Thanks Alex! Good to have you back. For many photographers not able to go to workshops or chat w other photographers, your videos are so valuable to us. There are thousands of gear videos but not so many about the art. Thank you. ❤
I missed your videos so much but this one was very touching for me in a way I couldn't have anticipated. What a journey Rosalind take us through here. Also the book design is really something. I've been photographing my personal life for quite some time now, this video gave me many ideas on what to do with my images. Thank you a lot, Alec, this was really special.
I can’t begin to tell you how valuable these videos are. I’ve probably watched each one five times, just trying to soak up every last bit of knowledge. Please keep it going!
@@AlecSothRUclips People like you keep my passion alive. I'm not capable of producing work of this magnitude, and I'm fine with that, but seeing those images and hearing your thoughts on the images inspires me nevertheless. It still makes me come up with ideas and massively boosts my satisfaction with what I manage to create. You motivate me to come back to shooting again and again and think of actual "projects" involving my friends, which in turn creates images that capture our love and youth and the times we live in. I'm sure they will be incredible to look at in 50 years, especially if some of us might be gone by then. And it's a bonding experience as well. I just couldn't do it had I not seen all those great images that are out there. Since there's no way I could ever afford something like a workshop of yours, you can't imagine how thankful I am for videos like this.
Alec, please keep making videos. It’s as if we’re having a conversation about the photo book and that’s my favorite part. It’s also a way that photographers can support each other not only by purchasing a new photo book but also learning about a new photographer who they might not be familiar with. Thanks, Alec!
yess, best content on youtube. welcome back. your video on sequencing where you show "a fine day" was life changing. bought your book "gathered leaves" after that and love it. thank you!
There is honesty and freedom within this book and its contents, with time lost and time Rosalind still has. Whether the act of leaving will be through suicide or natural causes, the act of passing is woven inbetween the pages, from leaving the old life to considering leaving her life as an artist, to leaving life. It's also put together with such care, and such tempo, it truly left me speechless. All that was felt, but after the diptych at 40:03 i just began to cry. Thank you for the video Alec, it's always a day to cherish when you upload. *It also all reminded me of Vortex by Gaspar Noe.
Oh, wow. I had just been pining over the loss of your wonderful videos the other day and here I see that Christmas has arrived early! I agree with you-my first thought on seeing her series of beach photos was that they were set up with strangers. There’s a certain lack of closeness and familiarity in them. Really great insights and commentary on this wonderful book. Thank you.
I'm happy to see you back! I love the care you put into appreciating things. That first solarized photo with one eye obscured made me think of a camera. Looking through the camera as a mask.
Thank you for showing this amazing book! As a photography student in austria, studying your images and books in class, it is great to see you talk about work like this, would love to see more!
No way! You're back! I've been actively checking your channel every couple of months since your last video. Love this series. Also, Alan Schaller has returned as well. Which might be a sign for me to get back to shooting...
hey alex thanks a lot! it's just great fun to share your perspectives and interpretations of photography. it has often led to new doors opening in my brain, often with a crackle and a crunch. 😅
Thank you. Listening to you looking and responding to a photo book by another person is very useful for others attempting to do photo books of their own. Always important to reveal how the sum is greater than the parts. It is a form in its own right. Thank you. Please continue.
Thank you for making this video Alec. The photos in the book are very moving and frankly haunting. This is definitely something I will come back to listen to many times. I have been rewatching your Democratic Forrest video quite often recently, listening to you really helps me and helps my work. Thank you, all I want is for you to make whatever you want to make but selfishly I hope you make a lot more of these.
What a nice feeling to come across your video! I've been following your lessons for some time, and I'm always amazed by your ability to analyze the depths of photobooks from such a simple and generous standpoint. Thank you!
I didn't know you had a RUclips-channel, but really happy to find it in my recommendations! This honestly might not have been a book I would have picked up at first sight. But I enjoyed listening to your overview and insights. I definitely have a better understanding of her work now.
We have these overlapping yet contrasting genealogies, both similarities and dissimilarities in life and work. I love following the visual breadcrumbs between lived (and death) experiences. Without a formal education, I get a lot from you, drawing lines through time for different people's work. So much more depth than just viewing people in a clinical vacuum of their projects and achievements.
Thanks so much Alec, as always very insightful thoughts. Ordered the book right away, hope the MACK guys give you some commission, they really should. Happy Holidays to you and family
As much a book of sound advice as a book of her world. We can all take something from this work. Great to see the written word; so many photo books seem reluctant to express in words, it often odds so much more to the impression.
Hello Alex, Here is South Korea. I am fan of yours. A few years ago I got your photobook “Sleeping by the Mississippi". When I was facing that, it gave me a question about "what is beauty and attitude of dealing with it". I am not a person who take a photo, but painter. I really impressed of it. I'm sorry that I can only express it like this because I'm not good at English, but I'm very happy to know the RUclips channel.❤
was reminded of your eggleston video after looking at his work in class today, then started rewatching some of your old videos this evening and now this pops up... excited to say the least
Hello Alec, this video just triggered in me an internal explosion. I needed it to illuminate and start opening a door for my creative process. I am starting a photography project as part of a photography course in Tel Aviv called "Boundaries of Consciousness" given by two wonderful photographers, Yuval Tebol and Daniel Tchetchik. Thank you so much!
Good to have you back I’ve subscribed all the way from Northern Spain. It’s such a shame that to be able to enjoy a book you need to be a millionaire so channels like yours are so important especially for the community.
Thanks. Hopefully there will be more photobook libraries that can be used as resources in the future. The physical experience of the book is so important.
Just here to leave a supportive comment before watching 🫡 Edit: Thanks so much for sharing this. I’ve been very frustrated with the limitations felt through self expression in my work, and this project has a lot of really interesting things to say/advice to offer. Often I feel a lot of shame wrapped in making selfish work. Hearing you talk about a project similarly just for the artist, and really enjoying it, is really good for me to hear. And that cover, I’m sure I could write thousands of words on it alone.
Good to see you here again Alec :) Do you have an idea why women photographers tend to work more with the self portrait than men ? Hope we'll have more videos from you in 2025 !
I disagree. I'd give anything to see a book like this from someone I've never heard of. But it's a lot harder than you think. It's like the difference of sharing something funny online and doing an hour long stand up performance.
Thank you so much for this video! I will be thoroughly enjoying this beautiful book even more now. I cannot wait for more videos of you discussing photo books. They are just so good and they teach me so much about photography. Greetings from the Netherlands!

Thank you. Fear not, I'm completely incapable of doing a gear video :)
when I opened up this new video and heard your voice, I had a feeling like seeing a good old friend after a long separation
Thanks Dima!
He has risen.
It only took 2 years, c'mon

Funny because, moved by nostalgia and lack of motivation, I was going through your old videos these last days 😊 Thank you for a new rambling ❤
You are the one!
You are very generous to make these videos - a natural teacher.
Nice of you to say, thank you
How lucky we are....to have you on YT! Thank you!

Thank you (says the turtle)
What a beautiful work. Your videos have changed the way I read photobooks, and they bring me so much joy.
So kind, thank you

So glad to se you back! You have introduced me to so many incredible photographers with thoughtful critique. Thank you!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing :)
Loving this, the book and how you see and present it. Love it so much that I ordered a copy. Thank you Alec for doing this.
That makes me happy Birgit. You seem like the perfect audience for this book.
Thank you Alec, and that makes me happy.@@AlecSothRUclips

Hey Alec! Great to see you back on RUclips. I missed your in-depth knowledge on photography.
Thanks for this. The book has many echoes of Jo Spence’s work in the 80’sand 90’s in the UK. Good things don’t age but we do!! 0:1
Welcome back!!!
Thanks so much Alec, as always very insightful thoughts. Ordered the book right away, hope the MACK guys give you some commission, they really should. Happy Holidays to you and family
Wonderful. Thank you.
I love these videos.Ramble on, it's all interesting.
Such an insightful analysis of her work. Many thanks.
Thanks Bill. I'm just so excited abou this book
An inspiring book that makes you want to keep going. Thank you.
Agreed!
Alec has got his mojo going again. Thank you for this video!
Rusty mojo, but thanks
Amazing to have you back on RUclips 🫶🏻

Photobooks with text are tough to make, and even tougher to market. But when done well, they can be so powerful.

Lucky to have met you.
For five decades I thought I was an amateur photographer, and now, after having seen your 'readings', I think I'm just an amateur...
Thank you!
You’re a brilliant person. 🙏🏻🫶🏻
thank god please drop moreeeeee
I'll try. I forgot how much a dislike having to rewatch myself while editing!
a early christmas gift from my favorite photographer.

Reminds me work of Indian photographer Dayanita Singh. Her mother is also a frequent subject of her work.
Ah yes, I'm a huge fan of Singh and can see the connection

'24 is a low photo mojo year... good to see you have emerged
"Somewhere to Disappear" isn't it? Good to watch your videos again.
I can recommend the photobook +2°C Consequences by Jakob Dall
please tell me this series is back! i love these brother
Hey Alec, I'm the guy who interviewed you over the phone on The Last Days of W about 15 years ago. Do you remember?
I barely remember W!
Im starting to think Alec Soth is a Nexus Being, and his upload schedule determines the fate of the Sacred Timeline. No pressure, Alec.
Funny (and insane)!
Nice. Hopefully you will review some other less ego-centric photobooks in the near future. Ur one of the 🐐s. Thank you.
Interesting comment. My taste does run toward more personal work, but I'll keep your comment in mind.
Winogrand 1964
OMG
Not sure if I should watch the rest of this video or go see the book in real life first..........
Get the book first!
Photobooks like this are funny. If it was a rando from the internet, it would be considered a bunch of crappy selfies.
I disagree. I'd give anything to see a book like this from someone I've never heard of. But it's a lot harder than you think. It's like the difference of sharing something funny online and doing an hour long stand up performance.
Alex Soth proving once again the vapid nature of pretentious photo criticism.
Do you want to go and have an itty bitty cry about it?
