People in these comments have no idea how much money it takes to go that deep in small submarines to pick up that gold. It literally cost millions of dollars just to bring up those millions. So he had investors sponsor him and pay for everything to get that treasure. But he screwed them out of money he owed them. That’s not cool at all. He wouldn’t have got that money if it wasn’t for them to begin with. So he can’t keep his mouth shut he needed to bring it up. Problem is the transactions he made selling it were documented and the investors found out. So now he owes millions to them.

The math doesn’t math. Even if it was several years ago. 1 ton of gold is worth $52 million. According to what you said, he only took 3 tons. There’s still 18 tons out of a total 21 tons still down there. Today’s value of 3 tons would be $156 million. Where did the hundred million dollars go? Kind of shooting some holes in this scenario. Common sense holes to book. Please explain. One thing I don’t understand was you said he was only on the run for three years? What happened to the other 24 years between 1988 and 2015?
He defrauded his investors. The investors risked lots of money with the premise that when the treasure was found he would have to pay back the initial money borrowed and a certain percentage of the recovered treasures value. When he found the treasure he hid the treasure from his investors and only repaid what he borrowed. He is in jail because he refuses to follow court orders and disclose the actual treasure found in order to pay his investors what he owes.
Pay the people that is only right and get your freedom to enjoy what you wish for or to do. It'd material just sitting there and not being used. While your life has stopped in jail. You could go back to get more with what you have. Think about it as you get old.😢😢😮😢😢😢😢
Greed sent him to prison. If not for those investors who provided him the funds to be able to find those treasures, he and his family wouldn't have lived a wealthy lifestyle. They deserve their fair shares of the treasures..
@danor6812 this is written wrong. It wasn't his investors. It was the irs, and they wanted him to pay taxes and tell the government where the wreck was as "proof" it wasn't from something illegal.

😅 It was meant as a joke!
@@peggyward shit... Sorry. 😆
This is why I'd just give the money away or hide it... People greedy as hell 😂
Gold and US financial policies don't mix. They didn't remove the gold standard for no reason. You simply have no right to monopoly any amount of gold even if it's your finding.
2020 When asked if he'd help in any way, he said, "No!"
"Your honor, I don’t know if we’ve gone over this road before or not, but I don’t know the whereabouts of the gold,” Thompson responded. “I feel like I don’t have the keys to my freedom.”
It's STILL a civil matter and you can't be jailed for a civil matter.
@@2dronetek2no it's called FRAUD. IT'S ABSOLUTELY a criminal act. And a civil matter now too.
@@2dronetek2believe it becomes fraud at that point, which makes it criminal
If there are still 18 tons on board , and the investors know where it is, ie long and lat, what's the problem, he got his, let em go get there own! But, even at that, all he had to cough up was a measly 500 coins, and then reniged, idk but something doesn't smell right, !!!
I dont see the gov't getting their ass put there and doing all that work to find the gold.
Why is almost everyone crying _"The government wants it! The government wants it!"_ (yes this is to be said in a whiney and demanding tone) SHUT UP!
It _WASN'T_ the government going after him, it was the _PARTNERS_ that provided the equipment to FIND IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. He stiffed them out of their share and ran. He would have still had plenty of money left over if he'd just paid them for their help then moved on with his life, no jail time needed sheesh.
So 18 tones of gold are still in the boat that they should forget about the 500 coins and get the rest
Ship of Gold is the book about the discovery. The investors all signed a non-disclosure agreement, the violation of which I believe nearly every one of the investors did. Tommy has now been released. Great story.
When did he get freed??🤔
He got released !?!?!
@@candrakane4642 zi had seen s YT report on his incarceration and possible release date over a year ago. Having just now reading a Columbus Ohio(?) newspaper account it now appears Thompson is still incarcerated for his refusal to tell the location of some 500 gold coins. I assumed wrongly that he had been released, shades of J6 judicial weaponization.
Theres somthing wrong here. Thompson is probably not telling them where its at. Thats probably his only sin.

No he supposed to pay tax but, refused & lied about how much he sold and, how much gold he recovered
Nothing but pure unnecessary stupid greed. May the Lord have mercy on him.
Why would you want to rip off your investors? It's a team effort, and funner to enjoy the spoils together. And instead of conniving to rip off your business partners, I would have applied myself to figuring how to raise the rest of that there gold. Greed isn't worth jail.
Greed will always bring your downfall.
You find treasure just keep your mouth shut and only take what you need
I mean with all the treasure he found. He could’ve easily payed them with the gold coins and probably didn’t make a dent on how much he found. But yet again idk much about finances and such so I’m at a lost to why he didn’t just pay the cut besides the fact that greed got to him
Bro just found the one piece
It's a great guy. Telling the judge to go f himself didn't help any either
Greed is apparently stronger than common sense...
If you find treasure, the last thing you think about is handing it over to the government
@@MarkerEraserThe government wasn’t asking him to give up the wreck. They were telling him “Hey, you know it’s illegal to defraud your investors, right?”
@@nothere2994nope
From what I have seen
It's the IRS that's behind him
The Gov. Wants to know the location where he found it so that they can keep the whole thing for themselves
Basically, it sounds like the investors wanted more than he wanted to give them, so he didn't. Legal documents exist for a reason. He should've had an agreement by an attorney drawn up. Instead, he wanted it all for himself. Kinda selfish, but i dont blame the dude when he is the one who found it. Possession is 9/10 of the law, but when it comes to millions, the government steps in and decides its theirs regardless. Wacky corrupt world we live in.
Perfectly said 👏 😊
The only biggest treasure of America is mount of gold in Papua Indonesia
Real Hero he knows something that he dont what the Powers within to have ! Free Him !!!!
It'd be super nice to find such wealth.
FREE THE HOMIE Tom
Finders keepers 😂
He defrauded his investors. The investors risked lots of money with the premise that when the treasure was found he would have to pay back the initial money borrowed and a certain percentage of the recovered treasures value. When he found the treasure he hid the treasure from his investors and only repaid what he borrowed. He is in jail because he refuses to follow court orders and disclose the actual treasure found in order to pay his investors what he owes.
Wall Street does it daily.
Pay the people that is only right and get your freedom to enjoy what you wish for or to do. It'd material just sitting there and not being used. While your life has stopped in jail. You could go back to get more with what you have. Think about it as you get old.😢😢😮😢😢😢😢
He would if he could you idiots think he wants to sit in jail over 2% of his findings you guys that brain dead?
Investors are Capitalist Pigs hungry to hog in the wealth away from the people
That man was trying to stay alive.
Greed sent him to prison. If not for those investors who provided him the funds to be able to find those treasures, he and his family wouldn't have lived a wealthy lifestyle. They deserve their fair shares of the treasures..
The love of money is the root of all evil 😈
It sure is the root of all evil
Hey risked his life going down to get that
And his investors risked all their money to fund his search for the gold.
So what!!it doesn’t mean you become a scumbag especially to investors that made it possible for it to happen
@danor6812 this is written wrong. It wasn't his investors. It was the irs, and they wanted him to pay taxes and tell the government where the wreck was as "proof" it wasn't from something illegal.
@@zachheflin3601and u just wrong. It was investors that sued him
How exactly did he risk his life? And what do you mean going down for it? You do realize that he was on a ship using robots to recover all that stuff from over 7000 feet below the ocean surface. Nobody risk their lives.
AU Uncle Ben: “With great treasure comes a great curse”
