  • Recently, social media videos have shown a truck transporting a Leopard 2A6 tank within Russia. This tank, a German-made vehicle donated to the Ukrainian armed forces and considered Ukraine's most powerful tank, was seized following intense combat in Avdiivka. What details do we know about this event, and what use might Russia make of this captured Leopard tank?

    These expert commentators, think tanks are invisible on the battlefield, I read a book on the Eastern Front WWll, said most tanks only lasted 1-3 days on the battlefield, from mechanical breakdowns, artillery fire, anti-tank guns and from airplanes taking them out of action, and from other tanks. The Russians lost a lot of tanks on the Eastern Front over 25,000, but they produced 50,000. The problem with western tanks is they are too big, heavy, and too expensive, and Ukraine has a logistics problem keeping those tanks maintained, for the battlefield. The Abrahams, The German tank and the British tank, all use different parts. I read that Russia is losing from 60-70 tanks a month, but they are producing new tanks at 120 a month, so keeping up with battle attrition from the front line.

    Western tanks particularly vulnerable? Wouldn't say so, any tank is vulnerable under conditions over there and so many things capable of killing them. NATO tanks they have tried to hold from the front lines but the lack of tanks for Ukraine have forced the Leopard and Abrahams to the front. Of course maintenance is a convenient excuse for them not performing but logistics is what wins war. By the time the A8s are out in numbers (3-5 years), they will be costing 3x of the T-14 Armata (already in serial production), yet being still a generation behind in terms of capabilities.

    Russia has enough intel on the western military assets but to get the real thing for studying it is always a bonus. After the USSR collapse, USA went on a shopping spree in post communist states, buying all kinds of Soviet made military tech for exactly the same purpose. The story about the MiG-29 helmet mounted targeting system with the Archer missile was a shock to the system, the Russians did have certain advances that the US military had no clue about, they were quick enough to adapt similar systems in the US.

      There is a commentary above stating "I think in this war Russia is learning more from these western weapons then west is learning from Russian weapons".
      In case you've missed something: in WWII the miserable soviet tanks and tactics defeated the mighty german panzer and the blitzkrieg. The Panzer were heavy, hard to maintain, frequently breaking down. While the Russians tanks were rustic and expandable but agile and powerful.
      It seems the west has not learnt the good lessons from WWII. Your Abrams is suffering from the same defaults as German tanks were (and apparently still are): Abrams are too heavy, and I've read they collect mud, they are ineffective on the Ukranian front. They maybe good in other conditions but not in Ukraine.
      Their may easily pierce an enemy tank at incredible distances while moving. Problem is: in Ukraine the average tank firing range is 1000 meters. And the drones are a real problem for mobility.
      Russian tactics and weaponery were the one to study and copy not the ones from the German losers.
      Another point. In the illegal war against Serbia for Kossovo the Nato troops didn't dare fighting the Serbian army. They just bombed military targets and generously pounded civilians (as usual). I doubt the US will risk it against the Russian. It should be much harder than against the small Serbian army and their 40 anti aircraft system (which Nato never managed to destroy completely).
      I wish your good luck with your 6000 abrams.

      @@michaele8442 Sure, the casualties were horrific. German war crimes are responsible for most of the casualties, Stalin did the rest. Half of soviet soldier casualties are POW death in German camps and more civilians died than soldiers. Nothing to be proud of.

    • @laurentyarp514
      @laurentyarp514 Месяц назад

      @@michaele8442 More than half of those casualties are civilian casualties due to the inhumanity of the German regime at the time: Starvation, forced labor, mass killing. And half of the Russian military losses have the same cause: POW deaths because of Starvation and forced labor.
      I don't deny the Staline's regime responsibility in all this too. Human waves, lack of care for civilians situation. Ok with that.
      So there was a famine situation in USSR during the war and this has nothing to see with German military might. I mean this has to see with the German invasion, not with the uber power of the Panzern.
      Did you know that during operation Bagration the soviet losses were inferior to the ones in the German army. This proves that the soviet did learn from the war. I am just saying: they were the army to study and copy after the war.
      The war in Ukraine is proving wrong that German inspired type of equipement is superior to soviet inspired one.
      It is an irony that the Ukrainian offensive during summer 2023 was beaten off with the exact same tactics as the soviet defeated the Wehmacht at the battle of Kurks. This illustrates enough that the Ukrainians and Nato generals are profound idiots.
