This is the BEST tutorial for the underarms I have seen on YT. I’ve tried others where two stitches are picked up on each side then twisted and knitted together and it still left me with holes. This is so simple, easily explained and straight forward, and I didn’t even have to weave in the back it worked 100% for me so thank you very much!
Natasha Childers do you have an easy tutorial for changing yarn in the middle of a row and weaving in the ends? I ask because the garment you’ve knitted has fairisle and although I’ve never attempted fairisle I’m interested in learning how to change the yarn while weaving in the ends. My problem is changing the yarn in the round.
@@cloudydaez I haven't done a tutorial on this but I am happy to do one. It is probably simpler than you might be expecting. I usually just change the yarn on the side of the garment and weave in the ends on the wrong side in a way that they are unlikely to show or to pop out. I will definitely do a video for clarity. Thank you for the suggestion. :)
Natasha Childers thank you. I normally tie the strands and weave in after the project is finished but recently I followed a tutorial weaving the strands in the round going in opposite directions but every time I come back to the next round to weave in that last strand 6 -7 stitches before where the yarns have been joined I’m left with an ugly stitch on the front of the work and I can’t for the life of me see what I’m doing wrong. I would be so grateful 😊
something about the way you speak, its just soooooooo nice, succinct and calming and you explain things just so brilliantly. thank you for this amazing video!!
Well done! Great clear instruction and camera work. Your calm, encouraging voice is so nice. As a lifelong knitter/weaver, I always appreciate a good teacher. I’ve subscribed. Blessings!🎉
Oh, my goodness, thank you so very much! I made my first baby sweater, religiously following the instructions, and lo and behold, there were big gaps under the arms. I watched several tutorials afterwards explaining how to prevent that, but none of them were as clear or as helpful as yours. Thank you so much! You’ve given me a lot more confidence.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Best video on how to not only pick up stitches but it’s exactly what I was working on! Adding on the sleeve to a top down sweater! Excellent instructions on everything I need to know! Thanks again!
Thank you so much. I am knitting my first sweater in the round and the pattern's instructions left me asking questions which you have answered so clearly. Many thanks again
I am so glad I have found you on RUclips. Not only you have taught me how to pick up stitches on the sleeves with no gaps, you have introduced me to knit the Musselburgh beanie and the Oslo hat. I am going to have so much fun knitting them for my grandkids. I will be visiting them in September and will try to visit the Skein Sisters in Sydney and hope to meet you there. I enjoy watching your blogs. Time just flew by. Thank you for spending your time to help us improve our knitting skills. From a very happy Kiwi. Thanks Tash.
I think you are the first person I have watched who actually shows the weaving in ends. Thank you so much for a great video. I am almost ready to do sleeves in my project so I will definitely be using your techniques. ❤️
I don't know what video I used to do my first sleeve last winter but I'm now working on the second sleeve and this video is so clear and easy to understand. Thank you! PS. Love the suggestion to pick up in the middle. It makes sense. The first time I did it from one side and I realized how awkward it was.
You saved me. My pattern said to start in the middle. The videos I found started on the side. I could have done it that way but I like to learn the correct way first. Your instructions were so clear & mine looks pretty good. Thanks.
Thank you for this video! I'm knitting my first sweater and am about to start on the sleeves. The written directions were a total mystery, but watching you really helped me. I'm going to ditch the written instructions and follow this video.
Thank you so much for your tutorial. It’s clearly demonstrated with good camera focus on what you are doing. A very useful technique to close up gaps for arms in sweaters and heels in socks. Great video!
BEST tutorial, exactly what I needed. Thx so much! I decided to pick up a few extra stitches instead of just 2, and then decreased it later. Thanks for showing how to do this! First sweater, and got to this part. :)
@@mostlyknitting Thx! well, we'll see about the 'great work' when my sweater's done 😜, but hey, at least it'll have damn good closed armpits haha. Just subscribed to say thank you! 🫂
I am so happy to have come across your video..wow! Thank you for your very clear instructions. It has always been a challenge for me where to pick up the stitches under the arm! The best tutorial I’ve seen on this task!😊😊😊❤
Thanks for the detailed instructions. I have watched many videos on picking up sleeve stitches and got a general understanding, but your video clarified some things I never thought about such as identifying the backwards loop stitches. Your choice of yarn color also made it easier to see what you were doing. Thank you!
I am knitting a top/down sweater for the very first time on circular needles. I’m not using a pattern and that part was a mystery till now :-) Your explanations are very clear and useful. Thank you very much. Lovely piece you are knitting, the colors are exquisite.
I wish I saw the video already with my 1st sweater. This is definitely the BEST VIDEO of fixing holes at underarm!! I tried it with my 2nd sweater and with only very mini holes on it. Thank you!!
thank you so much for the tutorials. I spent 2 days searching around and finally came upon yours and it really helps me alot. thank you for your time and effort in sharing.
Wow! Thank you so much! I was struggling with written directions for this and just couldn't get it. I appreciate your visual step by step tutorial. Now I can make all my sleeves flat on my sweaters and cardigans. So happy! Thank you again.
Thank you, that was very clear and does a much better job than any other tutorials I have followed. I was interested that you expect to have to weave in and tighten the gaps. Whenever I’ve done that I’d thought I’d failed in my initial job of eliminating them as I picked up. It was so nice to see that this is a conscious decision with the benefit of strengthening the gusset.
It’s so good to see you hold your knitting needle the way my mum taught me. So many people knit holding their needles like they are crocheting it looks so awkward to me. Your tutorial is the only one I’ve found easy to understand and to do. Thank you. Btw great idea with the two strands it looks beautifully soft.
So refreshing to hear a fellow Australian accent on a knitting video! I always worried my 'free-form' approach to weaving in ends was 'wrong', so it's very reassuring to see how you do it, it makes sense to have an intuitive attitude. I love the neat result of the seam, so I'm going to follow your suggestions.
Thanks! It is definitely one of those areas in knitting where you have to have a go and see if you like the result. There is no exact one "right" way. Happy knitting. :)
This is truly the best video in YT on how to knit sleeves. The explanation was very clear. I’m working on my first sweater (top-down) and I’ve been freaking out about the sleeves but now I feel confident I can do them after watching your video 😊. Thanks so much and new subscriber 🧡
Excellent tutorial!!! Thank you so much. I'm knitting my first top down sweater and the instructions are very unclear for this part . Glad I found your tutorial. Your sweater is gorgeous!
I'm so glad you found it helpful. I hope you enjoy your first top-down sweater - it is so nice to be able to try it on as you go and make sure you are happy with the fit and the length.
excellent video, going to follow it step by step on sweater today as picking up sleeve stitches! Would love it if you would you do a video on using the magic loop please? thank you so much
Thank you so much for your very kind comment. You can usually sort out any irregularities when you come to weave in the ends, so I am sure the first one will look better after you have done that. And even if it is not as perfect as you would like, it is in the armpit area so not in too obvious a place. :)
Thank you, Natasha Childers, for this excellent tutorial for picking up the sleeve stitches. It made all the difference for me as I am knitting my first top down sweater. I will definitely look to see if you have more videos.!!
Great tutorial, thank you for sharing, it is so useful! ✨ very clear and easy to follow even for a total beginner like me 🤩 it’s a beautiful jumper too! 😊
Great Video! I have put this on my favorites! I get very confused with magic loop, but you have explained it so well! Thanks! Can't wait to see your other videos! Very excited! :)
Thank you SO much for this tutorial, it is very helpful! I tried a different technique that was unnecessarily complicated and I still ended up with holes at either end. I’m going to do it this way from now on.
Ugh, THANK YOU. I'm knitting my first sweater, and I had so many questions about the arms. Am I picking up these stitches correctly? Kinda. Why is this big hole here? It does that. Did I mess it up? No, it just does that? Can I make it stop? Yes. My second sleeve looks so pretty! My first sleeve, well, let's hope it's not too obvious where I use my tails to close up my armpit holes. Thanks again!
the best!! can you talk more about the second yard, it looks very thin. Can you use the same thick yarn as well instead of a thinner yarn that would be a perfect color match, but not so available.....
Thank you. I am glad you found the tutorial helpful. I am a little unsure what you mean in your question. To make the sweater, I used a sportweight yarn and a laceweight yarn held together. The pattern was written for a DK weight yarn so this allowed me to achieve the right gauge for the sweater as well as gave a bit of a soft halo which is the look i was going for. For me, two of the same sport weight yarn held together would be too think to get a gauge of DK weight but if i held two fingering weight yarns, i would get close to the DK gauge I was after. I hope that answers your question.
Thanks for a great tutorial it made sense finally😊 Is there a way to know what your decreases should be left leaning or right ? I’m still learning and on the sleeve I am still unsure if not following pattern.
Thank you for your kind words. There is a bit of a rule of thumb with decreases. At the start of the round, you usually do K1, K2 tog (right leaning) and then at the end, knit to 3 sts before the end of round and do SSK, K1 - left leaning. Hope that helps. :)
Thanks for such a concise and quietly spoken tutorial! So refreshing. And so timely, am one row off picking up underarm stitches.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I am glad you found the tutorial helpful. :)

I am so glad you found it helpful. Happy knitting. :)
I like how you started picking up in the middle of the cast on underarm stitches. What a great idea.
Thank you! 😊
I agree -and that works well for the popular “flax” jumper pattern which starts the pick up instructions at the centre of the underarm stitches.

Thank you so much. The wool blend is Madelinetosh Pashmina and the lace weight is Katia Concept Silk Mohair. They are both lovely yarns.
