This train inspired Walt Disney. Meet the man behind it | Folsom Valley Railway owner Terry Gold

In this episode, I spend a day with Terry Gold, the owner and conductor of the Folsom Valley Railway. Terry has been operating the train daily since he acquired the railroad in 1990. The Cricket is a 12 inch oil-fired narrow gauge steam engine built in 1950. The train operates year-round at Folsom Lions Park in Folsom, California.

Hello! I watched your video as the locomotive featured has a connection with ones I am involved with. What was not told in it, and maybe was not known, is the origin of the locomotive which you may find interesting. The Cricket started life as an Ottaway locomotive built by the Chance Company which now exists as the Chance Amusement Co in Wichita Kansas. It was sold to Erich Thomsen, as stated, in November of 1950 and was indeed a coal fired engine at the time. At some point in its life, Mr. Thomsen then added the features as explained here of the domes, cab, smokestack and headlight. You can see the Ottaway branding on the Smoke Box door on the front of the locomotive.
There are several other Ottaway locomotives of this size and scale operating both commercially and privately. A commercial one of note is the WF&P outside Saint Louis Missouri who operate on a mile of track.
Interesting video. I hope the train can stay in California where it can remain as a public attraction.

I'm one of our superintendents of motive power at the WF&P as you mentioned, however we have not owned an Ottaway since 2004. Our ottaway #205 was sold to a member who restored it for his private railroad and can be found by looking up the Northview and Frisco railroad here on youtube. We own a 1907 built International 4-4-0 which the original ottaway was reverse engineered from. The little 171, or grandma as we call her, is down now getting running gear work done but we hope to get her running soon.

@@OttawaySteam all good, your information on the ottaway featured here was very interesting to learn. It does bother me he claims he's the only railroad of his type in the country as we are another 12 inch gauge railroad.

My father and uncle brought the train to Folsom and install the tracks and building and ran it the first 10 years before selling it. Good memories, their names George and Lou sherman

I rode "The Cricket" when it was in Tilden Park. Every trip my parents would make to the Bay Area, we made it a point to stop and ride. I have many photos of my times there, plus took my daughter there too. Wasn't mentioned in this video, but one Winter there was a mud slide and the Cricket went down a slope and had to be recovered after that. Needless to say, the engine house was moved to another more stable location after that.

The original cricket Was built out of an Ottaway locomotive It was damaged in a landslide. I believe in the early 60s. It was in The book little railways of the world, I do not know how much of the original Ottaway is left anymore after the accident

I grew up in the area and didn't know this was here until about 2020. I parked near the baseball fields close by to ride along the bike path and saw the tracks. It probably wasn't operating at the time because of covid and I assumed it didn't operate at all because I somehow had never even known it was there.
I worked for the previous owner Milon Thorley in 87,88, he was a Great Man, the Cricket was a real joy to run as a coal burner.

This was filmed last month! The train is still operating, although it’s currently closed for track maintenance. Should be back open in a couple weeks.

Yes, it is. The City of Folsom is being given the first right of refusal to buy the railroad. If they pass, the engines will likely be sold to a private party.

I was a local. I remember taking my kids on that RR. He would give you tips to set up your camera. If the city is smart they will buy it. They can always sell the Steamer and switch to a Gasoline powered engine later. But to get the grandfathered rails and the ADA exemption is huge. If I was still local I would love to buy it and operate it for another 20 years. Someday I may build a backyard RR but it will be a hobby not a commercial.

The 4-6-0 loco is not a 10 wheeler it's a 6 wheeler that means it has 6 drive wheels.
A 4-6-0 Is what a 10 wheelers call it has a total of 10 wheels 4 lead trucks 6 drivers
That's what I've been told for the past 30+ years operating the steam trains
