  • Williams benching Logan Sargeant so team-mate Alex Albon can race is an unprecedented scenario in modern Formula 1.
But has Williams made the right call in allowing Albon to use Sargeant's car for the rest of the weekend, having damaged his own beyond repair in a practice crash?
Scott Mitchell-Malm and Edd Straw (from Melbourne) join Glenn Freeman to discuss this brutal Williams decision, the reasons for it, and what it says about the team and how it views its second driver.

Another big thing is that the competetors now know that Williams is exposed, if they loose the car running now, they are unable to compete, so Alex has to protect the car, or risk a lot in terms of being able to compete in races. So pushing a Williams racer in the coming races, will net a pass, since they can't risk damaging the car. Japan being placed at race 4 carries risk too. While it has some run-off, due to environmental restrictions during its 1960s build, there’s not much margin at some of its high-speed corners and a serious crash is v.possible. As Sargent found out in 2023 qualifying *when he wrote off his chassis* at the final corner. That third “spare” chassis for Suzuka will be a racing chassis now, so unless Williams has started making a 4th for the first week of April or is accelerating a planned 4th that’s already begun, they could have the same situation in a few weeks. Even Brawn (who really lacked the resource for a full season’s racing when they set out) had 3 chassis at the first race in Melbourne. Good job too because even being very careful to never break the car, Rubens had done in a few front wings & cracked chassis BGP-001-01 by Singapore.

Williams did not keep Sargeant because "they believe in him". Everyone know that that is not true.
So, the question that came to my mind was "Isn't Sargeant paying for his drive?", directly or indirectly?
If he is paying for his drive, as much as I do not agree with pay-drivers, it doesn't make sense for him to pay for his drive and not be able to drive.
In addition, I would expect that to be in contract, i.e. having the contractual right to drive on every event in the calendar.
If that's the case, I would assume that something was signed this weekend which prevents Sargeant from pursuing legal action for his car having been used by someone else.
Another question that I asked myself was "What happens if this situation repeats itself in the next couple of events? Will Sargeant not be able to drive again because the other side of the garage happens to need his car?"
It could very well happen again until Williams produces another monocoque, or at least two new monocoques if Albon's damaged one being unrepairable.

It's so harsh on a personal level for Sargeant, i didn't think they'd actually do it, after all he's not stuck it in the wall, but reckon his fate was finally sealed in FP2, when after a few wobbles and small offs, he spun the car at fairly high speed and very nearly collected another car in the process. If i was Williams team principle i'd have been having kittens watching that and thinking if we're going to run the risk of writing off another car, we'd be as well doing it with the guy who'd at least have been more likely to get us up the grid and hopefully some points if we could get him in the race.
Not really sure how well it'll play out long term, it's effectively become a vote of 'yeah we don't trust you to deliver'.

If Albon doesn't score or if worse he crashes, then James is going to look like a complete fool.

It's not disrespectful, it's very understandable. Williams looks bad not because the swap, but because their lack of preparedness to supply 3rd chassis. And it makes sense to do this early in the season because as for now, Williams has good enough pace to give them favorable chance to score points, which nobody can be sure if they can keep up with midfield developments later in the season.

We need to remember that every championship position is around 10 million dollars. Now if Williams finished 8th in the championship this year and were a few points away from 7th place perhaps the sponsors would be asking why Sargeant was in the car. The sponsors are essentially the board members and you have to keep the board happy. Just a theory, maybe I'm wrong.
