  • I love the 16-bit era of gaming; in many ways, it was a transitional period that brought us the continuation of IPs, some brutally aggressive commercials, and some of the best soundtracks you would ever hear in the early 90s, at least in video gaming. Today I will talk about the top 10 highest selling SNES games!

Yoshi’s Island was the first video game I ever bought for a girl. She was the daughter of one of the pharmacists I worked with at the hospital. I called every store in the city until I found a copy in a Game Exchange on the wrong side of town. It wasn’t a romantic gesture or anything, her mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer and she needed a pick me up.

My local bowling alley had the Nintendo F-Zero/Super Mario World combined arcade cabinet. I can't describe the anticipation that thing caused for the release of the SNES. If I remember correctly, you could only play something like 3 levels of each game. Yet every Saturday we waited our turns to pump in quarters.

Some folks do seem to think counting pack in titles is cheating despite the fact that a pack in is still technically a copy sold as far as sales data is concerned.
Taking that into account, I think you might have to revisit this one at some point, but I'd imagine research into what was a pack in at some point is going to likely be extensive if you try to account for ALL regions.
Hell, in this video alone you mentioned a few that I didn't even realize were pack in titles at one point!
This is likely not all inclusive, but I did find a forum that was tracking all the variants of SNES console boxes. I don't trust Wikipedia as several of the games that are known pack in titles with photographic evidence are not marked as such on their list of the best selling games.
Anyway, here's a list of pack in titles if we're going off of US bundles along with the specific model or set it was part of:
-SMW (Super Set, the original pack in title at launch)
    -DKC (Donkey Kong Set)
-Super Game Boy (SGB Set, technically not a game but tossing it in for the sake of inclusion)
-Mario All Stars (Mario Set w/SMW)
-Mario Paint (updated Super Set w/SMW)
-Super Mario Kart (updated Super Set w/SMW)
-Star Fox (updated Super Set w/SMW)
-Yoshi's Island (one of MANY Control Sets, repacked later for the SNS-101)
-Zelda: ALttP (one of MANY Control Sets, repacked later for the SNS-101 Control Deck as a Target Exclusive)
-Kirby Super Star (SNS-101, Target Exclusive)
-Tetris Attack (SNS-101, Toys R Us Exclusive)
-Stunt Race FX, NCAA Basketball, and NHL Stanley Cup (all three were part of the Big Score Bundle)
-Super Tennis, Super Play Action Football, and F-Zero (all three were part of the Competition Set, F-Zero was also a Target Exclusive Control Set at one point)
-Ken Griffey Jr. Presents MLB (Home Run Bundle)
    -Killer Instinct (KI Bundle)
-Super Metroid (one of MANY Control Sets)
That's at least a whopping 19 games to cross off the sales chart if we're going off of officially released bundles that were made by Nintendo, and this is BEFORE we leave the US. I know there was a Mexican market bundle that came with Super SF2 and SMW, so realistically speaking I don't know if we're going to be able to knock out every single instance of a pack in title.
However, if we cross those 20 off the list, we'd be looking at a top ten along these lines. Keep in mind this list DOES have some Japanese exclusives on it, so the list is going to likely look very different than what some of you might expect!
#1-Street Fighter 2 Turbo (Questionable as this was apparently a pack in in Europe according to other comments)
    #2-Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie's Double Trouble
    #3-Final Fantasy 6
    #4-Dragon Quest 6 (Japanese Exclusive)
    #5-Dragon Quest 5 (Japanese Exclusive)
    #6-Chrono Trigger
    #7-Final Fantasy 5 (Japanese Exclusive)
    #8-Super Mario RPG
    #9-Pilotwings
    #10-SimCity
#11/Honorable Mention-Secret of Mana (this obviously shifts up to tenth if we drop SF2T)
Now, I'm a little iffy on this list as I could have absolutely SWORN Super Mario RPG was a pack in at some point, but that could just be the Mandela Effect in action. If it WAS a pack in, then it was likely part of a retailer bundle that wasn't technically authorized by Nintendo.
EDIT: Following some extra research, apparently one of the early releases of the Model 101 console had a rendered 3D image of Mario on the box. The image in question specifically came from Mario RPG, so that's likely where the false memory is coming from.
With that said, two things jump out at me:
-We once again see that Dragon Quest is an absolute monster in terms of sales as DQ5/6 make this list on Japanese sales alone
-RPGs dominate the list, once again likely due to Japanese sales as the genre wasn't quite mainstream yet over here (this is still before FF7 mind you)
Honestly, if you can track accurate data for pack in titles as I feel Wikipedia is questionable on every known official pack in, it might be rather interesting to see how this plays out on other systems as well.
    For a quick breakdown:
Doing this on the NES straight up knocks out SMB, Duck Hunt, and SMB3 from the top three and leads to some surprising games making a best seller list on the NES.
A list excluding pack ins on the Game Boy? Not so much. That only knocks out Tetris and Link's Awakening, the second of which doesn't crack the top ten in either case. To the surprise of no one Pokémon Gen 1 and Gen 2 take the top slots if Tetris is eliminated.
For the Genesis, Wikipedia had ZERO info on pack in titles (once again showing why I don't 100% trust them on this lol) which was shocking as I straight up KNOW they had all the mainline Sonic games bundled at one point or another, as well as a 6 in 1 cart. If you're going to do a similar list for the Genesis/Mega Drive, extensive research is going to be needed.

I wanted to love it so bad, but the game is such a slog. The music is boring, the dungeon puzzles are tedious (that ice level suuuuucked), and overall, I just didn't like it that much. @@Fortefyre exactly. I think it's a lot of hype around the SNES because it's so coveted these days. I look at a lot of SNES games from major franchises, and I'd rather play the NES or Genesis version in a lot of cases. SNES is sluggish and there are some great games but I don't really like the sound chip that much either. Most of the time if I'm playing an SNES game, it's the msu-1 versions with real music.

    • @Enigma1788
      @Enigma1788 Месяц назад

Maybe so, but as far as official sales figures are concerned, a pack in title bundled with a console is a copy sold🤷‍♂
It's also a practice that has mostly fallen out of favor as it would always bump a console price up by $50 (and we're talking $50 in the late 80s/early 90s, so that price bump was significant)
I say mostly due to the fact that the norm for close to 30 years now has been to not pack a game in at launch so they can squeeze the console under a certain price point. Realistically, you weren't buying a Switch at $300 or a PS5 at $500 on launch night. The system needs a game after all! That said, not having a pack in title does give a little bit of flexibility to the consumer, even if game selection is very limited at launch.
With that being said, pack ins do still exist. Sometimes the copy is physical, more often than not it's digital nowadays. You tend to see them either around the holidays, or a year or two after launch following a price cut, that way they can still squeeze the whole thing in at a under a certain price point.
And honestly, with how often it has been packed in on holiday bundles, don't be surprised to see Mario Kart 8 as the top seller for the Switch once it's all said and done 😆
