  • In the spirit of the Holiday Season I present to you one of my favorite songs played on a 1905 Grand Concert 18 1/2 inch Mira Music Box from our collection. Composed circa 1750 by John Francis Wade, this is the absolutely beautiful "Adeste Fidelis (Come Faithful Ones)" better known as "O Come All Ye Faithful". When I created the video I could only listen using the inadequate speakers on my laptop. I thought the selection sounded fine. I later decided to play the video using my headphones. What a difference! All of the resonance and deep bass notes I heard while recording the music box were there! If you have headphones or decent speakers to listen to this video I would encourage you to plug them in. You wil have enhanced your listening experience greatly. As always I thank you sincerely for stopping in for a visit and hope you enjoy the video!

Thanks for your gracious comments. The cabinet definitely enhances the sound produced by the double combs. To me there is nothing like the sound of a large disc music box that has been well maintained, especially the 18 1/2 inch Mira music box with its large bass teeth that produce the deep bass notes that other music boxes cannot.

Hurrah! What a pleasant sounding. The melody played by music-box is really enjoyable and amazing. Some antique mechanical clocks played melodies for each and every hour on built in music-box or barrel organ just before or soon after striking the hours on dome shaped bell or coiled wire gong. Nowadays these types of music-boxes and chiming clocks are electronically imitated by some quartz clocks and door bells because they contains electronically recorded and programmed circuit board of sound chips connected to speaker. But they can't beat the real music-boxes and chiming clocks.

Yes, this music box, which is rare to find in Europe, is really fascinating. I have this tune only on a modern music box, and I think to begin this year's christmas video with this modern one.

The Mira music box and music box disc played in the video were made in Switzerland. The quality and craftsmanship of Swiss instruments such as this by the Mermod Freres company was superb. I maintain all of my own music machines by myself. Once I have a machine running and sounding nice all that is needed is to play it occasionally and apply a tiny bit of light oil on the gears and bearings perhaps once a year.

I never seen or heard of this machine before and when I saw the...disk I'll call it, I realized it's a giant music box and figured "this can't sound as good as real music". Well do I feel like a fool. It sounded better than I expected.

I have loved music boxes since I was very young. I got my Father interested and he has more than me now. He bought me a Regina in the mid 1990's. I love that it plays the Polyphone and Porter. My favorite's are the Mira and Stella for the tone. I do love the arrangements for my Regina of O Come All Ye Faithful, Dinorha, Shadow dance. and several others because of there lively arrangement. I also have a GEM roller organ a Synphonion. and Pathe. Would love to share Vid and photos with you. George.

This christmas video with your 18,5" Mira in this excellent condition I showed a blind lady friend of mine, who was immediately fascinated by the sound of this music box, whith is rare to find and expensive here in Europe.

Beautiful sound!! What a great collection you have of music and early boxes. I agree todays sounds aren't as distinct as these. Does the wooden cabnit contribute to the sound? Thank you for sharing such wonderful music. The waltz's are great as well as the old jazz and blues.

1905? Wow. Were these beautiful machines just made to last for a long time or do they require constant maintenance? What sort of work goes into this works of art to keep them running?
