With the Covid crisis a few years ago...so many small businesses went under and lost everything. I think you made the right decision to not open the physical bookshop at that time. Your parents advice is so spot on...and you now have time to plan for it's potential...in your retirement years. When my kids were young..I worked at a small independent bookshop. The owner and her husband were there 24/7. It's a big commitment. A satisfying one...but big! Keep your dream alive...and keep planning for your future! Thank you for sharing!❤

It’s a huge commitment. One of my besties has said how it’s nearly every woman’s dream to open an independent bookshop, and what I’ve done is share the reality of how hard it is. Maybe one day I will be ready for it ❤️

Awww, thank you for sharing your story... I love how supportive your parents are. And, I think you're mom is right. Just because it didn't happen for you at that time, it doesn't mean it won't happen for you at a later time. I think you would make a great bookshop owner. Your passion for books really shows in your videos. I don't know if you realize this, but your videos really do bring me great joy and influence me to read more. I know I have picked up some books that I wouldn't normally pick up for myself because of your videos.

This was a great video, Michelle, really eye-opening and inspiring. I have also always wanted to own a bookshop, but I didn’t know the first thing about book buying and etc. so I became a books distributor and I love my job enough that it’s distracted me from looking further into owning a bookshop. I know what it’s like to need that stable guaranteed income, and look forward to the retirement days when the commitment of a bookshop is more feasible. ❤
Love your book bar idea! x

This is a cool video. I think this is a cool idea. I know I have always wanted to own a bookstore but I know it’s not financially feasible right now. So I def feel that! That’s why I made my channel. I wanted to be able to share my love of books and how they saved me. I do love the idea of the Bookstore/Bar. I have always love the idea of a Queer bookstore/Coffee shop that would be open later in the day and late at night to be a safe haven for Queer people that need a place to go. Like maybe Noon to 2am type thing. But who knows. Sending you all the hugs! I hope you can accomplish this dream one day. Until then love the Channel will be here supporting you from Oklahoma ❤

i find it most impressive that you tried, put so much thought, effort, and time into the idea. and, like you mentioned, learned a lot along the way.
i don’t believe that most people would just open the bookshop, i rather think that most people will bury the dream as it being only a dream and moving on with the daily stress. i might be wrong. 🤷🏼‍♀️
i really like the positive way you look back on the whole endeavour and are able to appreciate the positive aspects.
your mum sounds great - can i borrow her from time to time? 😂

I think it’s most millennial women’s dream to own a small bookshop that also sells coffee and cake 🥰
But in reality it would still be ‘work’.

Thank you for sharing your story, unfortunately the climate for a ‘shop’ industry is on a steep decline so i think you made the right decision. As you say you never know what the future quite looks like and you may find that setting up a bookshop is the direction you want to go. Either way, i wish you luck in what endeavour you take. Oh Michelle! Loved listening to your story and we are so similar! I've had many years of teaching gigs and it is every layer of “difficult” in this era. Too many responsibilities with too many parents criticizing you for what you are trying your BEST to do with near 30 kids under your solitary lead. I haven’t given up on it, but have taken a break (since pandemic) and not feeling much urge to return. My husband’s side gig has recently delved into property management (which I have been helping with) and a great little shop popped up within our grasp and I was very much interested in the potential, but knew nothing on opening a bookshop, needed the money coming in, and let that "idea"" go to another’s business at present. Do you have any helpful online resources about book businesses you could share (or link in your description) of a few you found extremely helpful in your journey? I’m 40 and dream about opening a children’s/YA bookshop that is community event-based. :). Don't give up on your visions!! I believe in things “feeling right” and doors never completely closing for any one person only to open again later. ❤🩵💛

Hi Kari, teaching is so difficult isn’t it. It sucked every bit of energy and life out of me. I was good at my job, and that was my downfall. I don’t have any specific resources, I read every article that I could find, and watched RUclips videos of other people doing it. I think maybe talking to owners of other independent bookshops would give a good insight too.
What I would say is that kids books sold really well for me, and it wasn’t even my main focus! Parents seem to be willing to buy books for their children (which is great). If you ever go for it I wish you all the best Kari. It really would be amazing business/job, and even though a lot of hard work it would be very rewarding 😊

@@MichelleReadsandVlogs Exactly, the desperate desire to give each student ALL of your time but the system is set up (at least in US) to never allow for it and it's soul-depleting. That has always been my main struggle always. Thanks for the tips! I admire that you just dove in and now have so much knowledge for it! So wonderful that you have a biz-savvy family to help! That's the side of it that scares me haha. Xx

@@Kari-G yes! It’s the exact same. Before I started teacher training I met a retired teacher who said,’if you give this job your all it will kill you’, and he was right.
It seems like you and your partner are pretty business savvy too. It’s definitely something to do a lot of research on and a lot of soul searching on, and I think finding the right place where a shop will be successful. Let me know if you ever decide to open one and I’ll come and be your first customer! ❤️
