Burl Ives should have gotten an Oscar! Notice, Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, and a handicapped person were intertwined in the story, not to mention the other themes: Affluence vs. poverty, addictions, falling from grace within society, peer pressure, unrequited love, young love,... This was a masterpiece!
Indeed everyone in this multi-racial cast was superb. Sarah Vaughn as the addict/Singer and Ricardo Montobane as Gigolo/Drug pusher stand out for me. Can you take the Child out of the Ghetto. Or will that lifestyle follow them into Grave?
I met Shelley Winters at a book signing in Toronto in 1980. She was really nice, but while she was signing my book and chatting with me, she was flirting with a young man next in line. She was so funny and very kind. I was only 19 but I remembered her from The Poseidon Adventure. It was a thrill meeting her. 😀♥️
All the actors were absolutely top-notch but Shelley Winters was absolutely outstanding. I think she deserved an Oscar for her performance in this film. Bravissima!
The movie is so exciting in the end. All the acting is superb. Shelley Winters is awesome. And the story is heart wrenching; displaying several social problems that unfortunately still exist in exactly the same way today. The whole movie could easily have played in 2025...
I love the Christmas story the judge tells Nicky 12:25. And later in court, I thought the judge did well with his arguments, until he fell…🤷🏻♀️The cast is awesome. Anything with Shelly Winters is great, imo. Love seeing Ella too. I’m sure I saw this before… Many years ago I’m sure. Thanks much.
Stumbled upon this by chance but with Shellwy Winters I knew I would like it. Suprising tale but superbly presented and it would have been quite shocking when first released. Just excellent on all counts.
Thanks for posting this half-forgotten gem. Such a great cast, spiced with a rare film cameo by Ella Fitzgerald. For Jean Seberg, this film was made in the same year as her career-defining 'Breathless'.
Loved every bit of the movie. I know I would love it because I love Burl Ives and Shelley Winters but the supporting actors were top notch as well. Thank upi
Reality does bite and when you see this slice-of-life movie, you will know what I mean .In the ghettos of New York, life is not all beer and skittles for most of its inhabitants. Ace performances by Shelley Winters, James Darren and Ricardo Montalban, and not forgetting the very lovely Jean Seberg as Darren's young love who comprise the cast of this unforgettable movie. If you are middle-class or belong to the poorer section of society, you will be able to identify with the casts' characterizations.
What an extraordinary movie. I’ve never seen it before. Shelly Winters deserved an Oscar for her performance. The movie was way ahead of its time with respect to diversity of the actors and content. Thank you so much for posting this.
Sequel to KNOCK ON ANY DOOR and both based on Willard Motley's excellent novels of the same titles. The previous one tells Nick's father's story, and it's also available here to watch for free.

Excellent use of location shooting in 1950s Chicago. This was Fitzgerald's last film, although she continued to enjoy many television appearances, plus her famous Memorex commercials.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL, hard hitting FACTUAL Movie! ANY young person that’s thinking about doing DRUGS, or is on DRUGS, should see this movie! GREAT ACTRESS, SHIRLEY WINTERS, Bernie HAMILTON, the creator of BLACK HOLLYWOOD! He open up a really great night club called the cita del de HAITI, on the SUNSET STRIP, in 1969, I was 17-years old , and I work for him at his club, later on I became a promoter, and started my own clubs because of his influence! ELLA, THE DIVA, singing ANGEL EYES, under those people talking, what a travesty! A very real deal of a movie that showed the hardships of a hard working mother trying to keep her life all together, while trying to sacrifice for her only son, so that he could grow up and be somebody special!

Hard to put into the context of today's tragic street scene but I assume some of the same love and compassion still exists it's just hard to see from a distance.
Haven't looked at this movie yet, but I seem to recall decades ago either reading or hearing something about Ella Fitzgerald having some kinda association with this picture...either appeared in it or sang a song from it...can't remember which, but will take a look at it to see.
You are right, @waldolydecker8118. Ms. Fitzgerald's album, "Ella Fitzgerald Sings Songs from 'Let No Man Write My Epitaph'," features songs from this film, along with a few more songs.
What a powerful, and at the same time depressing, movie; nothing in society has really changed in 50 years. The main cast was great, as were all the colorful character actors at every turn.
What a stellar cast ... amazing !!! To think that Columbia Pictures is now owned by the Coca-Cola company makes me sad ... very sad indeed. What does the Coca-Cola company know about making movies ???
Wow! What a movie! Excellent performances. Shelley Winters and Burl Ives acting was so good. Shelley Winters, Burl Ives, James Darren, RIchardo Montalban, Ella Fitzgerald, Jean Seaberg, Jeanne Cooper, and some great famous character actors of the past were all great performances in one film. This film was outstanding. Shelley Winters had a beautiful figure when she was young and I loved her dresses. The only thing I didn't like was James Darren and RIchardo Montalbans hair style. In that time period their hair style was too unnatural, unmovable, like a helmet.
The cast is stellar, but I've always found movies from this era painfully nyalistic and sadly darkly bleak. Mr. Ives' touching performance was a stunning surprise.
What’s your favorite Shelley Winters role?
I really love her acting but I really enjoyed her performance in Lolita.
This movie and one called An Unremarkable life. Patricia Neal is in the movie as well. Must also mention a Patch of Blue
