  • Special Ed joined Drink Champs and definitely brought knowledge. When asked to choose between Wu-Tang and N.W.A, he said N.W.A brought the age of destruction to Hip Hop culture. What do you think?

It’s very simple. The message that NWA was spreading was very important, to know about the problems in south central LA. But the side effect was the downfall of the culture because of gangster rap’s popularity. The keep it real era is the beginning of the end, and the downfall of hip-hop culture. NWA is responsible for that.

    • @curtis75black
      @curtis75black Год назад

The “KEEP IT REAL” era had nothing to do with NWA !! Keeping it real in my eyes is being yourself: HEAVY D. LL, SALT N Pepa, LATIFAH & LYTE not jumping on the bandwagon for spins. They didn’t have to sound like the newer generation to get props and they stayed relevant enough to move on and do other things. The “Keep It Real” (40’s & Blunts, selling Crack and smoking weed, shooting Glocks) was what NY was pushing and who didn’t love it ? Did any of y’all look at these emcees and say “NO, I’m not pushing that !! I’m sticking with PUBLIC ENEMY, PARIS & X-CLAN” ?

I think America already knew about the problems in the ghettos of LA way before NWA spoke on it. America got a wake-up call after the Watts riots in the 60s.

Special Ed was 100% correct. I respect NWA for the material they put out but sadly the Black community in North America has no leadership to tell some of these young guys to hold off on some of the content they are putting out then and now.
I'm in Toronto - Canada and pretty much most of the NY Rappers came to Toronto back then. we had access to pretty much everything that came out via Mixtapes or CKLN 88.1 FM College radio station that played Hip Hop Music every Saturday from 1pm-4pm. The first time I heard NWA it was on that station and the track was "Dopeman, and it wasn't the radio-friendly version. That was the first time I heard that kind of language in music as a kid. Fast-forward a few years and I started hearing about Public Enemy has issues and this world I never heard of before. "antisemitism" back then I didn't understand what that word meant until later on and it clicked. PE was talking about the plight of the Palestinians and that was their way of silencing Griff then and anyone who goes against Israel.
The US government and its mass media is the biggest propaganda machine on the planet, Many people in Jamaica speculated that The CIA had something with Bob Marly getting shot in the early 80s and later on getting cancer, he was trying to stop all the violence and unite the two political party in Jamaica. One party was pro-Cuba. Speaking of Cuba. A couple of years ago I came across an article about how the US government was funding Rappers in Cuba so they can create unrest that society. Article is called "Cuba’s cultural counter-revolution: US gov’t-backed rappers, artists gain fame as ‘catalyst for current unrest’
If the US government is doing this in other countries what makes you think they are not behind some of the crap that's being pushed in media and then and today.

As a young man, I loved NWA. Ice Cube was my go to music to get me hyped up. Nevertheless, as a older, more seasoned man, this music was our detriment. Most of us started wearing our pants sagging. Started walking and talking with a different swagger. Unbeknownst to us, this was planned. The notorious meeting of the music industry and the prison industry is a footnote in black mass incarceration. How did we go from Public Enemy, X Clan, KRS-1, to NWA, Snoop, and Cube?

The undeniable legacy of NWA as I witnessed it is , they introduced the ubiquitous use of the word nigga in rap whenever referring to each other in rap music . This popularized poisonous term that they made their calling card and literal name . They unwittingly ushered in this specific cultural degradation.
I remember being young when they first came out and wondering why they were so mean when talking about women in the songs . Cube's A bitch is a bitch, and I ain't the one, and later ' One less Bitch I gotta worry about ' introduced to rap the worldview that females are just annoying creatures there to be fucked and disposed of, and you'd be a sucka to think otherwise . Rap music before didn't speak of women like this . Rappers mocked girls in songs by Run DMC (dumb girl) , LL( Dear Ivette), Fresh Prince ( Girls of the world) etc, NWA wasn't juvenile jabs, there was a decidedly mean-spirited tone and demoralization of women that they brought to the game .

Freedom of expression has its benefits but there is a double edged sword to it. Freedom of expression carries a HUGE responsibility to it. Just because someone doesn't hold back how they feel about something doesn't make it ok. I could make a song about how my type is children, I could be giving advice through my expression on how others can sleep with children. I could be expressing how your child might be my next victim. Just because I'm being open and honest to express myself on how I really feel does that my my expression ok???
Quit trying to defend something that played a vital role in the destruction of our own people. You can argue Ice Cube is trying to do something positive now but what he's doing now hasn't or won't undue the damage he played a hand in.
And to answer your question about who's responsible, I'll leave you with this:
They (the government, so called white supremacy) couldn't ever achieve the amount of damage they done to us without our own people volunteering to sell us out.

I'm not gonna say live a happy life because I know we all may have problems. I also agree with the man in this vid on the right we don't have to do what rappers say do or we have free will Im not trying to make an excuse for NWA or the labels. I think parents should tell their children not to listen to rap music or to not imitate it if they do. The simple thing to do is just simply go around saying the truth about how bad rap is and see where it goes from there nothing else you can do. Some parents themselves may need to stop imitating bad rap and be told the truth.

However nobody put a gun to nobody head and force them to buy the records… Each man is responsible for self…. I guess people got tired of that weak ass rap thats why that type of music no longer exists

And one more point to make back then the difference with New York was yeah we had gangsta rap but we also had a balance of other type of rap conscious rappers if I didn't want to hear Kool g rap gangsta songs I had krs-1 teaching I had rakim conscious rap I had Rob Base I want to dance and party LL Cool J for the ladies jungle Brothers de la soul slick Rick. West Coast only had gangsta rap even though their gangsta rap had a message and brought awareness it still was gangsta and the youth received it and took it that way and they ran with it to the streets and their neighborhoods causing destruction

The other side of that and the crazy thing about it too is that when Wu-Tang came out they was hardcore want to chop your head off and everything but it didn't take long for them to grow and try to bring awareness to the black community with the 5% teaching and 120 lessons man they shut that down so quick America start getting scared so they promoted that whole bad-boy death row East Coast West Coast buffoonery. Wu Tang should have been the voice of the black communities in the 90s we would have had a better future right now in 2023. They made sure to make it cool to the black communities that bad boy and death row is how we supposed to be when Wu-Tang was talking a whole different language that even our own black people didn't want to support but it's funny how the white people supported Wu-Tang let that sink in

That balance came to a halt 30 years ago. Once the chronic exploded it was a rap, excuse the pun. After that album everyone that didn’t rap like that had a hard time maneuvering . Everything aggressive was getting air play. Remember in 93 Doug Fresh even came out with “Ight” to try to get everything back on track.

Bruh.. dudes acting like they dont know, Yall using word salad. After NWA, record labels were clamoring for the up and coming artists to put out gangsta rap, i remember a kid and play song the lyrics went, " aint gonna hurt nobody but i will if i have to". Fresh prince put out a song called "boom shake the room". These songs weren't gangsta rap in essence, but you can tell the energy shifting from lyrical, conscious, and party rap to a more harder sounding vibe.

As a culture we've lost the ability to dictate the direction of the music. The industry has become oversaturated and so watered down that now no one can singularly galvanize the people in any definitively positive way.The financial suppression of "conscious" or generally positive rap has made it unprofitable to go against the grain.

I think they are one of the greatest hip hop groups in history but their 2nd album was complete mayhem.
Murdering people, songs about raping women, all sorts of shit.

Then they broke up probably before the second album was released. The fans wanted NWA, they didn’t get no major push behind them, the government went at them, their music basically spread through word of mouth.

See here’s the thing: He’s right and wrong with NWA. Really it’s a mixed bag. NWA was speaking on a lot of community issues and they were put on a international level. They were speaking about real things. The dark side is that unfortunately, people ran with it and they didn’t quite have the balance NWA had. But that’s the effect of NWA. But him saying Wu Tang is for the kids, it’s true too but Wu Tang Clan in addition to knowledge was talking about Gangsta shit too. They mixed it but they were saying crazier shit than NWA at some points. And they were actually living the life they were speaking about too. But the irony is that you wouldn’t have a Wu Tang without NWA. So he has to understand that. They are other culprits as well. Let’s not act like Boogie Down Productions first album(classic btw) wasn’t talking about gangsta shit. They went off. Ice T is a another one, Schoolly D, Just Ice, Kool G Rap. Hell even the dress of the rappers from the East mimicked the gang members (Run-DMC) and drug dealers with the enormous chains and flash( slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Eric B and Kool G Rap Rakim etc). It’s just those rappers i mentioned didn’t delve into gang stuff or street shit so much. And if so they did it in metaphors.
But Special Ed is right and wrong with this. He’s right based on actual fact. He’s wrong because they did good too and you can’t mention Wu Tang and say they were just all good also and say NWA was all bad

NWA may have started the age of vulgarity on wax,but they were telling stories about Compton to the world. Reality raps. They only wanted to be heard in their hood and be stars of their hood. They didn't start the age of youth destruction in rap music. Gang culture, started the age of destruction! That existed way before NWA assembled as a rap group! NWA actually had a few positive messages in their music in the beginning. Their music was more about being hard with beats and rhymes. And that was their only crime. And it was all good. NWA are rap legends! I didn't agree with Special Ed on those comments.

Look at Grand Master Melle Mel and The Furious 5”s The Message! That song talked about the ghetto life and the impact was monumental at the time. It was a blueprint for Hip Hop to get its grit from the streets. If it wasn’t For N.W.A. Freedom of Speech would have went against Future Hip Hop Artists. They are the Grandfathers of Gangster Rap.
