I really love videos where people read books that haven't taken off. Makes them so much more interesting because we're seeing books we haven't seen people read.
There was a real Irish kids TV show in the 80s called bosco about a puppet in a box. It also had a feature where they went through a magic door but first they knocked and recited a poem that started with the line “knock knock open wide see what’s on the other side”. From your description sounds like it’s a clear reference to that.
So happy you enjoyed Knock Knock, Open Wide! I read it last year (for your buzzword challenge in December) and it ended up being one of my favorite books of the year! I’m a bookseller and I immediately had to write up a recommendation because it definitely hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves
You're EXACTLY the reason I ran out and bought Knock Knock, Open Wide.... I'm halfway through, and loving it so far. Granted, I'm confused.... But thoroughly entertained. ✌🏻
I'm so behind on this because I wanted to wait until I finished Knock Knock and I thiiiiink it's my favorite of the year so far! I was checking out his Instagram and according to that it's not a debut (the first one is called When the Sparrow Falls from 2021 but I don't think was done with Nightfire) and this didn't get an audiobook because nobody got the audio for his first one. Hoping this one gets one eventually because I would also love to do a reread with it, and that his next one coming out in 2025 gets one with the book release!
Great timing. I have a bulged disc and crazy nerve pain. Today I've been in so much pain I can barely function. You've become my new comfort RUclipsr. Thank you for the chill happy vibes.
I remember being so intrigued by Knock Knock Open Wide when you first talked about as it sounds like the author took inspiration from an Irish TV show called Bosco (which he confirmed) but I can't seem to get the book anywhere here. It's even unavailable on Amazon 😢
when you were describing the plot of House Woman it reminded be strangely of the Queen Charlottle Bridgerton story/show!! i know a weird comparison but equal themes of forced marriage, he has blackouts and strange episodes and his mother is obsessed with getting an heir..
I read Knock Knock, Open Wide last year and absolutely enjoyed it. I rated it 4 stars but think that, on a re-read, I could easily bump it up to a 5. I just need to re-experience it to fully grasp the whole experience. Relating it to T.Kingfisher makes sense because I really enjoy her horror vibes.
I just read knock knock, open wide earlier this month. I never read things before you! So cool to see your reactions when I know what’s happening in the book
I saw my library had a copy of Knock Knock Wide Open so I raced down there to check it out. With St Patrick's Day around the corner...this sounds like a good book to read (and I'm part Irish as well )
This makes me recommend (yet again) A Good Year by Polis Loizou! Very short horror novella rooted in folklore and superstition, please check it out… oh! And there’s a hand on the cover! Haha
I’ve been looking forward to this video idea, I hope you make it into an annual thing🥹 I will absolutely be taking Knock, Knock Open Wide as a rec😂 As an Irish person, we have so much folklore & scary stories but not a lot of horror books are based here! So happy you loved it & also finally got to read House Woman!
I love how I usually don't like the same books as you, and I still watch every video religiously because I love your way of speaking and your personality.
There’s a book I LOVE that has under 2,000 ratings on Goodreads, it’s called The Aunt Who Wouldn’t Die by Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay and I found it at a random dollar tree and it’s honestly one of my favorite books and I wish more people read and loved it as much as I do! ✨💕
Like many of the other commenters, I love these type of videos, because I get to know about books that probably wouldn't have been on my radar otherwise. Especially when it's things that are niche, or just hard to classify, because these often need an extra push to find their audience.
Heyyyy!!! I’m so excited for these books… if you’re taking suggestions, please check out “Bad Kids” by Zijin Chen or “Glory Be” by Danielle Arceneaux..
I LOVED Knock Knock Open Wide, and it's just so wild and wonderful that a) learned about it from one of your hauls and b) actually read it because you got me to try weird books last year!!!! I discovered I loved them too, and I never expected that to happen! Thanks for expanding my reading tastes Kayla!
When your wondering when Kayla is gonna post another video and BOOM, 1 shows up in your feed. For romance books w/ wedding planning as a backdrop you should read Forget Me Not by Julie Soto. And if you want another Gothic mystery book w/ sisters plz read Lighthouse Witches by C.J. Cooke. I need more people to read it!!
Knock Knock, Open Wide was flipping weird and the writing was fantastic and I loved it! I'm so happy you did too, it needs more praise. It's not a debut, the author's first book was a sci-fi/dystopian novel called When the Sparrow Falls, nothing like this one. I do really hope this gets an audiobook, I will definitely be reading it again!
I’m sooo happy you loved Knock, Knock, Open Wide! I read and loved it last year but haven’t heard any mentions of it and it was just such a great reading experience 🥰

I'm commenting before I watch because I saw 'Secrets to a southern wedding & it was a pleasant experience for me but i also enjoy Synithia Williams' simplicity & cozy writing. Was very excited to see it. Now off to watch
I was introduced to her by her book Forbidden Promises but I think I enjoyed her newer one Summoning Love more (paranormal investigator love interest & I love paranormal shows so that may be why). Heads up I never give her more than a 4 star but I'm never looking for stellar book from her or steamy scenes just cozy romance. But if you're looking for a dope Black author that can write small towns/neighborhoods and good everything/romance, I will always recommend Christina C. Jones. She has a large catalogue so there's something for everyone. But good luck in giving Synithia another try!
Not sure if this is possible…. But if you’ve read two recommendations by the same RUclips commenter, you should do a 3rd Times a Charm video where you read another recommendation from them to see if they are a Favorite Recommender
Hi Kayla!! Please read How the Word is Passed by Clint Smith!! Also heads up that Hanif’s new book comes out soon. It’s about basketball and I don’t care at ALLL about sports but I’ve already preordered and bought tickets to his book tour 🎉
I really liked Knock, Knock Open Wide when it came out! I definitely had a few critiques but it sat well with me, and it had some genuinely creepy moments. I'm glad you enjoyed it 😁
I’ve had this on my shelf for a few weeks and still plan to read it. I’m glad you pointed out the rating and the other points of how or why the ratings are the way they are. I would like to see you cover ratings and trends and theorize the why’s.
My type of book (as an Irish person who never reads enough from Ireland) is “set in Ireland” so I wouldn’t mind what you rated knock knock open wide, I just know I’m gonna give it a read
Your review of Knock Knock Open Wide made me think of Mister Magic which I read earlier this year and actually really loved 😊 I will have to check it out
I have a video idea for you! I am doing a reading challenge at my library this year and I'm supposed to read from multiple genres, such as romance, fantasy, dystopian fiction, etc. The issue is I am literally ONLY a thriller reader. I haven't picked up a different genre in many years and I am just SO certain I won't enjoy anything else. I would love to hear your recommendations for "If you are a thriller reader looking to branch out, try 'these' romance books, and 'these' fantasy books", etc. Maybe a romance with a twist? 🤣🤣
For Fantasy, maybe try Harry Dresden by Jim Butcher. The first one of the series works as a standalone. It’s more mystery then thriller but the main character is a magician/detective in Chicago.
Do you have plans to read Peachy anytime soon? I was surprised it only has 175 ratings on goodreads!! I added it to my TBR because of you awhile ago and I just finished it and had a lot of fun. I’ve also been dying to read Knock Knock Open Wide since you first mentioned it, the synopsis sounded so intriguing. Glad to hear u loved it!!! I’m even more excited to get my hands on it now 😊
I also read Knock Knock, Open Wide and I also proudly gave it a 5 star like it was perfect TO ME, but I know it's a very specific audience of readers who would like it. I would say it's a better version of Mister Magic which I read and gave a 3 star.
Happy to hear someone talk about The Insatiable Volt Sisters, it’s on my tbr and I had no idea what to expect with it! 😅 House Woman sounds…interesting. Thank you! My local library has a reading challenge category "a book with less than 1000 ratings on goodreads" so this was super helpful!
That is so cool, love the idea of a library having a reading challenge!

I am exactly halfway into Knock Knock Open Wide, and honestly, totally agree with 5 stars right now. Right up my alley, though.
I would love this to be a regular video! Its quite literally underrated books
