Can confirm Summerween is happening 😜 also same I’m so excited for the new Paul Tremblay!!! I also agree None of This is True is one of Lisa Jewells best and think you might enjoy it! 👏
Every time Hanif is mentioned in a video I run to the comments to sing his praises. Not only is he an incredible writer, but he's super active is his community (Columbus, OH) and is just so kind and lovely. You're going to love They Can't Kill Us
I'm gonna push Blood over Bright Haven once more. It's probably my favorite book of last year and had a reveal that made me gasp and have to process it for a few minutes.
It's not a thriller or a mystery, but Harrow the Ninth has plot twists that had my jaw on the floor. It's also just generally a pretty wild of a book, as Gideon was.
OMG YAY!! I did what I had to do as a fantasy girly haha I couldn't pass up the chance and I knew there was no way you were ever going to read it 😅I genuinely hope you love it but either way I can't wait to see what you think
Chuck Palahniuk has a lot of insane plot twists, specifically Haunted and Invisible Monsters. Personally, as much as I love Invisible Monsters (really fun and campy but it might be too dated for you, like, it's a very 90s book), I feel like you might vibe with Haunted- it's about authors at a writer's retreat that descends into general madness. The plot is also broken up by short stories that are supposed to be the work of the characters in the book, too.
I recently read a book because a one star review said they’re rather get a root canal then read the book ever again… I gave it 4.5 stars. It’s such a fun concept to do.
one of my favourite slow burn plot twists is in elena knows by claudia piñeiro, i don't think it's necessarily intended to be shocking but the realisation of what was really going on absolutely floored me when i read it another is penance by eliza clark, which made me completely reconsider everything i'd just read after i finished it
I'm excited for you to read The Final Empire because Brandon Sanderson is the first author I think of when someone says "plot twist". If you end up reading the whole Era 1 Mistborn trilogy, the plot twist in Hero of Ages is *chef's kiss*.
Agreed! I've only read Affinity by her and watched The Handmaiden (which is a Korean movie inspired by Fingersmith) but the twists were shocking and I loved that they had lesbian relationships
I want to try more of Sarah Waters. I read Tipping the Velvet last year and it just wasn't for me but I really love her writing and I enjoyed the first half so I'd like to give her another shot. I picked up the Fingersmith and the Paying Guests not too long ago so I'll pick up my next Sarah Waters soon 😊
I've read The Fingersmith because of your comment! And as I'm a Victorian period obsessed girl, I've been really really thrilled throughout 💜 Thank you!
Ughhh just finished Gideon the Ninth a couple weeks ago- loved it and then it tore my heart out. I’m so excited and legit scared for Harrow the Ninth and another heartbreak!
The way I almost cackled outloud at work when I saw it was The Final Empire!!! I'm excited, cause I'm a mistborn fan, BUT I'm worried it won't be your vibe. Can't wait to see how it turns out though!! Also, you were right, I did skip to the member tbr jar section and then went back to watch the rest of the video haha.
Okay not sure if you've read this, but Triptych by Karin Slaughter (first in the Will Trent series) has a mid-story plot twist that actually made me gasp aloud and re-read part of the book to make sure I was understanding it correctly! I think it was a 4 star read overall for me, but so worth it for just that moment 👌
Im excited for literally every book you mentioned!!! This is going to be one hell of a season🌼🌷 Im also currently reading The Final Empire & enjoying it A LOT! I'm so happy you're prioritizing your enjoyment more, we dont deserve another meh reading year! lol
Honestly your 3 jar pulls are 3 of my favorite books ever. I read Ella Minnow Pea as a teenager and adored it (still do!). The 4th Veronica Speedwell is my favorite. And I just read Mistborn 1 and surprised myself with how much I enjoyed it!!!
I am SO excited to see you read The Final Empire! I read it for the first time just last year (my brother has been pestering me about reading it) and really enjoyed it! I'm now currently on the last one of the original trilogy and the books have just gotten progressively better.
Also, I’m only 3 minutes in but I am SO EXCITED to see Exoskeletons on your TBR shelf (I haven’t noticed it there before). It was my favorite book last year 😍
i'm glad you held up bloom because that's what I would have recommended for a plot twist book! not even sure if you can call it a plot twist but I simply did gasp many times during that last chapter.
Ella Minnow Pea is so silly and creative! Also, I think I spy Maame on your TBR shelf. I just read that one over the weekend and I think you will appreciate it. Interesting story and some good representation I don't see often in books, so I enjoyed it.
Ella Minnow Pea is one of my favorite books ever! I read it in middle school or high school (don’t remember!) for the first time and I loved it so much that I kinda stole the school copy…as in, it may have never found its way back to the classroom shelf and it’s been in mine for nearly two decades now 😅 just thinking about it now makes me want to read it again, so I REALLY hope you love it as much as I do! ❤
I read The Final Empire last year and loved it. It was a 5 star read for me. Brandon Sanderson crafts a world and magic system that is very well thought out and very interesting. I hope you enjoy it.
Yes! I came here to recommend Fingersmith! If I could read one book for the first time again, this would be it. (Also, The Handmaiden is a superb adaptation!)
I literally rewound when you said "smut-a-thon" because I couldn't believe what I had heard lmao. & fun bc I'm reading the first veronica speedwell right now on your recommendation (i'm loving it so thank you) 🌻happy spring
Sorry if I missed you reading this before since it's a bit older, but "the 7 and a half deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle" is both my fav mystery thriller and the twists were wild!!! Hope you have fun with "Bloom" it's like cottagecore wlw Hannibal, I had a fun time myself 😊
I really liked the twist in The Game by Scott Kershaw. Actually thinking you're reading about something then figuring out your not reading about that at all.!
Highly recommend the Graphic Audio for The Final Empire! It's what helped me and a friend get through it when, even as Sanderson lovers, it was daunting :)
I just read Bloom! I really enjoyed it, wish it was longer tho. I wanted to spend more time post twist, take the time to draw out the final act and go in on the horror. I gave it a 4.25!
The Twyford Code by Janice Hallett has one of my all-time favourite plot twists. I both did and didn't see it coming (you have to read it to get it). It was great.
Ah! A Dangerous Collaboration is my fave of the series. I hope you love it! & BUTCHER AND BLACKBIRD! Omg I loooooved that, I can't wait to hear your thoughts.
The Appeal by Janice Hallett has a fairly good plot twist. Also Murder in the Family by Cara Hunter has countless twists and turns. Both books are mixed media which is fun
Murder in the Family would be a really good Book Club pick too. I read it with another channel (Allison on a Book Break) as her stop and start buddy read and it made for a fun discussion book.
I think you would love Paradise 1 by David Wellington - it feels like a grown up Illuminae (sadly without the mixed media elements). I’m about it halfway through it so far and am loving it.
not a thriller or mystery but as long as the lemon trees grow had a really surprising twist to me (maybe not for everyone) it was also a five star read so this might just be an excuse to get you to read it lol
I’m not sure if this is why you didn’t like it, but I thought that she didn’t pull off the balance needed to contradict the unintended (I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt here “don’t believe women” message. Also, no matter what, the fact that 40-year-old? When after a 15-year-old Mark? (I can’t remember that he does, but it was something like that.) Is not in dispute.
Twyford Code and Murder of Roger Ackroyd for mystery, red rising (the whole trilogy has so many twists through out), and gild series for romantasy (which I don’t think is your genre lol)
One of the Good Guys by Araminta Hall (from Gillian Flynn's publishing imprint) had an interesting premise/twist, but I think expecting and anticipating plot twists can take away from the experience a little bit.
KAYLA! WE’RE DOING THE SAME VIDEO SERIES AT THE SAME TIME?? WHAT?? i also have been in a huge dip in book quality (2 five stars out of 63 books in 6 months) and i just started a series called five star finder where im reading 5 star predictions! i did 5 star authors last week like youre doing, i think im doing friend recs next! this is going to be so fun for me to watch haha
I'm not everyone! The only five star Lisa Jewell for me is before she got into writing those mystery thrillers. Its "The House We Grew Up In" and is more of a family drama and has a hoarder mom. Relatable for me and a great book
Ok I know this is late but TRUST ME you need to read Kill for me Kill for You by Steve Cavanagh. It is so twisty so fast paced and just so good. IMO, it’s the Kind worth Killing (which I loved) but somehow even better
Did I scrub straight to the TBR jar section before going back to the beginning??? Yes, I did. No shame 😅 Did my jaw drop on the third pick? Also, yes! I hope you enjoy it! I’m a big fan!
"I've been in... not a slump... just in a... what's a word for it? A pit of despair, perhaps?" 😂😂😂
It’s so freaking real tho omg 🫣😭😭😭
You’re the most dramatic! I love it ❤😂
@@em-keck9520 lol right? I thought she was looking for a LESS dramatic word than "slump" but then she went with "pit of despair" 🤣
Oh, do watch our for the rodents of unusual size if you're going near the pit of dispair...
I am soooooo excited for Mistborn! 🎉🎉
Brandy Sandy 😆😆 Sooo excited for these spring picks!!
Can confirm Summerween is happening 😜 also same I’m so excited for the new Paul Tremblay!!! I also agree None of This is True is one of Lisa Jewells best and think you might enjoy it! 👏

I'm gonna push Blood over Bright Haven once more. It's probably my favorite book of last year and had a reveal that made me gasp and have to process it for a few minutes.
Just finished this book! So good!
It's not a thriller or a mystery, but Harrow the Ninth has plot twists that had my jaw on the floor. It's also just generally a pretty wild of a book, as Gideon was.
Seconded that book is BONKERS.
kayla said she loves books partially told in second person too
Very true. This booking is nothing if not ???!!??!!!!!!!!!!!??
oh ABSOLUTELY yes!
Ok y’all are getting me so hyped, I just finished Gideon a couple weeks ago
OMG Ella Minnow Pea is a modern classic; I'm so excited for you!
OMG YAY!! I did what I had to do as a fantasy girly haha I couldn't pass up the chance and I knew there was no way you were ever going to read it 😅I genuinely hope you love it but either way I can't wait to see what you think
The way she said whhaattt the fuucckk lol made the whole video
"I'm Frightened." hahahahahahaha
Chuck Palahniuk has a lot of insane plot twists, specifically Haunted and Invisible Monsters. Please share the title with the class 😄(me)
Anxious People by Fredrick Backman
one of my favourite slow burn plot twists is in elena knows by claudia piñeiro, i don't think it's necessarily intended to be shocking but the realisation of what was really going on absolutely floored me when i read it
another is penance by eliza clark, which made me completely reconsider everything i'd just read after i finished it

“The Fingersmith” by Sarah Winters is a great plot-twisty book. Really anything by Sarah Winters usually has a very cool twists in them :)
I've read The Fingersmith because of your comment! And as I'm a Victorian period obsessed girl, I've been really really thrilled throughout 💜 Thank you!
It's been said before but Harrow the Ninth has the best plot twist I've ever read
Ughhh just finished Gideon the Ninth a couple weeks ago- loved it and then it tore my heart out. I’m so excited and legit scared for Harrow the Ninth and another heartbreak!
It’s amazing how a minor zoom in at the right moment amps up the comedy so much 😂
Bloom was an interesting book. Definitely go in knowing as little as possible.
You’re reading The Final Empire?!?! Omg. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
you need a big TBR cauldron at this point 😂
Omg. Mistborn?! Hell yeah!!
I gasped out loud! Love it for Kayla 🤩
So excited for all the vlogs this spring!
Love that goal related video idea!!
Also for everyone not yet a member: it's so worth it!!! If you are able to, would totally do it!
seconding this 🎉 love our reading sprints and hanging out to watch movies!!
Im excited for literally every book you mentioned!!! This is going to be one hell of a season🌼🌷
Im also currently reading The Final Empire & enjoying it A LOT!

kayla your hair always looks so good
I'm so so so excited for the picks! Two of them are my favorites!
Oh my gosh, I just reread Mistborn and while I love it I am so interested in whether this ends up being a Kayla book or not 😂
I am SO excited to see you read The Final Empire! I read it for the first time just last year (my brother has been pestering me about reading it) and really enjoyed it! I'm now currently on the last one of the original trilogy and the books have just gotten progressively better.

i'm glad you held up bloom because that's what I would have recommended for a plot twist book! not even sure if you can call it a plot twist but I simply did gasp many times during that last chapter.
A book I think pulls off a great twist is Affinity by Sarah Waters
My favourite book ever! 😊
In love with the cover of A Botanical Daughter!
The Drift is an absolute favorite of mine. Really hope you love it.
Ella Minnow Pea is so silly and creative!
Also, I think I spy Maame on your TBR shelf. I just read that one over the weekend and I think you will appreciate it. Interesting story and some good representation I don't see often in books, so I enjoyed it.
Omg so excited for you to start Mistborn!!!🥳
Mistborn! I'm interested to hear your thoughts on that since it seems very different from your usual books. I loved it though.
I love your videos Lala and I always get new recommendations from you.
I hope you enjoy The Final Empire! I just spent nearly $400 on the leatherbounds for the first trilogy so you could say I’m a fan!
Omg I'm totally looking forward to the Sandy vlog!
I read The Final Empire last year and loved it. It was a 5 star read for me. Brandon Sanderson crafts a world and magic system that is very well thought out and very interesting. I hope you enjoy it.
a dangerous collaboration!!!!!! i passed out
Not a mystery or thriller, but Fingersmith by Sarah Waters for the best plot twist. I genuinely think it's the best book I've ever read.
I was going to say Fingersmith too. I love the movie version as well (called “the handmaiden”)
Yes! I came here to recommend Fingersmith! If I could read one book for the first time again, this would be it. (Also, The Handmaiden is a superb adaptation!)
This is what I put in the tbr jar! One of my favorite books of all time.
@@joyface Sarah Waters is my favourite author, she is a wonderful storyteller.
Oh The Drift was fun!
I am so excited for The Last Murder at the End of the World to come out soon I already have the audiobook on hold from the library
Highly recommend the Graphic Audio for The Final Empire! It's what helped me and a friend get through it when, even as Sanderson lovers, it was daunting :)
I need to re-up my membership, definitely missing it! I had such high hopes for The Night of the Storm and it did not work for me
Looking forward to your thoughts on Blackouts! I wouldn't have it down as a Kayla book but fingers crossed it's one you enjoy 🤞
I just read Bloom! I really enjoyed it, wish it was longer tho. I wanted to spend more time post twist, take the time to draw out the final act and go in on the horror. I gave it a 4.25!
Omg I can’t wait to see how these go!!
Excited to see your thoughts on Brandy Sandy! - The last I would have chosen for you but so excited to see your thoughts
oh those were some solid tbr jar picks, so excited to see your reactions!!
I second Harrow the Ninth as a twisty book, I loved trying to figure out what was going on.
For twisty excellence, my first thought is The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemison.
The Twyford Code by Janice Hallett has one of my all-time favourite plot twists. I both did and didn't see it coming (you have to read it to get it). It was great.
I read final empire last year! I totally didn't think i would love it, but it is amazing!!! Lives up to the hype!!!!
I loved Icarus so much I hope you love it too Kayla 😊
Ella Minnow Pea is so good!

Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough!
If you haven't seen the show that is. The twist in the book is BONKERS TO THE WTF MAX
Ah! A Dangerous Collaboration is my fave of the series. I hope you love it! & BUTCHER AND BLACKBIRD! Omg I loooooved that, I can't wait to hear your thoughts.
I’m looking forward to you reading Nightwatching, it was a surprise 5⭐️ for me but I can see it being divisive, I loved it though!
THE BINDINGGGGG
For twists (this is in the sci-if/fantasy): The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell (check triggers)
The Appeal by Janice Hallett has a fairly good plot twist. Also Murder in the Family by Cara Hunter has countless twists and turns. Both books are mixed media which is fun
I think her second and third books have even better plot twists!
Murder in the Family would be a really good Book Club pick too. I read it with another channel (Allison on a Book Break) as her stop and start buddy read and it made for a fun discussion book.
I loved Ella Minnow Pea!!!!! (And final empire but I love Brando sando books a lot)
Kayla keeping us in suspense for the next Literally Dead Book Club selections! 😱
One of the best plot twists I’ve ever read and an amazing weird book that I think you’d love THE BOOK OF M
I always love to hear your plans for future content. One of my favorite simple things you do.
I love Ella Minnow Pea! I even went to see the play. I hope you enjoy ❤
Oooh I can participate in a book club pick! I literally just finished Nightwatching, good pick the first 1/3 was genuinely really tense!
you're going to hate the Lisa Jewell book because you have taste.
Sorry…WENT after. And can’t remember THE AGES
last murder at the end of the world was a great limited series! i'll be interested to see if you like the book! i would say it is twisty.
I think I recommended to you before but I’m going to do it again- Swashbucklers by Dan Hanks!! The ending twist was WILD.
Loved ella minnow pea!!!!
I am so excited for Horror Movie that I can’t even contain it. Dying for more Pallbearer Club vibes
Omg Blackouts too
Cackling at “can I cut and pull another one?”💀😂
Mistborn book 1!!! I am SO EXCITED!
Murder on the Orient Express has my favorite plot twist.
Ohhh TBR Jar coming through with the recs! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on all of those!
Twyford Code and Murder of Roger Ackroyd for mystery, red rising (the whole trilogy has so many twists through out), and gild series for romantasy (which I don’t think is your genre lol)
I highly recommend What Strange Paradise by Omar El Akkad for a book with a memorable ending. One of my favorites!
Next of Kin by Kia Abdullah was my favourite book of last year and has multiple amazing twists!
One of the Good Guys by Araminta Hall (from Gillian Flynn's publishing imprint) had an interesting premise/twist, but I think expecting and anticipating plot twists can take away from the experience a little bit.
it's always a good day when lala posts a new video c:
Me too "a pit of despair"
The 1 stars on Bloom hurt me. It is my favorite book so far this year. I love the ending.

The drift by C. J Tudor has s great twist.
Did I scrub straight to the TBR jar section before going back to the beginning??? Yes, I did. No shame 😅 Did my jaw drop on the third pick? Also, yes! I hope you enjoy it! I’m a big fan!
My jaw dropped for the third pick too!!!
I just finished Ella Minnow Pea and it was so fun!
