I knew a pair of 99.99999999% identical twins in high school in th' 80s,,,they could pass as totally identical if they had baseball caps on though as their only distinguishing feature was that Larry's hair naturally parted on th' left and Gary's hair parted naturally down th' middle. Revealing their true identity required an actual hats off moment.

I'm an identical twin. my sister didn't make it out of the womb, and people ask me "What was it like to absorb her soul", "Do you remember what it felt like when she died?" or "do you feel her rotting" none of those people knew me that well.
I make myself cry on command in front of them and usually proclaim "how dare you say stuff like that" this usually makes them feel guilty enough to either not talk to me again or not say stupid crap anymore.
Sometimes it's crazy what people think it's okay to say when not knowing someone.
what in the actual fck. Good for you for making them even the slightest bit uncomfortable, you're saving people from dealing with that in the future. I have a friend who does something similar whenever people scold her for taking seats on buses that were designated for disabled or old people. She can't walk further back on the bus nor stand for a journey due to injuries sustained in a car crash that also killed her mother when she was in her teens. She doesn't need a stick to walk but she's unsteady on public transport and will just hit the ground if she tries to walk up the bus while it's moving or stand throughout the bumpy journey. I've been enthralled when she's told people, very calmly, that although seemingly young and healthy looking, she's registered disabled with a brain injury and life long injuries from a car hitting her and killing her mother, so it's best not to make assumptions about people by their appearance. I've seen a good few indignant older women turn into a puddle of apologies and she always goes something like "don't care. Your damage has been done. Don't ever do that again, it's really upset me and God knows how many other days you've ruined with the same judgemental assumptions." Delicious.

My dermatologist and veterinarian were identical twins. Wonderful guys. One passed, and the other mentioned that after, no one pauses anymore before saying his name. It underscored his loss.
That has to be such a strange experience. For the first time in your life, no one hesitates or comes off as unsure and you know they are fully aware of who they're talking to. For the first time your presences isn't subconsciously seen by others as some horrible social IQ test they feel they have to pass or else it feels like admitting they're not a decent person. At the same time, the absences of that hesitation acts as a stand in for the absence of his brother. I hope the reminder help bring memories of their time together, rather than to add to his pain.
Growing up in middle school & high school, I had 2 sets of identical twins. At first it was hard to tell 4 of them apart, but when we got to H.S., it was easy. You look for the subtle marks, like 1 has a slight blemish on his face, whereas the other doesn't. But it's understandable for me, since I see all 4 of them 5 days a week for 7 years, whereas you only saw your twins every few months.

Thanks to the writer for addressing the downside of being an identical twin, which is seldom if ever touched upon! So weird to have people come up to you and assume you're the same person, or just get asked by strangers "so which of you is the evil twin?" and "are you guys psychic?" and "oh, one of you is heavier than the other, so I can tell you apart!" My identical twin and I are close now but when college came we were like... we are NEVER applying to the same schools because we were so over it!

Yes Simon, the Dionne quintuplets were identical girls, born just outside Callander, Ontario May 28, 1934 and also have the notoriety of being the first known quintuplets to have survived infancy. All five survived to adulthood. Their story was quite sad with them being taken by the Ontario government and put on display in ‘Quintland’ a tourist attraction.

thats so interesting that you've got an identical and fraternal twin! I noticed with the twins I grew up with (two sets of girls, one set of boys) that the girls who were identical twins were treated as individuals for the most part, whereas the non identical set of girls were often pitted against each other in a really weird way (it was terrible, they looked very alike but not identical so one was referred to as the 'pretty' twin, or the 'thin' twin), and then the boys were left to be total individuals to such an extent that I didn't even know they were twins for a few years (I thought they were just siblings born within a year of each other and so ended up in the same school year). It was very odd. The non identical boys were basically just siblings, were never compared or made to feel like a 'set' so they could have their own lives, but the non identical girls seemed to have a hard time.

Mama Doctor Jones had an episode recently where she said that men could pass on the genes that lead to hyperovulation, which would make the whole “twins run in the family but it skips a generation” make sense because when the men with those genes have kids they won’t be twins but some of their daughters could carry the genes.
Interestingly, I had a singleton friend in high school who said exactly that about twins and skipping a generation and sure enough when I ran into her a few years after graduation she had two sets of almost “Irish twins” which meant she was dealing with four kids under the age of two.

Back in high school, I looked a lot like my older brother. Despite a year difference we looked strikingly similar. When a substitute teacher came in to teach, we would pull the old switcheroo, much to the enjoyment of our classmates. It was simple as switching backpacks, and honestly that got me through high school.
I had a friend who was freakishly identical to me, the only difference being our teeth. (She had buck teeth, I had a tooth gap, otherwise we were considered to be doppelgangers.) In 2nd grade we tried the twin-switcheroo when both of us had substitute teachers. Unfortunately, one of her classmates was a snitch. We didn't get in trouble, but we were warned never to do that again.
When I was still in uni, I jokingly asked my bioanthropology professor what my “hypothetical” chances of having twins would be if every generation of my family (both parents) had twins. She thought about it and said “rough estimate, but I’d say conservatively that your first birth would be at least 60%, with an increased chance if you have more kids”. I then told her that my family did actually have a long history of twins (going back at least as far as my great-great grandparents) and her eyes momentarily bugged out in shock 😳

My grandmother had three sets of fraternal twins, although this was way back in the 1930s so not all survived until adulthood. On my dad's side of the family there are sets of twins peppered throughout the family tree, although all fraternal not identical.
Ya iv got a friend that's 1 of a set and she has other siblings that are twins too. She herself had two sets and her daughter has a set it's crazy how it works.
fraternal twins can run in families, genes that cause multiple eggs to be released. it runs in my family. my dad, grandma, and great grandma are all twins. plus a few sets of twin aunt/uncle/cousins. Ive got twin aunts on my moms side too. Ive got a good chance of having the gene, but i never want to test it out.
The twin gene can be passed down to the women of a family. So many twins on my side of the family. It's a rarity for the women in my family to NOT have at least one set every generation. My husband and I had the first set on his side, at least as far back as we've seen in his family tree. So, ladies, it's a crap shoot if twins run in your family. May the odds be ever in your favor. 😊
Fraternal twins can run in families since it is because the mother releases more than one egg at a time. My grandma had twins in 1927 and I suspected that I might because, I would get mittelschmertz and could feel ovulation on my right side every month but my left side did every other month. No twins actually happened for me though.
Its gotta be the founder effect - when a new eg colony is founded otherwise rare genetics can become the norm when one of the founders happened to have that rare trait

As a person who was never really interested in having kids but finds cool stories fascinating, I find your one sentence mildly horrifying and really intriguing.
I had a preschool class with identical triplets. The mom wanted them all to have their own identities so would put clips in their hair with their first initial for a couple days and then we were expected to tell them apart. Then she proceeded to have them take turns picking out which matching outfit they all would wear each morning. 🙄 Nailed it.😑
My mom was an identical twin. As a kid, I always kept getting them mixed up. My mom got married on her birthday, which it did overshadow the other twin's birthday, but I don't think she cared. They were called "mirrored" twins where my mom was right handed, her twin was left-handed. My mom loved bright colors and her twin liked dark colors, and so on. And yes, they can feel each other's pain.
My father is an identical twin. My grandmother had two sets of identical twins. My dad and his brother were a little bit of a prankster when they were younger so they have many stories they could tell. They would also get very strange questions about what it is like being a twin.
The one that really sticks out to me was when my dad and his brother were seriously asked, "How do you know which twin you are when you wake up in the morning?"

Kids ask some wild questions. Basically I knew a family wherein one child was born in England and the other in Germany but they grew up in Germany as German speaking children. A child once mused that it wasn't really fair on the one born in England with an "English brain" to have to grow up translating everything in their head first before they spoke, as if they were hard wired to only produce English thoughts that needed translating. We said "but they grew up learning German...?" and the child replied "yes but their BRAIN was made in ENGLAND." I couldn't get over it. 😂😂😂

To add to that question, I’ve heard one of us ask “So did your mom have to have sex with your dad’s twin to have you?” Apparently he was under the impression that humans cannot have multiple children at once without having multiple partners, but managed to pin down that children tend to resemble their parents.

I love how almost half this video is either Simon or Danny going on a complete tangent. I had honestly forgotten what the video was about by the time he was done talking about Danny’s meeting his various twin friends again.
I’m an identical twin and my mother specifically chose to dress us differently and choose significantly different names for us so that we would grow up having our own distinct identities and to help cut down on confusion. I enjoy being an identical twin, though there has been some tension in our relationship over the years.
There were 4 pairs of identical twins in my high school 3 of which were in my year and sometimes several in the same class. There was also a set of triplets where 2 were tall identical lads and one fraternal runt, god knows how that works and Im thinking its probably rather rare.
Edit: There were actually 5 sets. I forgot about the two brothers that went on to run the local drug trade. They laundered all the cash though their fine dining restaurant situated directly adjacent to the police station. As far as I know the cops never caught on even though the business was empty most nights of the week.
We had 4 sets of identical twins, 1 set of fraternal twins, and a set of triplets in school too. Two of those sets were actually physically different enough to tell apart and not identical-identical. The other 2 who were indistinguishable from each other except by clothes. The fraternal triplets were very different from each other, 2 girls and a boy. Most triplets these days are from the IVF method of throwing everything you can at the wall, so to speak, and hoping at least one will stick. Many times multiple eggs will take and then you get fraternals. Identical twins happen when one egg splits into two (or more, but is rare). I think with the popularity and effectiveness of modern IVF were gonna see lots more incidents of fraternal twins and triplets in a few decades.
The triplets where there's two identical and one fraternal sibling is 2 separate eggs were fertilised and one of those eggs split into the two identical twins. The other stayed singular and is the runt as you say lmao

If I'm not mistaken though it was never very popular... Many of the multiples that were born during the boom of assisted reproduction, actually happened because of a drug that made women ovulate more then once a month

I have known many sets of twins in my 46 years. But all three sets of identical twins were close family friends. My mom's best friend had girls, my brother had best friends who were identical, and I actually had friends in high school who were identical triplets. Yes, they were identical....but even so in every case they all looked ever so slightly different, and you could tell them apart. The triplets actually were involved in National groups for identical study. Not sure what exactly they did, but a couple times they would go to research centers and conventions.

I am an identical twin. We had 8 pairs of twins in one of my primary schools. We went our separate ways on joining the Army after high school. Having lived, at times, half a world apart, we have repeatedly been confused. Our social security numbers are 1 digit off, My initials are DCH, his, DFH. Of course our birthdays are the same. For the last 10 years we have lived on the same street. The oddest "twin question" I ever got was when someone introduced themself to me telling me I looked just like a guy he knew named David. I said "That is because we are identical twins." His response was, "Still?" I still scratch my head over that one.
How did you reply to the “ still ?”
I know a pair of twins with the same father, but conceived 3-4 days apart! It’s rare but totally possible, just like the two fathers type of twins.

@@dragondeeznutts It's rare, but some women can ovulate twice per cycle. I do every other month, one of my ovaries just pops out two back to back. It's not a big deal, in fact, I didn't know until I was in my 20s and undergoing special tests. If you ovulate and have sex with one man, the egg gets fertilized, and a little while later you ovulate again, have sex with another man, and that 2nd egg gets fertilized, you end up with two babies from two fathers conceived on different days.
😂 This often occurs when a gentleman entertains multiple women at the same time. We call them hood twins. They are also usually neighbors.
If the mother ovulated and more than one egg was released, both could have been fertilized days apart since sperm and eggs can both survive in the womb for several days. You would be able to tell by developmental differences at birth. Like one twin would have more developed lungs.
My favorite personal twin-friend story: it was the late 90s. I lived in Seattle, WA, while my older sister was attending university in Fort Collins, Co. I went to visit, and met her roommate, Amy. Returning home, I started a new term at my local Community College. Walking into day one of an English class, I was (to put it mildly) surprised to see Amy sitting in my class. Except, it wasn't Amy. It was her twin sister, Jennifer. 1200 miles separating us, one twin my sisters roommate, the other my classmate. The odds must be staggering.
On the knowing twins thing, I'm a swimming teacher and for a couple of years before covid I had SIX sets of twins in my classes each week (5 at one pool in inner-north Melbourne, one at another - 5 identical). It was crazy! I knew a couple sets during my uni days too.
There were at least 6 or so sets of twins in my school and 2 of them were identical. Im pretty sure Danny's had more jobs than actually exist in the world, idk how, but every script when he talks about his past jobs it's almost always a different job.

My sister and I were one of three pairs of identical twins in our high school graduating class, and now one of my best friends is a mirror image twin. It was really fun when she shared an apartment with my sister and I.
Just started vid but the first thing that comes to mind when putting Argentina and twins in the same sentence is Joseph Mengele. He had escaped to south america after WW2, was notorious for his fascination and medical experiments on twins.
Growing up in the 60s, we had a family across the street that had 2 sets of identical twins. Every morning in the summer we would determine who was who and then we played together all day. 🙂🇨🇦
When I was a kid I was friends with identical twins. They wore the same glasses but one's were blue and the other pink. It was very handy to always know which was which. Of course it would also be very easy for them to switch identities for a day.
I went to senior school with three sets of twins, two sets identical. I dated one half of all three sets at one time or another. The only way to tell one pair apart was the one I dated had a tiny mole on her cheak. The other identical pair were ginger, I eventually married one of these girls but they were easy to tell apart having different hair cuts. On one occasion my wife and her twin went shopping for a dress to wear to a wedding, in different towns on the same day and came home with the same dress. Unfortunately my wife passed away sometime ago now. Eventually I remarried a lady from a different area, she had twin boys (not identical) and one of my step-sons now has twins a boy and a girl conceived with the help of IVF.

I've known 4 sets of identical twins back in school. (And 3 sets of fraternal) One Pair of identical twins I was close friends with from elementary all through high school... and the crazy part was that they genetically were identical, but didn't *look* identical. They looked fraternal, so much so that their mom was convinced that the doctor had it wrong (he didn't, she admitted there was only one placenta). They were so easy for me to tell apart, but they did look extremely similar. Genetics and human development are crazy.

My sisters are identical and I also have 2 sets of twins that are cousins who are all born in the same day but 2 years apart from each. I believe it all stems from my Grandad on my dad’s side who is a triplet, Christmas is insane 😂
At my school, we had a pair of twins and a younger brother. Everyone thought they were triplets and thought the younger brother was held back.
In my 24 year teaching career, I've taught 2 pairs of fraternal & 4 pairs of identical twins.

My town, too. We derive from Welsh immigrants who moved here to with the mines, and there are some bus stops that still unload half a bus full of gingers as they roll through the stops.

How to find out which twin you're talking to:
Ask the one you're speaking to "what's your brother/sister doing these days?". Doesn't always work but sometimes it means they have to mention a name in their reply. As a twin myself, I can confirm we see this question coming and personally I DELIBERATELY mention her name in the reply to save the hassle.
I've known two sets of Identical twins......Even though they look identical to most people there are subtle differences between each including minor physical differences, individual mannerisms and varying personality traits.....One set of Identical Twins had their own childhood language that they happily chatted away while baffling everyone in the room. Hilarious and interesting....😎❣🌎

I went to highschool with a girl that identical twins were born every other generation on her mom's side. They had traced it back 5 generations. The younger couple generations were her great grandmother was an identical twin, her mom was one, then she had identical twin boys.
Third cousins may be closer than you think. My first cousins are, technically, genetically closer to me than a half sibling due to our identical twin mothers marrying brothers.
Here I thought Danny was making a nod to beloved British sitcom The Good Life/Good Neighbours with the Pinky and Perky reference only to find out The Good Life named THEIR pigs after a BBC children's show from the late 50's, that later got revived in 2008.
I've been friends with a few twins over the years, but only one was identical twin. Although they looked identical when we were younger, by the time we were in high school, their lifestyles had diverged so drastically, they barely passed as sisters, let alone twins. The one I was friends with was athletic, our star track runner, always in the gym, with a buzzcut because she felt it helped speed up her running time; the other twin was in the "trendy" crowd, stuffed her face with sweets to the point that she was on the pudgy side, and was focused on hair and makeup. My friend was a lesbian but not all that interested in relationships, while the "trendy" twin ended up having an affair with one of the teachers, leading to him getting arrested since she was underage. (Oh, it was QUITE the scandal!)

My mom and her identical twin often dress the same by accident. They show up to events in the same colours, one Easter they both wore the exact same jeans and sweater. They both bought it on their own and the sweater was one they wouldn’t normally wear. My grandfather is also a twin, he and my aunt never dressed the same 🤪
I bet it was because he didn't have the legs to show off the outfit... ;-)
That's what happens with my twin and I. Most of the time if we go with our first ideas for outfits we show up coordinating. We don't even have the same style.

My youngest brothers are identical twins. Myself and my mother were the only ones in the family who could tell the difference between them. They were both pranksters in school and caused a few substitute teachers to refuse to teach their class. Before they entered school, they had their own language and Mom was the only one who understood them. By high school, they became annoyed with people who refused to use their names or assumed they liked the same things. My mother was asked stupid questions like 'how do you know they are identical, since there is 2 hours difference in their birth times? " Another stupid question was "are they psychic, do they feel each other's pain?" First question would get a loud laugh and the snarky answer "that's not how conception works ". The second question didn't get an answer, except for a snort and a chuckle!

We had identical twins run in my family. I personally met 5 sets of them at various fam reunions and one set were my first cousins.
My hometown also had a few sets of identical twins and a number of fraternal. I never thought it was odd until Simon's reaction. 😮
Apparently there is a 1 in 250 chance of having identical twins. So I would say most people have probably known identical twins in their lives. It doesn't mean they're friends with them. But if you think about all the people you've been to school with, worked with, and known elsewhere, it's in the thousands. You would have at least crossed paths closely with identical twins.
At my old high school there was about 5 sets of twins, mostly fraternal, but it was odd that there was so many since my school was tiny. My graduatiing class had 30 or so people and it was the largest they've ever had, to give you some perspective.
My maternal grandmother was an identical twin. Around 1950 in south-east Norway she and her sister joined a study of identical twins with 7 other pairs of identical twins in the region. They became fast friends with the other twin pairs and long after the study was over they still got together for summer garden parties. The photos of the gatherings are really trip-y, as they all did their best to dress and style themselves identical.

I've met a man who fathered fraternal twin girls, raised them for some years as his own, and then during the divorce some dirt came to light and he demanded a paternity test... and discovered that only one of his daughters was actually his. It's crazy!
We have a few sets of fraternal twins in our extended family tree, and I was always told that fraternal twins can run in families as there's a genetic component to the mother releasing more than one egg per cycle, while identical twins are pure happenstance.

Twins run in my family. Myself, my mother, my gran, my great grandfather and my great great gran were all twins, no skipping a generation in this family. The unfortunate catch is, every one of those pregnancies only resulted in one child. I reabsorbed my twin early on, my mum and gran both were born alongside their underdeveloped twins.
For this reason I really didn’t want twins. The fear of carrying two babies to only birth one was overwhelming. But it wasn’t something I could escape. I wanted kids and my second pregnancy turned out to be twins. They’re turning two next month. I don’t know if it’s the advancements in medical care or something I specifically did, but I got very lucky and I’m so happy.
And if you think two at once would be easier than one, just put down whatever it is you’re smoking, coz absolutely not.

I had 2 sets of identical twins in high school. My sister and my brother had identical twins. And then they had twins, but not identical. My grandmother who was born in Italy in 1900 was aa twin, and they were called Romeo and Juliette. When they came to America she was Julia, and he became Humbert! 🧐

It's happened. There was, many years ago, a lady that contacted a radio talk show, asking if twins can have different fathers. Turns out one twin looked like her husband, red hair, blue eyes, and very very pale skin, while the second twin was black. The mother had blond hair.
Thought it was quite entertaining about her predicament and interesting as well.

I've know two sets of identical twins in my life.
The first set were guys I knew in high school, I ran into one in college and had a brief flirtation with him. Then, years later, a high school friend friended me on Facebook and she was married to one of them. The same one? I wasn't asking.
The second set was the pastors wife. Her twin worked at the grocery store I went to regularly. So you can imagine I was doing the "Hi! How are you!?" for almost a year before one of them clued me on.

I took on a volunteer gig at my school and I covered weekends. No one was there to introduce me to my coworker. So I didn’t know his name, but he wasobviously told I’d be coming because he knew my name.
The first weird thing was that we seemed to have that awkward first conversation twice. Then I would swear I just left him in one part of the building and then I would run into him walking by me from somewhere else. I was having serious issues with Deja Vu all day until I walked into our workshop near the end of the day and discovered I didn’t have one coworker, I had identical twin coworkers. I stood there stunned for the longest time, then we all had a good laugh about it. I really thought I was losing my mind.
All that said, they always dressed similarly. Not identically but similar style and tastes for sure. I chalked it up to two people who shared so many experiences that they were inclined to make similar choices.

The father being a twin MAY relate to identical twins but will have no influence on fraternal twins. Fraternal twins happen if the mother's body releases two eggs at once. The father has nothing to do with that!
There was an episode of Law & Order where they were investigating a fertility doctor who had a abnormally high rate of twins. Turned out he was the father of all of them. This episode reminded me of that.
Come to Portsmouth UK. i've never lived in a place where i've met so many twins. I worked in a company where in 5 years I worked with 8 sets of twins, 5 of which were identical. In fact in a floor with 60 staff, we had 3 sets of twins. It was just so strange. I'd only ever met one set of identical twins but here I was with multiple sets! It was also fascinating

I've know two sets of identical twins. Two of my cousins are identical twins, and I also knew a pair in school. Fortunately for them, the school was sensible enough to put them in different classes. Really reduced the scope for confusion on the teachers' part. Humerously, we had another pair of twins who were both in our class, but they were brother and sister, so less likely to be confused for each other.

Met a lady when I was still doing bridal retail who was pregnant and concerned she wouldn’t fit in her dress by the time the wedding came around, but hadn’t had an ultrasound yet to get a good look at what she was cooking. She was already showing despite being quite early on. I jokingly asked her if twins ran in the family and she said yes (on both sides). I went to junior high with identical triplets. They didn't dress alike but kept their hair the same length. It took me about 6 months to get from , "she sure changes her colthes a lot" to " oh, they're twins" to finally seeing them all togeher....
As an identical twin who has attended the Twins Day's Festival, in Twinsburg, OH, for over 30 years, with around 2000 sets of other twins each year, it's hard for me to imagine anyone not knowing at least one set of identical twins. I know literally thousands, lol.
My sister and I (we're 54) were the first twins born into our family, either side, in 100 years. And in that prior set, Nettie and Nellie, one died at 4 yrs, the other at 16, with no children.
My mother, who had two singletons prior to our birth, said we were by far the easiest, because we had each other to entertain ourselves, built in playmates if you will, taking loads of time and pressure from her shoulders.
My sister and I, along with two other sets of ID twins from the US, traveled to China to attend the country's first ever twins festival, held in Yunnan Province in 2005, where there is a small village near Mojiang that has an unusually high birthrate for twins as well. The locals claim it's because of the water from the village well. I imagine its far more likely to be genetics. 🤷🏻♀️
