance actually has some AoE to it and consumes way less gauge, and Chaos Blast's animations and range have all been reverted to how the move behaved in Shadow The Hedgehog 2005, even including Jason Griffith's voice lines spliced in whenever the ability is used. Just those improvements alone to one character make the whole project worth playing

Well there's many reasons why the original was a huge failure For one at that time the head of sonic team yuji naka left sega in 2006 To start his own company probe and the game was rushed by sega and sega did not give sonic team enough time To like polish the game and to make sure that the game run smoothly This is what the problem with saga they don't give their development team the proper development time And those are the factors Of us getting mediocre 3D sonic titles for the past decade sega needs to give there development team proper development time

Retail Chaos Blast was so pitiful I have a hard time believing it was real, despite having played 06 to completion back in those days

@@SPONGCHAOfrom what I heard, SEGA can be just as protective as Nintendo to their franchises, but they chose to be lenient with Sonic specifically. The RUclips channel Moon Channel actually covers on why Nintendo is so overprotective, and why sonic gets special treatment. I highly recommend checking them out
TBF Sonic 2006 was such a disaster that it's completely understandable why they wouldn't want to be associated with it. It's so bad, even Sega themselves made fun of it every now and then.

This video brought up a solid point I don't see often in discussions on P-06: should there be hub worlds?
A good question for sure! I think they could serve a good purpose to the atmosphere of the game but could potentially muddy the short-but-sweet flow the game currently has
i think that having the hub worlds could be the only thing we need before P-06 becomes the definitive way to fully experience sonic 06.
i'm the type of guy who likes remakes to remain faithful to the original as much as they can (while adding new things to enhance the experience) and so far i can say that P-06 has remained extremely faithful to the original when it comes to the stages while giving you options to customize your experience.
so yeah i think that hub worlds and combining them with the cutscenes + stages would make this the #1 way to experience sonic 06 from the start of sonic's story ALL the way to the final story.
There should be, it is just not clear if they will be. There is also the minor issue that the hub worlds need the town missions to really make sense, otherwise they are just as empty as Station Square was in SA1. That is actually why the hubmissions are the one thing from 06 that they kept for future 3D Sonic games that have hubs.

Kingdom Valley, I can maybe understand a bit, but what's wrong with Tropical Jungle? I honestly thought that was the best cinematic in the whole game.

It's batshit insane to me that ChaosX just eyeballed almost everything and hadn't actually played the original game until after like a year in development. It's like the complete inverse of Halo Anniversary or Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy where the devs used the original games as a framework and literally built the new versions of the games on top of them and somehow managed to fuck everything up.
Hearing someone actually say the Project 06 name out loud now makes me wonder if ChaosX is going to actually change the name to Nights of Kronos like he teased on Twitter a few months back...
I S-ranked all the stages but not sure if I received the rewards. Does the game explicitly tell you you’ve unlocked them? Also, how do you even execute Silver’s AOE’s attack?

So, when Project 06 is fully completed do you think that it will get some type of full release where we don't have to download the multiple demos of it in order to play all of it?
the one thing about the sonic 06 deadlines for christmas is that i doubt that was really a problem, since devs would know what the deadlines are from the start. the only problem at that point would be trying to extend said deadline, which wouldn't have gone over well. The real issues were yuji naka leaving and the team being split in two.
They literally had a collective 18 days to make silvers campaign, deadlines were def a major issue in its development cycle

I've had some experience with Adobe programs and have had a few college classes in the editing field. I still have a long way to go but am happy you enjoyed the style!
Shadow's Chaos abilities were in Retail 06 they were just... awful. Like near unusable awful. Chaos Snap had no wind up animation so you just like hacker style teleported around the map. Chaos Lance from what I remember consumed so much of the gauge for incredibly little payoff in the damage department and Chaos Blast was... not a blast at all more like a small little aura you put around yourself that killed stuff too close to you. The versions in P06 that we see are that fantasy realized to a degree. Snap now has a wind up animation to it, being the actual teleport queue we see in Shadow's CG cutscene and in every other teleprotation instance we've seen from him. Chaos Lance actually has some AoE to it and consumes way less gauge, and Chaos Blast's animations and range have all been reverted to how the move behaved in Shadow The Hedgehog 2005, even including Jason Griffith's voice lines spliced in whenever the ability is used. Just those improvements alone to one character make the whole project worth playing
Love the insight on this! When I had made this video, my playthrough of 06 when I was a kid was a distant memory. I was more unfamiliar with many of the mechanics.
Once Sega chose to merge with Sammie vs. giving control of the company to Sega of America they went straight to sh*t.
I still think he should continue to patch the game. Like fixing the camera

Only mistake I see is that Sonic 06 was for the _seventh_ gen consoles. Sixth gen was PS2, GameCube, Xbox, ~~and Dreamcast~~

and the game was rushed by sega and sega did not give sonic team enough time To like polish the game and to make sure that the game run smoothly This is what the problem with saga they don't give their development team the proper development time And those are the factors Of us getting mediocre 3D sonic titles for the past decade sega needs to give there development team proper development time
