  • Billy Napier: "If you're on the fence, maybe this is not the right place for you" Our Franz Beard asks this question to Billy Napier in the Monday Press Conference
Billy Napier knows what the University of Florida has to offer prospective football players. It’s an experience and opportunity he calls second to none, an opinion obviously shared throughout the sports and academic worlds. Florida consistently finishes among the top five or six in the Director’s Cup standings. Recently the combination of academics and overall student experience earned a number one ranking among the nation’s public institutions.
Amenities such as the Heavener Football Complex add to the appeal of Florida football, but even with all this to offer attrition was, is and will continue to be a fact of life that Napier has to deal with. The NCAA transfer portal in combination with NIL money almost makes this a rent-a-player situation, true here at UF and every Division I school in the country.
A year ago, Florida had 27 players depart through the portal. Napier brought in 13 transfers from the portal to go with a recruiting class of 20 high school kids and two juco transfers. Napier has 20 high school kids already committed for the 2024 recruiting class but this is where matters get a little bit dicey.
With the departure of reserve offensive lineman Jordan Herman (6-8, 375), who announced Sunday that he intends to enter the transfer portal, the Gators have 84 on scholarship. Only a handful of scholarship players will exhaust their eligibility. Simple math tells us the Gators will be way over the NCAA mandated 85-player scholarship limit.
The portal combined with NIL money has turned college football into somewhat of a mirror image of the NFL.
"I think it's much like the National Football League,” Napier said Monday morning. “In my opinion, you're talking about you want to build your team through the draft, and you want to - each off-season you're evaluating the depth on your team, the impact players, the immediate - where do you need immediate presence? And that's the NFL free agent model. I think we're living in a world that's very much the same.
“You throw NIL into that equation, and you're living in a salary cap model. The problem is we have no contracts. Our drafted players have no contracts. I'd like to know that we have them for four or five years. So the instability, I think, is magnified.”
Before there was the transfer portal...
