      Depends more on whether it's a laptop or a desktop rather than it it's a Mac or PC. My desktop from 2012 is still as fast as ever, and I'll probably keep it around until 2020 at least before upgrading the CPU/Motherboard/RAM.

      If you keep it on an older OS, sure. Putting a much newer OS on older hardware (I'm talking 2012 and older at this point) is going to give you a pretty sluggish experience. Windows generally runs better at that point.

    For the screensavers it's the switch from Metal to Metal 2 that's causing all the issues, it's a known bug and all the devs of third party screensavers have to rewrite their code

    As a SYS Admin at a University...This has literally ALWAYS been best practice especially for content creation professionals and scientists. Apple themselves tell you to backup with time machine prior to upgrading just in case, and they have always recommended a full system backup be performed even before Time Machine existed. Small companies don't have time to do sufficient debugging on macOS at the rate Apple releases new OS versions. It is still best practice even if you are an IT professional because honestly even if you never experience show stopping bugs in the betas, that doesn't mean the Gold Master wont have a new bug. This pertains to Windows, macOS and even Linux especially in production server environments.

    I really don't understand why you keep saying your hardware is old. OK - back in the good old days, they used to sell PCs with a "Sell before" date (I joke, of course), but since (say) 2010 the upgrade treadmill is broken - every year's hardware upgrades are incremental - an extra 100MHz on 2,500 MHz, and extra 4MB cache on 128Mb and so on - an extra 128GB on SSD - no real reason why a 4 year old machine should be paralysed by a new OS.
    Something was wrong - not your hardware.

    You should try cleaning the dust out of the heat-sinks and apply new thermal compound. If the fans are ramping up on the screen saver it could be a thermal issue. This is pretty common with 3 year old MacBook Pros because the heat-sinks are so small and the thermal compound Apple uses is garbage .

  • @gregthompson7793

    Was far as the screensaver goes remember HS uses metal now instead of open gl so that could be the reason why the screen saver wasn’t working as well on HS.

  • @marcopfeiffer3032
    @marcopfeiffer3032 6 лет назад

    I assume the screensaver gets a performance budget like 1% load to save battery. That might be enough on modern hardware but if your fans have to kick in for the screensaver it seems really unoptimized on sierra too.

  • @gallowsgryph
    @gallowsgryph 6 лет назад

    I tried High Sierra again after seeing this (after making a Time Machine backup), and I still had some major UI lag on my mid-2012 MacBook Air. That may be due just to the fact it only has 4 GB of memory or something, but it runs well enough on Sierra without problems, so I'm not miffed about it. Heck, I'm running Yosemite (and Snow Leopard for PPC-era games) on my early-2009 iMac, so it's not like running an older version of OS X really affects me too much.
    Good to see almost everything cleared up for you, though that screen saver lag was a bit hard to watch.

    Thank you very much for having done all these tests.
    I've stayed with Sierra because it was golden, like Snow Leopard before it, and because of the performance issues you pointed out in HS, but it's getting hard to update software now.
    My 2011 iMac 27" can never be updated beyond High Sierra. The question is did the very last High Sierra macOS 10.13.06 fix everything?
    Should I upgrade to High Sierra now?
    It may be the very last update I do on this Mac

  • @casperes0912

    I'd like to note that High Sierra included a lot of GUI rewriting with Metal instead of OpenGL. Theoretically increasing performance (and it did indeed on both my 2014 Macs), but also opening up a lot of opportunities for bugs, since rewriting your entire user interface is a big thing. Sierra rewrote some things to Metal, but HS really took the big step, and ported over Mission Control and whatnot. My theory with the screensaver, is that they just forgot it was there, and it's not been written for Metal, but the system doesn't know to kick up the OpenGL renderer for it, since it likely relied on already running systems using OpenGL before, thus it uses software rendering

    • @ComputerClan
      @ComputerClan  6 лет назад

      Hmm . . . I thought the WindowServer ran off Quartz, not OpenGL. Perhaps I'm missing something? Sorry, I'm not a developer. But that would make sense because I know the WindowServer transitioned to Metal in High Sierra. I mean . . . I know that NOW. I learned about that during WWDC, but I totally forgot about it. I don't think I mentioned it in any of these videos. Good call.

    My friend, I hope you will become famous and get into Apple bugfix team with a million $/year granted.
    I use MacOS since version 7. I track design quirks since 10.3 in a txt file called mac os sucks. The best system ever was 10.6. I have 2 mac with that still running. Unfortunately the browsers are rotting and breaking.
    I liked 10.8 alot, but it's getting old too and will not work with modern software in the next months.
    I currently use El Capitan, it's overall stable but annoying as hell, for example:
    no colored lables, spotlight results cannot be freely moved, "double click opens new window" broken, random icon graphics not upgrading in finder, broken Disk Utility, broken QuickTime Pro, new iWork Suite without functionality, small fonts everywhere
    I will go on Sierra probably next year.
    Rule 1 of IT: never upgrade what works

    I have a hard time with the idea that this machine is too old to run this well. Being you have a 15in MacBook Pro, I imagine it has similar, or better hardware than my late 2013 27in iMac, its the base model (3.2 core i5 and GeForce GT 755M 1GB ) with no upgrades ordered, I just added more RAM to it. It runs this screensaver just fine.

    I am not sure if it has to do with High Sierra or with my 2010 iMac and Macbook... but 2 days after I installed High Sierra on both computers, my iMac would get stuck at the Apple logo but was able to fix it by force restoring. 2 weeks later my Macbook had the same problem and had to Erase and Restore (back on High Sierra), a week after it did it again on the Macbook, so I erased and restored again... but now on Yosemite... bit scared of updating again and having to go thru all the trouble.

    In reference to your screen saver theory, I have a 2017 15" MacBook Pro with the 3.1GHZ i7 and Radeon Pro 560, and its choppy, it freezes every 5-8 seconds for approx 2 seconds before starting back. Nowhere near as bad as what you were seeing, however not 60fps smooth like it should be on Apple's highest end laptop, I think it might be an issue with the screensaver and how its processed (like you said maybe not GPU but CPU, still must be massively unoptimised though).

  • @ansonx10
    @ansonx10 6 лет назад

    The arabesque screensaver is laggy because they upped resolution by a lot. (It had always been kinda pixelated) I'm using dosdude1's high sierra patch on a 2009 MacBook Pro and I'm seeing more lag than you are. It should run fine on my GTX 760 hackintosh whenever I decide to upgrade.

    By the way, if you have already downloaded an older version of macOs in the app store with your apple id, you can go back in the purchased tab on mac app store and redownload previous versions :) here is a screenshot image.ibb.co/i2vypn/Screen_Shot_2018_03_29_at_2_26_48_PM.png

    It’s definitely High Sierra that’s the issue. I have a 2017 iMac and I’m having major graphics issues specifically with 32 bit apps.

    I installed normal Sierra on my Hackintosh and I updated mine to High Sierra, it's extremely stable and fast. It took awhile though coz I have graphics card issues.

    So you just now learned to backup/clone your system before major OS updates + wait for "dot" updates? Sorry but that's funny... You must be new to apple.

      I’ve used Macs daring back to 1996. This has never been an issue before.

    • @D-One

      It was kind of a joke... But still, surely you have seen thousands of people out there claiming that after updating OSX something broke... Especially if you're a Mac user for more than 2 decades. In HS the risk is a bit higher since there's a new filesystem.
      Anyway, I'm glad too see your system is performing a lot better now.

    Well, that end bit got my attention. You’re computer is 4 1/4 years old. Apple computers today on the ordinary last about 7 years in compatibility. After the 7 years, 3rd parties will continue to support that OS for about 5 extra years before finally moving to new systems, and therefore the computer is obsolete. Considering that data you’re computer can update for 3 more years and 7 years in 3rd party software. Take this comment for what you will.
