I have been looking to get into the game for a few years now but didnt want to hunt every thing down. These changes are great and I am going to pull the trigger.
This was super useful! Thank you. I literally discovered this game about 5 days ago, as I was looking for a card game I can play solo when on holiday - I did go for the revised core set, just to give myself the option of playing with friends later down the line, but the expansions were confusing the hell out of me. I, much prefer just getting the entire campaign in a single pack. And it's going to make going back through the older stuff really simple for newcomers. Great video. Thanks! :)
Been in love with Lovecraftian setting for years, but getting into the game with all those little packs was a hard no. But with war going on and now with blackouts in my country after the russian terror missile strikes on our energy grid I finally pulled the trigger on the revised set and if my family/friends likes it, I will buy dunwich next in this new simple format. Playing it with candle lights/headlights kinda adds flavour to the setting :) I hope it will help ease long winter nights. And your channel really helped me in this decision. Thank you!
It's so tough explaining all of this to new players - I really appreciate you putting out an updated resource. Now I can just send them this video and have them let me know if they have questions. Thanks for all of your great content!
Thanks for making this guide! I am planning to get into this game and was really overwhelmed with all the various boxes and packs out there. This made it a lot easier to understand.
Thank you for this video. I have had the original Core box for many years and never got the chance to play. I have since got Eldritch Horror, Arkham Horror the Board Game, and Elder Sign. They all pumped me up to want to play the card game. So I just purchased the revised Core set and I can't wait to play but I have so many questions about all of these expansions. Crazy how much content there is.
Any chance you can do an updated guide specifically looking ahead to everything being available in the new format? So many buyers guides out there spend half the time explaining the old release model, and focus too much on the Campaigns (largely assuming player cards will be bought alongside the Campaign). Specifically it would be nice to have one that answers any of the following questions (or other similar questions about how to approach the 2 box releases) & if you could "future proof" the advice by looking ahead to the point where all Expansions are available in the 2 Box format - How many Investigator expansions do you need before a group would have enough build options to take 2, 3 or 4 players through a single Campaign Expansion? Do you need any or is the Core enough? What's a good ratio of Investigator Expansions to Campaign Expansions? More Campaigns, more Investigators, about the same? Do the Investigator Starter decks effectively replace an Investigator Expansion in terms of cards that can be used with, and give good / interesting build options to, Investigators from the Core Set / other Expansions? Are there any Campaign Expansions that require a specific Investigator Expansion, or a certain number of Investigator Expansions to have a reasonable chance of winning on normal difficulty? If you were looking towards a minimum spend, how many, and which, Investigator Expansions would be best in terms of - Being able to build viable decks for as many of the acquired Investigators as possible? Having a reasonable chance at completing all available Campaign Expansions on normal difficulty? To provide enough character build options for groups of 2, 3 & 4 players to play say 3 Campaign Expansions and still have new builds to try out either in a fourth Campaign or by replaying a Campaign? If you assume all Investigator Expansions will eventually be acquired - what order do you recommend they are bought in? Are there any Investigator Expansions which are very insular (in that they don't add a good number of varied options for characters from outside of the specific group they were packaged with)? If you were looking to build a collection of Investigator Cards where there are at least 2 viable archetypes for each colour of Investigator how many & which Investigator Expansions would you recommend? Investigator Expansions to avoid for new players? Which Investigator Expansions are considered "must have" (even if not bought straight away due to complexity)? If I'm coming from another LCG, or TCG, so am comfortable with deck building (and the Arkham style of deck building combined with a progression system is one of the key things that's attracted me to the game - anticipating more time spent building & tweaking decks than playing Campaigns) - how many Investigator Expansions are needed for a good amount of deck building options to mess around with on "day one"? Are any Investigator Expansions now pretty obsolete / underpowered when considered across the whole product line? Pro's & Cons of a progression style buying pattern - one Investigator Expansion per Campaign Expansion and if, overall, the later Investigator Expansions risk breaking older Campaigns when everything is acquired out of order? Investigator Expansions to avoid if you want to keep the game challenging on normal difficulty (because either too many broken Investigators or too many broken cards in general)?
Gosh darnit I love your arkham horror lcg content. We have long downtimes between campaigns, but every time, I return to your videos for all lovely discussion and reviews you have of all the cards and campaigns. I love it, thanks for making such great videos!
Awesome video. I'm just getting into the game and this definitely helped. I will also be checking out your new player playlist. I can't wait to start playing.
I would say the return to box for The Forgotten Age is almost a must buy for that campaign. It makes the experience so much more palatable in my opinion.
I tend to disagree with this sentiment. My opinion on The Forgotten Age is the same with or without the Return To box. I don't think players need to buy a whole cycle and the Return To for an enjoyable time. Not to mention players can adapt the Return To explore mechanic to the base campaign if they truly feel they need it.
Arkham newbie here. This helped a lot! Thank you for the thorough content. Have also watched another of your videos that explains about expansions and such, which clarified the confusion about the expansions and such.
Another great video folks. I just got the Deluxe Expansion for Path to Carcosa, just before I saw this. Really looking forward to playing that for the first time but I feel like I might be chasing down some pricey mythos packs if they do get discontinued soon. Damn. Might skip to EofE until they've re-released everything in the new format.
This was super helpful. Great to know what to not waste money on at the minute as a new player as I wouldn't get the use out of them. I have 1x core set and the Dunwich legacy campaign expansion. You mention a few other expansion sets in the video, is that the order you would recommend them in?
I would probably grab some player cards next. The Dunwich or Carcosa Investigator Expansion would likely be a great place to start. After that, I'd look at alternating between campaigns and investigator expansions. We have a video coming out this Sunday to help with the order to pick up campaign expansions!
Thanks for a nice video. My friends have the non-revised core set, so I’m going to buy a starter (probably Nathaniel, just for the name) and play their copy a few times. If I like it enough, I’ll buy my own revised core. From there I’ll decide for myself if I’d prefer to have more scenarios, more player cards, or a little bit of both. Lots of stuff looks appealing, but I’m not sure what I’ll get the most enjoyment/use from, until I have more experience.
They probably will phase out the Return To boxes as storage thing. Since it seems like the campaign boxes can easily fit all of the campaign content with the return stuff.
The Campaign boxes may fit the cards from the Return To box of that campaign along with the rest, but the con with this I have is that the Campaign boxes should have been a little higher to support the Return To dividers. It seems like you still have to bag the scenario specific sets and the other encounter sets to keep them separate. A divider system makes bagging the cards unnecessary. And it's easier to find what you're looking for, opposed to not bagging and/or dividing cards and instead keeping all cards in one big pile in one place. I think I'd prefer the Return To boxes to still be released, so that I can still make a good use of a higher deck box with dividers for the encounter sets, while the playing cards (built decks) go in the Campaign boxes. Or otherwise, stop the release of the Return To boxes, but provide players with a suitable dividing system for the Campaign boxes, like little tuck boxes for each scenario set and an additional one for the rest of the encounter sets.
Thanks for the video, i hope thay you will update this soon. My first revised core set will arrive soon. I play Elder Sign every week now, i hope Arkham Horror TCG will alao catch me.
I believe that is what I said at this point in the video? That there is no new art in these boxes but there was in the revised core. EDIT: I see, you're just confirming my confirmation. :D
I wonder what they will do for example with upgraded First Aid in the Carcosa Investigator expansion. Use sill the old art? Use the new art from Revised Core? Don't reprint the card at all, because it was already among the added cards from Revised Core Set?
Lmao I thought this video was about general recomendations of what upgrades or new cards to get with the XP after scenarios, still interesting vídeo tho, love u guys 😎
Literally played it for the first time yesterday (just The Gathering) and thoroughly enjoyed the story, the variety of cards, deck building and the prospect of the expansions. Until i saw your video i was totally confused about the different types of product so thank you for explaining it clearly (although for a new player like me i think the Return To campaigns seem unnecessary, do the Campaign expansions use the original cards or the Return to cards?) Thank you for your video. I can now see the thinking behind the investigator and campaign expansions being separate, and as i like the story side of it i will focus my money first on the dulwich campaign expansion and probably after working through that Carcosa will be out. Then when i get bored of the players I'll buy a investigator pack. My wallet thanks you as your video has really helped me avoid buying in confusion both investigator/campaign at the same time.
The full campaign boxes use the original cards, not the “Return to” versions. The “Return to” boxes sit somewhere between remixes, patches, and a convenient storage solution that’s even less relevant with the new campaign boxes. An example of the “patching” would be in Dunwich there’s a scenario called The Miskatonic Museum where you’re hunted by a creature that grows bigger as time goes on. The way the cards work in the original Dunwich is a little clunky and the creature isn’t always threatening because the cards that power it up don’t always work. “Return to Dunwich” addresses this with some replacement cards and instructions, as well as making it more difficult with some new power ups for the monster. The initial printing of Miskatonic Museum is totally fine. It’s a fun scenario and the big bad is totally functional. The Return To Dunwich box just makes it a little better, and that’s 100% unnecessary for your first couple times playing the campaign. The video is totally right to call them luxury products, they’re cool to have but not nearly as cool as any of the campaigns themselves.
Thanks for the vid! Return to box: you recommended the NotZ one. I heard that maybe one should even add the Return to of TFA instantly, even before playing the original, cause it fixes the exploration mechanics (or something.. havn't tried it yet). Your opinion?
I don't think it's necessary. A lot of people enjoy the original Explore mechanic and if you don't when you play it, you can try using the Return To rules without needing the Return To box.
How about... a Stand-alone scenario ranking/overview? Including best player counts? I'm looking to buy a handful for my group of 4, but other than Excelsior hotel, it's hard to get feedback on these. Also, I ask about player counts because some of these were for massive FFG events, correct? So could you play those solo? with 2? With 4? Do you need more?
Epic multiplayer mode is a different kind of setup for groups of more than 4 players. Scenarios that support this are currently: The Labyrinths of Lunacy The Blob That Ate Everything War Of The Outer Gods (and the upcoming for a regular release) Machinations Through Time Labyrinths is VERY lackluster, if not played in epic multiplayer mode, but Blob and War are excellent in your regular private group, too. At least with 3 players, I have not tried them in solo. Have not played Machinations yet.
Thanks for the video. Im new to the game. I ve been playing LOTR LCG though. I bought most deluxe boxes for LOTR, and few adventures later on. I wanted to explore the different locations of Middle Earth. Would it be a good idea to do the same with AH ? I know this game is more about campaigns, but what i wanted was to also experience different environments of the mythos (arkham, innsmouth, jungle ...). Im not sure I m into campaign. I dont do them in LOTR... In my case Buying stand alone (the ones in venice or in egypt...) is really a bad idea ? Are they that difficult ? Thanks !
Maybe I missed it. But did you guys give a call what to buy after the revised core box? Starting with edge of the world? Or waiting for the revised Dunwich cycle? Or...?
I hope there won't be more major changes to the distribution model, and you won't have to record another one soon. In retrospect, it's odd that it took so long for them to switch distribution models, but I suppose they were locked in to the previous LCG model.
If l’m completely new… what do you suggest for starting in this game and gave me the real idea of what this game is about…? Like the first boxes that you with all your experience suggest?
Hey guys, I'm a bit late to this party, but I have a question. If I buy the new format of a cycle - do I still need to buy the Return to boxes? For example Dunwich Legacy came out in 2022 in the new format. The return to box is from 2019. Will it still add new stuff to the 2022 release? Thanks :)
Great video! I have a question: I have only one Core Set (not the Revised Core Set) because I play solo or with one another person. Is it recommended to buy a second core set or the revised one?
If you want a second copy, I think if you can find a second original core, that'll be better price wise. However, if you really want a nice box and cost isn't an issue, the revised core comes with a nice box. If I had to point to one though, I'd say second original core.
Dunwich is likely the most common recommendation. But with the new release format, any cycle in that format that interests a group would be a good choice.
I always hear people say to play the original cycle first before adding the Return To revisions, but is that really a good suggestion? It sounds like they mostly just make the campaigns better, not really make them more difficult.
They don't always make them better. The Forgotten Age, for example, alters the explore mechanic and makes the pacing of the scenarios different (I personally prefer the rules without the Return To). The Circle Undone changes a lot of the stats being tested, so it can alter how you approach your deckbuilding. While Dunwich Legacy's Return To certainly makes it better, this is not the case for the others. They just make them different.
As a new player with only the revised core set, does it make sense to buy Edge of Earth (campaign and investigators) next to fill the time gap until revised Dunwich comes out? Or will the EoE campaign be too difficult with just EoE and Core investigator cards?
Edge of the Earth is a good product to pick up after the Revised Core. Deckbuilding is always more difficult with a smaller collection, but you'll have a great time with it.
One of the first things AH teaches is that it’s ok to lose. It’s part of the game and indeed always getting the best ending to each scenario will result in missing out on good parts of the story and some nice surprises. This also applies to EofE. Though I haven’t tried with EotE, most campaigns are playable (and winnable) with the core player cards and those from the cycle itself. In some campaigns enemy management can be a bit clunky owing to the lack of solid weapons, but EotE will not be one of them. The weapons in the player expansion smash (or mostly bash) pretty well.
@@thirteenthirtyseven4730 I think losing only really frustrating if it comes down to being limited due to the available card pool. If this is not an issue as you say then EofE/EotE/EoE will be the next purchase!
The question is, when are they going to release the new format for the other circles. Should I wait or should i buy another full cycle with the old format.
Hey Guys. I have a couple of questions. 1. Can we play expansions with the core set player cards as well? 2. Can we play any combination of player cards to play any expansions? 3. After the core game, if I dont want to pick expansions as per there release order then which one would you suggest to pick which can be played with core set players as well
All you need is a core set to play. Additional player cards will make it easier and more enjoyable. Player cards go in decks, those decks can be used for any campaign. Pick any campaign you want, order is up to you.
Best to grab some cards off the internet and have them as well as your favorite ArkhamCentral campaigns, printed professionally. With under $50 you have 1200 cards, 50 investigators, 10 campaigns and 10 scenarios. What more can you possibly ever need.
So, I have the original core set and the dunwich expansion, but no mythos packs. Should I be able to pick up the dunwich campaign expansion and have the full dunwich experience? Thanks gents.
I just bought the revised core box, would you recommend buying the Edge of the Earth Investigator Expansion for my first plays? Or should I wait? Note that in my country that's the only one available for purchase.
I have 2 original cores and the Dunwich and Carcosa cycles and honestly I'm half tempted to try and sell them and just start over. But I of course won't :p But I'm going to need to look into getting the campaign booklets nicely printed and spiral bound.
@@ellomate.. I'd get the revised core, then the Dunwich Legacy campaign & investigators, maybe grab Murder at the Excelsior because I hear it's good and has great replayability, and then the Carcosa campaign & investigators. I'd probably look to get the Starter Investigator packs after that. Then Edge of the Earth and The Scarlet Keys. But if the re-released The Forgotten Age came out before I'd bought EotE and TSK I'd get it before them.
I strongly dislike the new artwork of the revised core set, and most of the revised art is essentially censorship. That’s an element to take into account.
I think with the current card pool, Guardians is not that hard anymore. It was released right after TFA, and at that time sure a steep increase of difficulty compared to Rougarou or Carnevale. (Like TFA was compared to Dunwich or Carcosa!) But with an up-to-date player card collection, it does not seem to be really hard anymore. It's now much too easy, if you put it at the end of a campaign (even if you take the traumas from campaign resolution), and feels about right between scenario 4 and 5.
Very goad they stopped doing thise mythos packs, its suoer scummy and always held me off getting the game. Now i know they're doing new collections to make the buy in much more palatable im looking to see what i can get!
I have been looking to get into the game for a few years now but didnt want to hunt every thing down. These changes are great and I am going to pull the trigger.

This was great recap. I havent touched AHLCG since we lost interest during the Forgotten Age campaign. I wasn't even aware the new distribution style.
This didn't give me a guide on how to buy The Deep Gate for less than $200, but apart from that, another excellent video.
I feel like adding cards to novels was kind of a jerk move on FFG’s part. I’m just saying that because I have an LCG crush on Molly Maxwell.
Thanks for a nice video.

I’d like to just get the revised box and insert to store active campaigns and/or single scenarios in.

Will the new re-releases include any of the Return To cards?
They will not.
With the new release model for Dunwich, will I still need to buy the Return to Dunwich box? Or does it come with the new combined campaign box?
You will still need to buy the Return To Dunwich box.
That’s the part I really dislike of FFGs… hate to buy almost empty and expensive boxes… 😤
Who else has everything but still watching this?
[raises hand]
Every day of the week :)
9:40 no, there are no new arts in campaigns. It was said on the FFG stream by MJ Newman.

Scenarios that support this are currently:
The Labyrinths of Lunacy
The Blob That Ate Everything
War Of The Outer Gods
(and the upcoming for a regular release) Machinations Through Time
Labyrinths is VERY lackluster, if not played in epic multiplayer mode, but Blob and War are excellent in your regular private group, too.
Or...?
For campaigns, buy whatever is available to you and what interests you.
In the new product format boxes, are they not correcting previous edition's card errata and campaign guide errata?
I am unaware on this. My gut says they have done errata, but I can't speak with full authority on that.
One core box and the EOTE campaign, tbh it has never been so simple.
Are there PDFs for all the cycle guides such that we can get them printed/spiral-bound for our older cycles?
I believe they do exist out there somewhere. Maybe start with Fantasy Flight Games' website. :)
Someone said the prebuilt decks are those suggested decks from the original core set.. so you still have to dig for your 1 handgun 😅
Can we "play" Dunwich Legacy campaign with core set investigators? or we need atleast dunwich legacy investigator and cards to have a chance to win?
You can play it with just the core set inv and still win!
@@PlayingBoardGames Thank you!
You might have addressed this, but what should a new group get next after "exhausting" the revised core set? Dunwich or something else?

@@PlayingBoardGames Thanks for the advice, I am sure your deck building video will help with that :)
Dunno why i watch this, cause i have ALL for Arkham 🤣
Do the rules allow now players to pick any card from an expansión box from the very begining of a campaign??
Yup, you can play with any cards you want in your collection!
@@PlayingBoardGames Great, thnx!
So, I have the original core set and the dunwich expansion, but no mythos packs. Should I be able to pick up the dunwich campaign expansion and have the full dunwich experience?
Thanks gents.
Yes! You'll have some extra encounter cards, but it'll be the full campaign in the campaign expansion.
I just bought the revised core box, would you recommend buying the Edge of the Earth Investigator Expansion for my first plays? Or should I wait? Note that in my country that's the only one available for purchase.
I think more player cards always allows for a more fun time.
Is it true they are not doing the Return to Boxes anymore?
The last official word was that there are no plans for Return To boxes.
I have 2 original cores and the Dunwich and Carcosa cycles and honestly I'm half tempted to try and sell them and just start over. But I of course won't :p But I'm going to need to look into getting the campaign booklets nicely printed and spiral bound.
hello if you started over what would
your purchase order be ?
I bought the new core set cause I'm an addict
I think with the current card pool, Guardians is not that hard anymore. It was released right after TFA, and at that time sure a steep increase of difficulty compared to Rougarou or Carnevale. (Like TFA was compared to Dunwich or Carcosa!) But with an up-to-date player card collection, it does not seem to be really hard anymore. It's now much too easy, if you put it at the end of a campaign (even if you take the traumas from campaign resolution), and feels about right between scenario 4 and 5.
It's still near impossible for less then 3 players
You guys didn’t mention card sleves
We have a whole video on it: ruclips.net/video/8amj2Rs5XsU/видео.html
Can this be a 5 player game?
With how it is currently packaged, it cannot be played 5 players.
Very goad they stopped doing thise mythos packs, its suoer scummy and always held me off getting the game.
Now i know they're doing new collections to make the buy in much more palatable im looking to see what i can get!
I hate Asmodee...
