  • In Cost of Living in Ecuador and Nicaragua, you'll see 14 expats talking about their cost of living. They live in these places:
    Cuenca, Ecuador
    Manta, Ecuador
    Granada, Nicaragua
    San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.
We've made an hour-long video in each of these places. Each video has 15 chapters, and Cost of Living is always one of the chapters. The present video is just outtakes from the four hour-long videos. The four videos may be available for download sometime soon.
The chapters in all four videos answer these questions:
    How is the food?
    How is the shopping?
What is your COST OF LIVING?
    How is the health care?
Do you need to know the language?
    Are you concerned about safety?
    Do you need a car?
What is there to do there?
    Where do you meet people?
What is the English-speaking community like?
    How friendly are the locals?
Where do you eat and drink, and what does it cost?
What are the pros and cons of living or retiring there?
    And much more!
Subscribe to our RUclips channel to be notified when our hour-long videos are available for download. You’ll know what to expect if you decide to go, or you’ll save yourself the time and travel money if you decide not to go. Either way you'll know everything you need to know about living day-by-day in the cheapest places to live in Latin America, and the cost of each video will be only US$10.
There's no hype, no real estate for sale, and no financial arrangements with any person or business in our videos. Just real people sharing their experiences to help you decide if and where to live or retire overseas.

    I live in Nicaragua.
    Home is 2600 sq ft.
    Have a car.
    Air conditioning in the bedrooms.
    Hot water in the showers.
Live very comfortable on less than $900 a month.
I was born in the USA and retired to Nicaragua when I was 50 years old.
Because my mom was born and raised in Nicaragua, I am also a citizen, holding dual citizenship with the USA.
    Love Nicaragua!

I live in Nicaragua and recognize some of this video from here but all of the prices the mentioned are correct for Nicaragua or maybe cheaper depending on where you live in the country.

Most of the people here are using a middleman to find a home and do everything and they add a charge so they can make a profit. Easy you can live there $500 a month living modestly. $750-1000 living large.

Wow....and I was concerned about my paltry 2400 dollars a month being enough to live on in Ecuador. Apparently, my retirement dollars go much farther there. Good news.

Interesting video. It would have been good to understand which comments were from Ecuador and which were from Nicaragua and any differences between the two countries. We are currently living in Nicaragua (in 2021) and our monthly cost of living as a couple is around US$1100, with the vast majority of that going to home rental in a very comfortably sized home. You could certainly get by comfortably on as little as $600 a month.

What a fascinating variety of comments. The best and the worst alike. I have family in Nicaragua and we would like to plan a two to three week trip in 2017 or 2018. Luckily we'll have local help on where to go and what to do. I remember being there for two summers back when I was 4 and 5... (ages ago). Anyway I have very nice memories or people, family, places and the food. It's too bad there appears to be so much open or appearance of levels of corruption and problems with services, probably depending on where one lives. I'm ordering a Lonely Planet right now. Woohoo! Viva Nicaragua!

So North americans say is cheap, cheap, cheap, because they compare cost of living to North América, that is where the error stands. Taking into cosideration that the average wage in Ecuador is about $375 a month, the $700 or more month rent is astronomical out of reach for a lot of locals. Precisely, more local people are realizing that "gringos" would over pay 200, 300 or more for a rental property. they would not even budge with other locals, saying why would they lower their asking price for rent when a "gringo" would be happy to pay so. the $250- $350 rent for a nice property is becoming more dificult to find as the locals are quikly finding out they would rather sit on the high rental asking price and not budge, not problem, there is a "gringo just around the corner they say. It is a shame as Ecuador has truly simple and low economical ways to live, but looking at what is happening with the boom of Expats coming from the north, higher prices are lurking in the horizon and are not going away. The locals are quickly learning asking for more would become very lucrative as expats keep comparing the cost of living between two totally different worlds, Its truly a shame.

    • @rikkitos32
      @rikkitos32 8 лет назад +3

That is exatly the point pal! MOST locals cant afford a rent for $700 or more a month because most North Americans(US and Canada) that are moving to Ecuador compare the cost of living with the North, and yes most North Americans could not dream of renting a nice property much less living on a $15OO social security back North, you know better than that! In Ecuador you live very confortable on a miserable $1500, thing that you cant do back north, unless you are sombodys roomate! More people with restricted income from the north are living abroad because of cost of living! The problem is they keep comparing and willing to overpay(a fact) just because its cheap to them. Thats where the problem is! Most South Americans dont even make an average of $600 a month, comprede? You have to really research or be there to better understand! I have!
And by the way, has nothing to do with North América etc. It just happen there is a boom of North Americans living abroad specially retired people, looking to strech every penny as they cant afford living on social back north, but that is just one example. Do some research or visit some of the south, you'll be surprise!

That's the downside of Gringo pricing, aint it? In the U.S., if we charged higher rent, or raised our price for anything, just because a customer was from another country, we would get our asses sued. Actually, we have these people coming here illegally, getting free medical and lots of other things, and then protesting that they are getting a raw deal!

Ecuador is a place blessed by GOD with 4 natural areas: tropical, Andean, a jungle and the Galapagos Islands; For this is where the diversity in its highest expression, with all climates; has warm beaches or snowy mountains, has beautiful towns or virgin forest, has culture, all fruits that can digest all the flowers you can enjoy lots of wildlife and lush flora, steeped in history, friendly and cheerful people. A country that is lacking but still exudes beauty. And everything is so close.
According to various magazines, newspapers and other media indicated is the country to reside after retirement.

According to them this is paramount or you will not make it , the customs are much different than most yanks realize.. I'm only repeating what I was told, personally I don't have a clue..

I like what they have to say but with anything, you take it all with a grain of salt. I laugh at so many of the comments talking about not wanting gringo's in their country, yet when an american says they don't want illegals in their country, everyone looses their mind. Personally, if you made it and you can afford it, I don't really care if I am overcharged because I am an american. I spend 20+ years of my life serving this country, when I am done with the military, I plan to move to central america and actually enjoy my retirement. I don't know what the cost of living really is as again, I take what those in the video said with a grain of salt as they are not me and I dont know what they are willing to forego vs what I am willing to forego. I anticipate to live off of $2500-$3000 a month.
Why because I can, that is why. Even spending that much money, I am still able to put away $2000/month in savings. Like I said, I worked hard for my retirement, endured 2 wars and I damn well deserve to enjoy my later years. I just want to surf, relax, and live life without having to worry about anything but enjoying life vs life owning me.

  • @12vLife

Tell me about the national medical health care plans. I heard $65/mo for a 55yo, but does that cover you if you get a terminal illness like cancer or a major trauma and you have to spend a year in the hospital? Are you allowed to own land and build? Easy to find all the stuff you can in the States in Home Depot and Walmart? No Amazon right?
