Nicely done. That solo got a lot of playing during development to make sure the Wakeman "cat fight" sound was well in evidence.

Find the live version of Starship Trooper from the 1978 Wembley gigs. Best version and solo from Rick.

Someone just asked me what my favorite synth solo was and I pointed them here!

I have always felt that this is the best synth solo of all time. So many great moments are packed into only 40 seconds. Its a crime that there is only audio of it during Yessongs, yet we get to see Steve's solo - which is also great.
The sound here is pretty damn close but there is something missing. Rick adds a tiny bit of pink noise or noise modulation which adds a little more rasp to the sound. It is played perfectly however!

You should have shown a picture of a $5,000 Moog Voyager and said THAT is what you were playing. That under $100 VST would have fooled most everyone.

Surely it was Tony Kaye that wrote the keyboard solo for Starship Trooper?

The Minimoog sound and the notes seem spot on, but in the second part of the solo the timing is a bit off. Wakeman didn't play on the original studio version of Starship Trooper on The Yes Album (1971), which had Tony Kaye on keyboards, so I'm guessing this must be an emulation of Rick's solo from the live version on Yessongs (1973).

    • @SergioFrias

yes its from the live version :)

@@SergioFrias It is indeed from Yessongs (1973), The Yes Album was released in 1970, Fragile was released in 1971, the first album Wakeman performed on.

Well done. But I just don't think this solo is such a big deal. I mean, if you hear through all the three and four note fiddling around key centers, the underlying melodic line is actually pretty boring.
