Following using rice berry face serum by litttleextrra for three weeks, here's what I experienced:
Benefits: It effectively softens and evens out the skin, giving it a gentle glow. I've also seen a reduction in my genetic dark circles (avoiding the eye area is recommended). It has also helped diminish dark spots on my sister's skin.
Cons: Personally, mine is dry and dull skin, and using the serum every day exacerbated my dryness.
I advise using it thrice a week along with a good moisturizer to prevent dryness. I haven't seen any noticeable improvement in tan or skin tone issues in first 3 weeks.
Update after 2 months: After almost two months of consistent use, I regard it my holy grail face serum. It has started showing positive results. My skin glows, dark circles reduced, and dark spots reduced a lot. So patience is key when using this face serum.

This riceberry face serum contains the real goodness of Vitamin C. It quickly gets absorbed by the skin and is completely non-greasy. My skin feels refreshed after applying this serum. I use it twice daily for that extra freshness and glow.

One thing I've noticed about Skinceuticals and their dupes (Timeless, Maelove, Dr Brenner) is they have a large amount of ethoxydiglycol in them, aka Transcutol. This allows the alcohol soluble ferulic acid to be dissolved, but also it's a powerful skin penetration agent and I'm not sure you'd get nearly the same vitamin C penetration without it. Also, whatever I put on afterwards seems to get very good penetration rather than sit on top of the skin, especially if it is alcohol soluble like Tazarotene.

The only thing I dislike about The Ordinary's 8% Vit C with 2% AA is the oil based formulation which means it must be applied after any water based serums. When I open a new one: I use the new dropper to put 1/2 the contents into the clean old bottle, tightly screw on the new bottle’s cap to it and refrigerate. Top the fresh bottle with the dropper and use daily till empty. Then grab the second 1/2 from the fridge. Extended the life (and $ spent) of a bottle to the last drop for me! Also, I don’t keep all my “potions and lotions“ in the bathroom as it’s tiny and shared by multiple people. Gets to hot too many times a day! Might be overkill? My rosacea and eczema prone skin HATES THEM - even the derivatives cause irritation. There are so many other antioxidants and my skin tolerates many of them really well, so I long long ago gave up on vitamin c for myself. I don't need vitamin c and am happy with the ingredients I can incorporate, that make my skin feel soft/comfortable. Irritation in of itself causes aging, so why would I persevere trying any more to make it work for me? I don't and don't feel I'm missing out. I use a retinoid, azelaic acid and alpha arbutin for pigment and collagen, with a host of antioxidants to preserve my skin in as much as topicals can (plus spf of course lol). Best wishes.

Thank you for this !!! You may have just saved me from burning my skin again. I tried a free sample of Tula’s Vit C and it burned my face so badly that I could barely tolerate simple moisturizer for almost a week. I was considering ordering a “brightening” kit from PC but am still nervous about using VC again. You just helped me decided to just say no. Thank you!!!

Best vitamin C for my skin is the Timeless Serum I could literally see the good results. Idk if it helps anyone else but wow. Plus it comes in a glass opaque pump that protects it from contamination. I was benefits in around 5 or 6 weeks. 😁

I am so surprised to see this video from this Doctor who years back actually made a video how vit C is good for nothing for us. I commented than with many other women to challenge her and she was so sceptical towards our love for it. I love my vit C used it for 20 years.

Vitamin C is the only skincare ingredient I never use and ultimately avoid because it never seemed to do much of anything for me, and would cause immediate stinging and burning upon application. I even tried this very same Timeless serum a year or two ago and…. Nope. Just stings. I’ve always had much better luck with skin-brightening/evening skin-tone with use of AHAs/BHAs, retinoids, niacinamide, licorice root, alpha arbutin, etc. Overall I don’t think Vitamin C likes or benefits my skin. It’s just simply not worth the immediate stinging and burning reaction for me. Too irritating, and I don’t even have the world’s most sensitive skin.

PLEASE make a video about the specific chemical processes that occur with the skin in terms of ascorbic acid absorption. Include why some Derms say it absorbs and some say it doesn't. 🙏

ScinCeuticals is my favorite but I’m not sure for the reasons people think. I live in a dry, heavily polluted climate and I have very dehydrated skin. Many serums don’t really help because my skin has more water in it then the surrounding environment… I have some reactiveness to oils as well… too much occlusion can cause me to have a very rosacea like reaction. This serum seems to have a good balance of hydration and moisture that just packs a punch underneath a moisturizer. That balance I believe has reduced the amount of visible texture and comedones maybe because my skin isn’t overproducing oil to compensate for the dryness and dehydration. I have melasma & I can’t say it fades spots drastically like hydroquinone, but it overall has a brightening effect and seems to blur them in a way that makes them stand out less. I would say it is more for maintenance and preventing spots from worsening. It’s cosmetically elegant and feels very nourishing, it doesn’t seem to instantly evaporate which most serums seem to do on me. I appreciate its simplicity as well. It’s a luxury item for sure and if you’re looking for something to make a huge difference this might not be the it thing. But if you struggle with finding a serum that is hydrating and moisturizing without evaporating too fast , and if you need hydration but struggle with finding an essence that’s appropriate for you, then it’s worth a try. I also should add I do think that the free radical protection is there… that’s hard to explain but I notice a difference. When I’m without my serum I think I can handle it but then my skin suffers. I’m not sure why but it’s pretty obvious to my family because I get eczema, and dermatitis etc. In addition it’s a great alternative to prescriptions when pregnant because most actives like tretinoin, hydroquinone, and cystamine can’t be used during pregnancy.

Interesting topic. I have used Skinceuticals vitamin C serum since it first came out, mainly because of skincare articles suggesting it along with Retin A and sunscreen, all used for probably 30 years now? I don’t really know if it makes a difference but I do have nice skin for someone who’s 65 years old outside many hours a day in Southern California riding horses. At this point I’m afraid to stop, lol! P.S. No facial skin cancers either.

Thank you once again dr dray! I have been struggling for YEARS to make my skin accept vitamin c and vitamin a because I thought that was the bare minimum (+sunscreen obv). This is the first time I’m hearing that it vit c may not be worthwhile for everyone. I can let go of trying and maybe focus on vit a only…and maybe I won’t be able to do that either. Skincare can become kind of a nightmare tbh. Anyway, thank you for helpful content!

I started with “The Ordinary” and I liked it a lot. However, I changed to “Timeless” because I thought it was better… but the smell made me stop using it. Now, probably, I’ll try “Drunk Elephant” or “Paula’s Choice” because I want to try them, and I’ll return to “The Ordinary”.

Best C E F serum is the one that I do myself every month, and keep it in the fridge.
After testing almost all(except Skinceutical because I could not agree with the price...), I got myself in the DYI category for the first time.
I've been using the one done at home for more months now, and is a custom that I plan to keep for a long time.
By doing it every month, I can change the percent of vit.C. As there are some months(in the winter) were I need only 10% C in the evening, and some months(in the summer) when I use the 20% C serum, in the morning, right under the SPF.

I find that my vitamin c serum helps.a lot with my hyperpigmentation from acne! I use the Paulas choice super booster and its the only one I found that actually works for me (after trying many others). it also has ferulic acid and vitamin E). I try to use it immediately after washing my face and let it sit for as long as possible before using my other serums and moisturizer to help it stay stabilized and absorb on its own before mixing in other products (ordinary niacidimide + zinc, Vichy 89 hyaluronic acid, a Cosrx gel moisturizer and keils barrier repair cream in my extra dry spots around my nose and mouth). I love it and have rebought it many times!

Loved this video! I've been using the Versed Stroke of Brilliance Brightening Serum every other morning for years now. It has reduced the uneven tone and texture of my skin more than any other product ever has and I have a feeling that has more to do with the licorice root extract than the Vitamin C.

Timeless works for me too. It has L. ascorbic acid, ferulic acid to stabilize it and vitamin E. There is a possibility that it is breaking me out in very small pimples in areas that I don’t usually break out. Other products I use take care of that. I’m considering using a product that has tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THDC) in it. If I stop getting the tiny pimples I may stick with it.

I have used Vitamin C serums over the years but did give up on them because I saw no noticeable difference. I tried the Drunk Elephant one when it was all the rage, I finished more than one bottle. It's so expensive and always oxidized. One day I said to myself why am I using this stuff when it's not doing anything? I've also tried the Paula's Choice booster and The Ordinary's various vitamin C serums. Nothing has made a noticeable difference in my skin. I am curious about trying the new PC vitamin c moisturizer because it's not an extra step.
