I say this as one of the biggest Kingery supporters you’ll ever meet: At some point in the summer of 2019, the league realized he couldn’t hit a high fastball. Maybe that was skill based, maybe that was because the organization changed his swing to have more launch, I don’t know. But he struggled mightily after that for years. As the creator said, he changed his swing in the 2022-23 offseason to be more flat like it was years prior, and he raked in 2023 spring training and probably deserved to make the Phillies out of camp but didn’t. There were also two different times in the summer of 2023 different Phillies battled slumps and injuries while Kingery was hot in AAA where he probably deserved a look again but never got one. I have no clue if he is ever going to have success at the MLB level again, the percentages would tell you no, but he has deserved another chance and it’s obvious the Phillies have given up on him. Hopefully they change their mind. If not, I hope another MLB team gives him a chance
Fuck Joe Girradi it's the same reason they never played Moniak but trotted out the corpse of Andrew McCutchen, who got hot before the trade deadline, so they could finish the season .500
He was not good in triple a and had a career high strikeouts and then blamed it on him coming back to early. Hopefully he does something productive with his last chance, but i promise he will not be in the majors on opening day.
As a Phillies fan I’ve never stopped rooting for kingery to figure it out and atleast make it as a utility guy who’s first off the bench, but fyck man his stats have still been god awful even after playing in the minors the last two years
Lmao dude his second season (after they changed his swing) was his best by a mile. And they asked him to play like two positions as a rookie. This is just a bullshit narrative
I've followed his career since he was a freshman at Arizona. While he hasn't proved yet that he can hit to the standard of a mlb regular, I don't see why he isn't valued more within the game as a utility player. He can give you gold glove caliber defense at four positions and competent defense at two more, steal a base -- something like 29 of 30 in Triple A last year -- and hit some HR's. But the Phillies signed Whit Merrifield to do exactly what Kingery does, so it would be great if he could catch on with another organization. He was arguably the best player in the minors in 2017 when you consider his gold glove defense at second, and one of the two best players in Florida in spring training 2018 (along with Acuna), so if he can just find a comfort zone with some team maybe he can produce like that again.
Spring Training and the Minors mean nothing if you can't get it done in the Majors. I've always liked Kingery but there's a reason he got passed up and Matt Klentak will always be a fucking idiot for signing him to that contract. Doesn't help at all that Gabe didn't let him get comfortable in a position as a young guy and covid definitely has effected him long term. Middleton went out and signed Trea Turner and Bryson Stott turned into Bryson Stott.
Him and his twin bro played us in the state championship in hs 2010. They were decent but even at the hs level they didn't stand out for their team behind Cron and Alexander. Props for sure for him getting getting to the bigs...but to say next superstar thats wild.@@yawn1025
Gold glove caliber defense where? Because his defensive metrics in the infield are nothing more than average, and he has shown to be a better outfielder than infielder so far. Also he only stole 24 bases last year, and even though he hit a handful of homers last year, his .156 ISO is still around 15 points lower than the major league average. At least Merrifield's wRC+ in only 7% lower than the average major league hitter, while Kingery is doing 19% less while in Triple A.
Hiura just couldn't get enough contact to survive in the bigs. It was pretty clear in his advanced metrics in 2019 that he was a major regression candidate and while I was definitely pulling for him, it seemed like he had a mountain to climb
It must be super weird to play a season with no fans or anyone really other than necessary people for the game at the stadium. Almost eerie feeling watching back on that time in 2020
The craziest thing about this videos is I saw an old instagram account today and it had a scout comment that said “like pedroia but with more potential”. Crazy. I JUST SAW THE PEDROIA PART OMG😭😭
I have no idea if he will become a day to day major leaguer, but I'd be willing to bet good money that he winds up rising through the ranks as a coach one day.
I watched this guy in AA and AAA and really liked him. I described him as a “ball player.” I played with a guy like that too, who just seemed like he grinded with everything he did. Just unfortunate how the Phillies handled him.
Used to be one of my favorite players. He was a top prospect, supposed to be Dustin Pedroia, but he was never a super prospect, he was never hyped up like Acuna or Vlad Jr.
I'm a Phils fan and I gotta admit the franchise didn't do much to help this kid at all. They expected too much from him early in his development and he got punished for not being able to handle it.
There’s something more to it tho when you go from next superstar to no at-bats in over a 1,000 days. You can disappoint projections and still just be a serviceable player even if you don’t meet the superstar expectations. But something much more to it to go from Superstar, to an average player to actually not even taking an at-bay in over 3 years. Something more to it than what’s on the surface.
Man as a Phillies fan, I def thought Scotty Kings was gonna be a corner stone for years to come after 2019. Unfortunately, that was as good as it got and even though he’s having a decent ST so far, it would take a miracle for him to make the opening day roster with the entire infield set and utility players like Whit and Sosa already on the roster.
I agree, but hopefully he can use this spring to make it somewhere else. As you said he can play in multiple key positions and be a decent defender in a utility role.
I think if he's able to stay healthy and maintain the same drive to improve his game he still has the talent to perform well enough to earn him another shot in the majors. When you think about how many kids get drafted each year compared to the number of roster spots available at the top level it's easy to imagine the pressure being the major hurdle that so many guys are never able to overcome regardless of how gifted they may be physically.
I've made a video about him! It wasn't about his rise and fall although that would be a good idea. It was about how he hit .247 for 4 straight seasons, the most in MLB history! I have a list of 10 or so vids I want to make next but I'll add his rise and fall to it because like you said he was a monster and then disappeared fairly quickly. ruclips.net/video/RHS0iwLL_gM/видео.html
Phillies development staff forced him to develop a power oriented swing. His whole career and the year he broke out in the minors he was a line drive guy who just got stronger and stronger and the Phillies got greedy. Once he got to the higher levels it hurt him because he had a hole in his swing where upper heat could eat. Mentally that create another hole, breaking balls down. Just awful work from the old regime and their development staff
You missed 1 MAJOR aspect to this story, and it’s that the Phillies don’t have a place in the field for him, so they forced this young kid to be a “jack of all trades” player. This 100% screwed him up as it never let him get settled in. He’s a natural middle infielder, but was forced to bounce between 2nd, 3rd, Shortstop, and Center Field. Add to this, the Gabe Kaepler years were HORRENDOUS for the team, and then the Phillies went on a spending spree bringing in big name guys in Jean Segura and Didi Gregorius, he was never really given a fair chance. Looking at the 2024 Phillies, I don’t see a roster spot for him either (as the Phillies have decided to keep both Castellanos and Schwarber, of which, I believe one has to go). The infield is set with Bohm (3B), Turner (SS), Stott (2B), and Harper (1B). The outfield is interesting, as I would imagine it will be Schwarber (RF), Rojas (CF) - though this is still a battle between him and Pache from what I hear, and Marsh (LF). Castellanos would be DH. So, unless someone goes down, I don’t foresee a spot opening up for Kingery anywhere, unfortunately. Though, to be fair, I do think a change of scenery might do him some good at this point.
@@3-0Greenlight haha hey man you managed to make an interesting video based on a player who I never found very interesting and I'm a die hard Phillies fan...so well done. I do think the Phillies must've played a pretty significant role in his decline or lack of any real rise. The regime they had running things when they signed Kingery did a terrible job developing players. They had Kingery totally change his swing and overall approach at the plate and it sure as hell didn't help him
i mean he had 2 hits on 2 ab and homered yesterday against the Marlins…i was wondering what happened to him as i sat at the b team game of the split squad (phillies @ tigers) i know they declined his option but what does that mean going forward since they invited him to train? like no other teams were interested? kids got some life left in him…i’d like to see the phillies pick him back up but i don’t think he can take the spot back from scott so he’d be second string,
He has done well so far, even homered off the Jays in his first at bat. But he's done very well in spring training before. For his career he has an .880 OPS in about 100 games. Yes the Phillies did decline his option! But they brought him in as a non-roster invitee, so we'll have to see what happens in Philly. As you said he would not take the second base spot away from Stott, but he has great defensive coverage so maybe he could find a gig on the team elsewhere, if not another team should surely give him a shot.
I think if he tries to change his swing back into a more line drive focus rather than uppercut home run power, then he could potentially make a name for himself again. Whether that be 2 WAR again I don't know. But getting back to the big leagues seems possible to me.
I think you exaggerate Kingery's prospect status. He was never, ever, ever, "the next superstar." The Phillies move was baffling. "Next superstar?" Yeah, I don't think so. No 2B/3B is ever the next superstar.
Matt Olson shouldn't really be included in the Braves signing stars pre-Arb/Arb. They traded for him during the last year of his Arb years and then signed him long term.
He's never going to be elite. Even yet today, his 85.9 mph exit velocity in Triple A last year was is around 2.5 mph less than the major league average. He has never hit the ball perticulaty great, and wasn't even average in the exit velocity category till in the majors in 2019. Might he be solid to good someday? Maybe, but I doubt he'll ever be elite. Even a guy like Andrelton Simmons was never truly elite, and both he and Kingery have similar offensive production, but Simmons was truly elite only in defense, but was never the greatest offensive producer, and Kingery doesn't hold a match to the defensive greatness that Simmons provided.
That's a good analysis on Scott Kingery. Now I'm curious as what happened to Nick Senzel, the second overall pick in the 2016 Draft. Dude hasn't even been a league average hitter nor defender. EDIT: Actually, come to think of it, the top _15_ overall picks that year were ALMOST ALL horrible. How could that possibly happen?
That was a historically bad draft overall, not just the top 15. I think like 8 of the top 10 players to come out of that draft are relievers. I read an analysis someone did last year and oh boy it was a bad year. As a Phillies fan I always lamented the fact that that was the year we had the #1 overall selection, when so many other years had legit #1 talents in them.
You're right it's all full, and the Phillies have utility players already. I don't see him making the roster but maybe he can use his good spring so far as a way to get a contract elsewhere.
I honestly hope he is our bat off the bench this year and is able to help us make a run in October. Like the video said organization did him wrong with all the mind games about where he would play, changing his swing when the launch angle BS took over the league, and then never giving him proper time to heal from injuries. On top of that he had two dip shit managers in Kapler and Girardi who hated young guys and would jerk him around game in and game out over the smallest things like going hitless in 1 game or committing and error in another. If he did that he would get benched for 2 games and then get sent out to a different position 5 games in a row and the pressure started to get to him. They did the same shit with Alec Bohm, luckily Bohm only had to deal with Girardi and he got fired before he could really screw Bohm up too much.
Philly will cut him, only to see my Braves pick him up and turn him into a really good utility player. Kevin Seitzer does wonders as a hitting coach for The Braves.
His defensive ability/versatility has a lot of value but he’s so bad offensively (outside of a couple months in 2019) that it almost cancels it out. If he could be just an ok hitter, he’d be a good guy to have on your roster. I do think people’s expectations for him were way too high though. As a Phillies fan I thought he could be good but never really saw superstar potential.
Sounds like a change of scenery would benefit him. Sometimes a new set of coaches with a new set of eyes on him could work out. I hope he finds his way .
This has nothing at all to do with baseball but I can't envision a single scenario in which someone would tell another person, "You know what would be best for you? Staying in Philadelphia." Unless, of course, they absolutely hate that person.
I mean highly touted prospect isn’t a guarantee for anything. Crazy how much hype some of these guys get just to fizzle out and forgotten. Scouts=people who think they know things, but know jack all! Paid Guessing Experts!
While I agree the Phillies messed up by changing his swing and not sticking him in one position, Kingery is just flat out not that talented. He definitely has value as a super utility defender who can play multiple positions well, but he can't hit for squat. He always reminds me of Cody Asche, who I thought would be a solid MLB 3B, but was never able to learn to hit big league pitching.
Kingery’s 2017 power numbers were most certainly inflated playing with AA Reading, whose home stadium is a home run paradise. I also believe Kingery’s 2019 power numbers inflated as well due to that being the year of the juiced baseballs. Nonetheless, I always liked him. Wish it panned out, but clearly didn’t. The Phillies did all they could not to promote him last season. Going as far as to hire Drew Ellis literally off the streets to take a bench spot over Kingery. The organization appears to be completely done with him, only keeping him around with the hopes a good spring will entice trade candidates to take a flier on him. Would be nice if he somehow found his way back on the 40-man roster and found a way to contribute, but that’s a dream at this point.
Reds should pick him back up I've always like kingery and the reds love giving guys a major league shot who normally wouldn't or shouldn't get it why not try Scott in the outfield we need another righty out there anyway and he can field
Haven't heard that name in a minute lol. Definitely do a Rusney Castillo video. I was all over these guys in fantasy. And good video. You have earned a sub my good sir.
The Phillies were poorly run during the Matt Klentak era. They were awful on drafting and player development. So Scott was another victim of the dark era of the Phillies.
actually I believe rusney Castillo got the biggest deal before playing in the majors lmaooo dude signed a seven year 72.5 million dollar contract and was a bust
As a Phillies fan, I never had hope in Scott Kingery. He came around when Phillies were trying to find themselves after Ruben Amaro Jr. Took over as owner and knew when people we hyping him as the savior of the Phillies that he wouldn't be much of anything and the more I watched the more I got pissed off at his approach as he seemed to me to be a free swinger which is why he has the high strike-out rate

😤
Matt Olson shouldn't really be included in the Braves signing stars pre-Arb/Arb. They traded for him during the last year of his Arb years and then signed him long term.
Not true, Matt Olson has 6.103 of service time, so the Braves signed him with 2 years remaining arbitration.
guys gonna leave us and be elite
He's shown before what he's capable of! Might need a change of scenery
I remember seeing Senzel as a rookie in 2019 and immediately thought he’d blossom into a star. He just never materialized.
That's a good idea for another one of these videos!
One gargantuan difference between Trout and Kingery starting slow. Trout was 19, Kingery was 24.
Other than that, carry on.
Well, good on him making some bank at least. Sometimes you hear about athletes betting on themselves and losing, Kingery cashed in his chips and won.
Haha yup
What position is he playing with the infield solidified?
You're right it's all full, and the Phillies have utility players already. I don't see him making the roster but maybe he can use his good spring so far as a way to get a contract elsewhere.
The Phillies screwed this kid up badly. They changed his swing multiple times and wanted him to hit homers.
Kapler messed him up. He is a product of the Phillies when they struggled to develop and train.
It hasn't been 1000 days since his last MLB appearance in June 2022. That's only 638 days.
"At Bat"
We wanted him to be Utley so bad
He sure looked like he could become a solid ballplayer, this spring seems like his last chance with the club...
He is a victim of coaching. They tried to add more power into his swing and it ruined him.
Lmao, people still believe in the juiced balls? 😂😭😂
Dude, people atill believe in kingery@@MrHunterbg
@@MrHunterbgmlb admitted it bruh lol
Shoulda got the jab. He woulda been a HOFer
I’m usually good detecting sarcasm. But there’s an extraordinary amount of delusion out there in these times.
Reds should pick him back up I've always like kingery and the reds love giving guys a major league shot who normally wouldn't or shouldn't get it why not try Scott in the outfield we need another righty out there anyway and he can field
Not to mention being a red would definitely help his power numbers offensively. Look at what Drury did here
I would like to hear from Scott and then decide
Max Clark is a similar story to follow.
Teams discovered he would chase
Yup, the curse for a lot of players unfortunately
Nobody wants to be remembered as a flash in pan. That is why he is still out there trying
It would be a tough way to be remembered for sure.
The track record of buying these guys out of their arbitration years is interesting. As a fan of baseball hopefully Chourio can break the trend
High risk high reward! I'm thinking about doing another video like this with Rusney Castillo, he was paid about triple Kingery was...
Haven't heard that name in a minute lol. Definitely do a Rusney Castillo video. I was all over these guys in fantasy.
And good video. You have earned a sub my good sir.
Phillies already has reached out to acuña jr if he wants to sign with the Phillies
The Phillies were poorly run during the Matt Klentak era. They were awful on drafting and player development. So Scott was another victim of the dark era of the Phillies.
The Phillies felt a lot different during that time for sure.
@@3-0Greenlight Blown leads galore. 2021 Phillies had the most blown saves in a season for a short while.
actually I believe rusney Castillo got the biggest deal before playing in the majors lmaooo dude signed a seven year 72.5 million dollar contract and was a bust
@3:12 Some people should not be allowed to have kids.
Anyone remember elijah dukes? Lastings millege?
I'm not familiar with them but I'm gonna check em out.
Isn't Dukes in prison...again.
He made 24 million I dont feel for him at all
He's not asking you to feel bad for him
was anyone thinking scott kingery would be a superstar?
scott kingery mentioned‼️‼️ what the fuck is a successful prospect⁉️⁉️
Prospects are so hit and miss, currently looking at my Nate Pearson jersey as I type this FUDIKJDC)S
He’s making a comeback mark my words
Ok. Marked them 👍🏽
We'll come back to this comment at the end of the season 😤
I don't remember hearing his name before. Weird. It's unfortunate how the Phillies ruined his career, though.
Long Covid. Bahaha. Dopes.
You're the only idiot i see here
Number 1 reason……..Gabe Kapler
It was all cuz I picked him up in fantasy baseball. Sorry Scott.
Ah man not the fantasy baseball curse :(
Waste of a ton of money
Yup :(
As a Phillies fan, I never had hope in Scott Kingery.
Being hyped as the next Utley/Pedroia is big shoes to fill for sure...
Dude was my god damn enemy on The Show 17. Every god damn time I started against the Fighting Phils this dude was taking me yard
haha he was a beast back in the day on the Show
High A, not single A plus
Good catch, fixing that in my new vid!
@@3-0Greenlight all good! Looking forward to the next one!
Phillies fucked Scott up
Could have definitely of been the case
Acuna wants a new contract
Trade acuna for 2 star players and 3 star prospects
2 words. Gabe kapler
