Fun fact: the Tatra, Matra and Fatra mountains are called that way because in the language of some tribe that predates, slav migration, Tatra means "the white mountain". Fatra means "the red mountain" and Matra means "the blue mountain". This helps to explain the colors in our flag.

@@bigbumer5719Actually no. Slovenia's colours have nothing to do with Pan-Slavism. Slovenia uses the flag and the colour scheme of the Duchy of Carniola.
@@QuinlanLJ That is actually not true, originally Duchy of Carniola didnt have a flag, only a coat of arms. Later it used white-blue bicolor. White-blue-red was first raised in 1848 during springtime of nations, same time pan-slavism started gaining traction
@@bigbumer5719 "In 1836 Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria restored the original white color to the shield and recognized the white-blue-red combination as the official Carniolan color scheme." Original Carniolan coat of arms was blue and white, but there were several changes made to it, they added red and gold (crown) elements to it. But this is more of a lucky coincidence, in 1848 they adapted pan-Slavic tricolour. Medieval Carniolan flag would probably be white and blue whit small red and gold elements in a coat of arms. In high medieval era there probably was a Carniolan flag, but the flag itself (in medieval times) was not very important, the coat of arms was. The flag was used to show the coat of arms or a motive from a coat of arms, with time the flags became more developed and more important. Modern Carniolan flag has a pan-Slavic tricolor, we could say that they fused Carniolan and Slavic colours together, this flag was however contaminated by Slovenian quislings in 2ww. Edit: all ancient and medieval states originally only had a symbol/coat of arms. Original flags were just a background for a sigil/coat of arms. Flags of today are a modern thing.

There was no such thing as “Czech” flag in Czecho-Slovakia. It was a combined flag where blue triangle symbolised Slovakia and white and red stripes Czech lands. After dissolution, Czechs kept using the flag without Slovak approval and changed the narrative about the blue triangle. (Their excuse for using it was that they didn’t need to obey this federal request anymore, since the federation ceased to exist) Nowadays it symbolises land of Moravia. Also about the tree hilltops Tatra, Fatra and Matra. Matra lies in Hungary not Slovakia. We just kept it in our coat of arms for historical reasons.

Came to know only after few years the countries were separated to become the Czech Republic and Slovakia. My Professor for Power Electronics is from Slovakia and a Slovak German ! Love the nation, wishing to visit now since I live in the EU.
First of all, I would like to point out, that I am a huge fan of the channel. There is just one major problem. Elisabeth Bathory, or Báthory Erzsébet had nothing to do with today's Slovakia. She was a Hungarian noblewoman, just like all nobles from Upper Hungary (now Slovakia). At that time this land, was an integral part of the Kingdom of Hungary. Like it or not, these are the facts. Even the Hungarian capital was in the territory of today's Slovakia. It is Pozsony, or Bratislava as the slovaks call it. Even to this day, there is a huge ethnicly Hungarian part of Slovakia. I understand that the Slovaks learn that Bathory was Slovak, and their territory was always Slovak, etc.., I also understand that their government want to legitimize the country's "history". Which is a very tought work, when your nation is one of the youngest, if not THE youngest in Europe. So claiming that everything before the creation of Czechoslovakia was already Slovakian in this territory, even the Hungarian historical figures (such as Bathory) is more than problematic. You can belive it, but for this reason you can also believe in the Easter bunny. All in all, in a land, where Hungarians and Slovakians live next to each other, and their relationship is sometimes very problematic, these type of misinformation can create tensions between the two nation and can easily turn them against each other again.
"when your nation is one of the youngest, if not THE youngest in Europe" - yeah, if we're talking about the country itself, but Slovaks (Slavs) have been living here for a longer time than Hungarians. Hungarians came to Europe in the 9th century.
I completely agree with you that this is a very sensitive topic which can turn neighbors into enemies, but I have to disagree on that "slovaks are trying to legitimize their history" part. Slovaks are not a new nation, they've been here for ages and at no point in time were they Hungarians. The fact that we share our history doesn't make us the same.
@@Apollo9791 but it does. Our genes are identical because our ancestors didn't differentiate between Slavs and Hungarians, all were just people from the same kingdom. If you dig really deep into your family tree you would find Hungarians as well as Slovaks there. We are really the same people just speaking different language.

Elizabeth Bathory was Hungarian. The slovak coat of arms is also nearly identical to the Hungarian Coat of arms that pre dates Slovakia even being a concept. With the exclusion of the Sacred Crown of Hungary, and the Red and White stripes standing for the Arpad Dynasty. Also the origins for the double cross is from the Hungarian symbol of the World Tree. A symbol which was later christianized. It upsets me how low quality the Hungarian episode was. When the episodes of the countries that only exist because of trianon and the neutering of Hungary are given much better attention, and are attributed to things that were actually Hungarian. The least you could do is clarify why these countries exist, and where most of their history comes from.

Peter is awesome. Like the style of his videos. Yet, ... I think in many ways, he is holding back. Of course, also to appeal to a western audience. Think he found the perfect balance between eastern and western humor.
@@IndustrialParrot2816 Do you know how there is a rule about jokes, how they can be offensive until they are funny? Well in Slovakia, offensive is funny, which means our humor is basicaly challenge to how offended you can get people by it. Good stuff, not for everybody, but thats the intention anyway.
0:51 you call American football football even though it doesn’t involve your feet or a ball so who knows
What's really in a name? It's whats fascinating with in the various sport that counts.
They call it "hockey," but it doesn't involve any hockeys. ...I think. ...I don't know what a hockey is.
Look up how the name was made dude, it's not that hard.
Just one thing. American football can never be real football. Here's why: We can say that real football is the one that was made first. That's football (soccer) which was made from rugby. Or, we can say that the real football is the most popular one. Again, it's football ( soccer ) which is popular more than American one in all world except America itself.
Football tennis (nohejbal) was actually invented in the Czech Republic...

Fun fact: the Tatra, Matra and Fatra mountains are called that way because in the language of some tribe that predates, slav migration, Tatra means "the white mountain". Fatra means "the red mountain" and Matra means "the blue mountain". This helps to explain the colors in our flag.
It still amazes me how Slovenia and Slovakia have such similar flags without both flags having anything in common with each other (in terms of origins or meaning).
Wdym, both flags use colors of Pan-slavism
@@bigbumer5719Actually no. Slovenia's colours have nothing to do with Pan-Slavism. Slovenia uses the flag and the colour scheme of the Duchy of Carniola.
@@QuinlanLJ That is actually not true, originally Duchy of Carniola didnt have a flag, only a coat of arms. Later it used white-blue bicolor. White-blue-red was first raised in 1848 during springtime of nations, same time pan-slavism started gaining traction
@@bigbumer5719 "In 1836 Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria restored the original white color to the shield and recognized the white-blue-red combination as the official Carniolan color scheme."
Still has nothing to do with Pan-Slavism. The colours are taken directly from the Carniolan coat of arms that has existed long before Pan-Slavism was an idea.
Original Carniolan coat of arms was blue and white, but there were several changes made to it, they added red and gold (crown) elements to it.

The age-old question of what's so interesting on the right-hand side that Paul is looking at all the time
1) Elizabeth Bathory was a Hungarian noblewoman, nothing to do with Slovakia, so that record actually goes to Hungary.
2) 2:03 That is a picture of Saint Stephen I of Hungary, Hungary's first and most important king, founder of the Kingdom of Hungary and patron saint of Hungary and the Hungarian nation.
3) 2:33 The Coat of Arms of the 2nd flag is a Hungarian coat of arms.
This is exactly, why Kingdom of Hungary did not survived 20th century. Because you still thinks, that Kingdom of Hungary was full of Hungarians, everything was Hungarian, only Hungarians did everything etc.

Matra Mountains are in Hungary, yet they appear in both the Slovak and Hungarian COA. Great flag video and great Slovakia Episode! I tend to think of Slovakia, formerly Upper Hungary, as the Central European Lake Tahoe-type country.
Exactly. Some mistakes were easily avoided just by doing simple research on Wikipedia:)
I once got an East Caribbean quarter as change from a vending machine. It makes a different sound when dropped. I think it’s made out of aluminum.

Fun(sad)fact:The hills and the cross on the crest are the same what is on the Hungarian crest.☹️
I don't think so, I believe Slovaks used the double cross since the arrival of Cyril and Methodius, which happened before the ancestors of Hungarians came here. I know this is a very sensitive topic for us Slovaks and also for Hungarians, so please let me know if I'm incorrect.
First correction: The hills are - Tatra, Matra and Fatra. Only Matra is located in modern Hungary and a lot of Slovaks lived in that area (3 hills represented mountainos/upper part of Kingdom of Hungary = nowadays Slovakia) Hills were added to the coat of arms by Wenceslaus III., Slavic king.
Second correction: Red shield and double-cross are from (Slavic) Nitra principality, used also by Stephen I. who has a connection with Nitra.
It is old heritage and of course it was (and still is) on Hungarian coat of arms, because Slovaks were part of Kingdom of Hungary.

We don't learn she was Slovak. Even from the name it is clear to all native Slovaks that it's a Hungarian name don't worry.
"when your nation is one of the youngest, if not THE youngest in Europe" - yeah, if we're talking about the country itself, but Slovaks (Slavs) have been living here for a longer time than Hungarians. Hungarians came to Europe in the 9th century.
@@kalyptro123 it's not a problem, we have a common past, there will always be a few misunderstandings
It's so sad you didn't pay more attention to Slovakian Nature & historical sites. It's worth the whole episode. Our contry is amazing because in it's small terrirory, you can found a lot of geomorphological variety. Therefore we had amazing mountains, castles on a hills and even old volcanoes :)

The least you could do is clarify why these countries exist, and where most of their history comes from.
i agree on the quality. it would be best if old EP's can get a remake to the current quality standard.
It is the truth!
