That's the sign that Zann isn't just a warlord. After the raid for the Emperor's secrets he didn't just disappear. He went to Byss to seek the power and mysterious treasure of Palpatine. He found the Reborn Emperor himself and was made the Hand of the Emperor. He was sent to eliminate the Emperor's enemies to the Outer Rim and found perfect weapon to achieve his goal and interests - the leaderless and powerful major faction, which was in the middle of power struggle between heirs of Zsinj - Admirals Screed, Trigit and Bandjeer.
By the authority of the Reborn Emperor himself he achieved their submission. Now he's on the way to help his new Master to retake his fractured empire

That Ord Mantell defense was top-notch. Every defensive structure utilized, maximum damage.
Zann def has my favorite imperial faction roster. To be fair i just really like artillery ships and the aggressor is the only one besides the peltast.
For the concept of unit experience and "pips," do you mean you can't add icons to a unit on the battlefield, or the icons on the Galactic Map? Maybe a particle effect could be used to indicate the evolution of the unit.
I think it'd be fine if the experience upgrade happened after a battle concludes, in the way the World Devastator is changed from one tiee to another, but instead the unit models might change from fresh off the factory floor to progressively more gritty and worn appearances (though for Rebel units the progression might go the other way from hand-me-downs/junk to more pristine equipment.)
Of course, all of this depends on the feasibility that the load this would add to both the game keeping track of everything, as well as your need for 2x-4x additional art assets.
Unfortunately pips or other icon/text indicators attaching to the unit on galactic are not possible

Hey quick question how do I make it so the new republic actually is threatening. Eriadu and the corporate sector keep taking them out in era one for me when I play as the imperials or the hutts. Is there a way to stack the starting forces so that they actually try and take coruscant instead of being wiped out in era one.
The Eriadu AI is set up to generally make attacks they can't win, but there's never a guarantee on which factions will last, and the AI is dealing with the same limitations as each other. If you want to guarantee a more powerful new Republic, you'll have to start in a later era.

What’s the best starter faction/difficulty on a progressive map if you’re new to the mod but not necessarily to EaW?
Pentastar is pretty good cause they have a really easy to defend starting position
