    Maleficent 2 movie commentary reaction
Maleficent 2 is a great idea for a movie commentary and reaction, filled with great imagery and big ideas. Sadly, it doesn't really have enough time to fully explore those ideas, as some story elements are barely touched on and things progress very quickly. That said, this is still a fun movie and we enjoyed doing it. It'll be interesting to see what they do with the next one!

One detail I really appreciated about these movies is Maleficent's magic is normally sparkly gold, her magic is only green when she's casting out of anger. I think it's a really nice way to highlight she's not evil she's just capable of doing bad things.

I just don't understand why in the dinner scene Aurora didn't speak up more in Maleficent's defense. Literally Philip said more to try to counter what his mother was saying than her own adopted daughter did.

    • @miserableghost6385
      @miserableghost6385 2 года назад +122

I feel like they tried to make her seem like she rlly wanted Phillip's parents, specifically the mom's, approval. She seemed like she didn't want take either side or else she'd get on the queen's bad side. Like Philip can go against his mom because that's his mom, they are connected by blood while Aurora is only connected to her through Philip and if she says something the queen won't like her and she won't allow her and Philip to marry (her thought process, obv the queen would allow it anyway so her plan could continue). That's what I got from it because she seemed genuinely nervous about the dinner.

@@miserableghost6385 I get that's what they were trying to go for but it fails on 2 levels- one, Aurora could have just deflected instead of outright contradicting the queen (such as just changing the subject completely, which I believe Philip does at one point) and 2) some things NEED to be countered no matter the cost (especially those last lines from the queen about Maleficent doing the best should could to raise Aurora despite her own nature and about Aurora only now having a real family... no matter how much Aurora wanted the queen to like her, when someone metaphorically spits in the face of the woman who raised you, you NEED to speak up)

I said it once, I'll say it again: this movie would have been better as a show.
There are extremly interesting story beats in here, and interesting world building. But the limiting run time shoots it in the legs.
They introduce so many interesting characters, especially the three dark Fai. (The snowl owl one even had he reocuring theme with taking care of children, which later lead into him saving those human children.) But we barely get the time to spend time with them, to the point where I can't rember their names for the live of me! That's just wasted potential!
This story would have done so well as a mini series to explore all the things introduced!

    A few things.
First, I think Phillip is one if my favorite live action princes because a) they dated for five years before they got engaged, b) is respectful towards Malificient and Aurora and wants what is best for them, c) loves his parents which explains why he is blindsided because they were the people that raised him, and d) fought for them in the end.
Second: i respect how dark they went with the story to show how far hate can go. But the massacre scene was really hard to watch. The pink dust just obliterating dozens of the fae in one shot gave me fictional PTSD. I can’t imagine. I was also freaked out by the lieutenant looking like she was having an orgasm when playing the death organ. Every kill was orgasmic to her. That creeped me out. And of course, them stealing the fae’s dead bothered me and everyone.
Third, I loved how they were able to create one huge biodome with a bunch of ecosystems. It was fun seeing many environments and aesthetics that each fairy had. My favorite are the tropical ones because their wings were vivid and vibrant and bright.

The dinner scene with the cat always makes me kinda feel wholesome. I think it gives an idea of how important Diaval is for both Mal and Aurora. They could've left him as surveillance but no, Aurora invited him to go to dinner with e/o's guardians bc she recognizes that he played a big role in her childhood and well-being, Mal took his suggestions without remarks bc she trusts him enough that she knew he won't make a fool out of her. And with that cat scene, Mal showed how she won't just sit there while Diaval is constantly annoyed by a cat, she _will_ fuck you up even if it's just your pet that fucks with him.
(Not even adding the fact that they were served birds, with Mal's wings out in the open and Diaval being a literal bird, even if they didn't know that part. You're telling me they didn't have any beef?? Pork?? Also, I _do_ think she knew about Diaval being a bird, they let a cat in, which will feed on birds if they can, and the bird meat, again.)

maleficent is aurora's mother, and diaval is, essentially, her father. he fed her and played with her, even when maleficent didn't know. which is why he fills the father role at the dinner, which is why it makes me mad that aurora didn't say shit when they were blatantly being provoked. those are her parents! she should have opened her mouth.

I think the reason they could still use the curse in this one is because the curse wasn’t broken in the sense that it would never happen again it’s just that the curse was “fulfilled” like the terms were met: 16th birthday, prick finger, sleep like death, kiss wakes her up. And the reason that they give for her “not doing it before” (it being breaking the curse) I think is that she now has the power of the phoenix in her so she can once and for all break the curse. Remember the “no power on earth can change it” part of the curse phrasing? The power to break it wasn’t technically able to be on earth yet, it had to be transferred/realized in her!! Like I know it’s convoluted but that’s just what makes this movie so cool if you look deep enough

    Great commentary!
Here are my thoughts: the visual aesthetics of this movie are way better than the first and feel more in line with the world created by Eyvind Earle for Sleeping Beauty (my favorite of the Disney animated classics). I really appreciate the way the plot challenges the relationship between Maleficent and Aurora, and how it also focuses on the love between Aurora and Philip this time around. The building rivalry between the fairy and human worlds is gripping and suspenseful and the battle doesn't sugarcoat the devastating costs of war, which was something that both surprised and impressed me for a Disney movie. However, my 2 big complaints are that Michelle Pfeiffer really "phoned it in" as Queen Ingrith and Aurora and Phillip's wedding shouldn't have been held immediately after the big fight. Overall I liked the movie better than the first one, though.

Thank the gods I'm not the only one who made a joke about Sonic the hedgehog when that little spiky guy started playing with her golden ring crown. I was just giggling in the theatre.
"His only job is to stand here and look pretty - and he's *failing* at it" I mean... you're not wrong. His only function in the story is being on hand in case they need to use his fivehead for a powerpoint presentation.
I still ship Maleficent & Diaval; I can't help it. I was side eyeing Ed Skrein, just going, "step off, Francis. She's taken."

For me the problem of "tolerance" is that it is never understood. "Acceptance" is more like I am cool with everything and I invite you in, and that's amazing, but with tolerance is like I can be against something that you do or not agree with you in something, but I'm cool with you anyway and I just let you be and that's fucking beautiful.

I was waiting for this ❤️ not ashamed to admit that I cried with this one even with the whole phoenix thing foreshadowing everything 😂
Not as iconic as the first one, but still it's one of my favourite sequels nonetheless.

i like how this movie subverts the parental stereotype of the mother being happy about their daughter getting married, while the father doesn't want to let her go. in this case, it's diaval who's excited and maleficent who disapproves. it also makes me mad how aurora didn't even defend them against ingrith's blatant disrespect. about the bird food comment (besides the accidental innuendo), i saw a theory that says one time maleficent caught diaval eating a bird (since birds definitely don't have a cannibalism taboo) and she was horrified, so the comment is like an inside joke that becomes even funnier by the end of the movie due to what maleficent's true form is.

I completely agree that this sequel packed too much story into it, which made some things not really get developed enough or get the focus it deserved. That was my main issue with this one.

I really would love a movie just going into the history of Maleficent’s kin the fae. Also about her ancestor the original dark fae. That was the most interesting part of this movie and that’s the only reason I rewatch it.

I don’t mind that there was two different stories, I still feel like they all correlate. Both have the same conflict at the end of the day, human vs fairies.
