Quackers was a much-loved pet Indian Runner Duck who lived at Mapperton in West Dorset, England.
Unfortunately a visitor to the historic house and gardens let her dog off the lead, and the dog attacked Quackers. The dog owner then retrieved the injured duck and wrung its neck before throwing the dead Quackers into the long grass.
There are numerous signs at Mapperton asking visitors to keep their dogs on a lead because of the ducks and chickens. And while accidents can happen, it is upsetting that the dog owner left the scene without saying sorry. Donate here: www.gofundme.c...
The story of Quackers has touched hearts across the nation, following news articles in several national newspapers and the BBC.
We have therefore set up the Quackers Memorial Pond Fund to celebrate the life of our beloved Indian Runner duck.
The funds raised will be spent on the creation of a new pond which will attract wild ducks and other wetland species to Mapperton.
We will also plant trees, shrubs and aquatic plants in the pond, alongside a plaque to commemorate Quackers. In this way, we hope that her legacy will be the creation of a new wetland habitat which will provide a refuge for wild ducks and other wildlife for decades to come.
Please note that the more funds we raise, the larger the pond will be, and the greater the benefit will be for ducks and wetland wildlife.

The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoff...
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.

Have a 6K "Duck" run in memory of Quackers the Runner Duck....to benefit the new pond!
Oh! That’s a great idea! For local school kids and teens who love to run! Or everybody and community picnic!
@@28105wskinggreat idea. Many possibilities with that.
Fabulous idea!!
@@28105wsking LOVE THIS!!
Great idea. Since Mapperton has a kids play area now they should consider including a 1-mile fun run/walk for the little ones.
Option B for everyone but especially for your lovely Mum.
"I can and I did". Don't you just love interaction between mum and grown son😅❤
My son and I share a harmonious love of the natural world. I am glad they do as well.
I thought,🤦🏼♀️ “Luke, it’s best not to tell the woman who labored, bore you, & raised you that she can’t reveal your age. You do realize you live today because of your Mom, right?” Frankly, it’s probably best not to tell your Mom what she cannot do, period. 🤣 Also, like to cast my vote for option B. 😊
Option B would be the perfect place to have a pond.
Option B for the duck pond looks like the best idea.
You should have Luke’s Mom on more often. She’s a hoot. I vote pond option B.
I agree, 100% with both of those statements!
Mum knows best. A true countrywoman. Option B is perfect. Wherever the beavers are, they are having a great adventure.
Luke, I vote B and like "Quackers Tributary" - one should never doubt one's mother's advice, especially your mum's! Lady Sandwich is the hidden jewel of Mapperton. She really needs her own channel. I love her stories!
A pond is a great idea Julie. Quackers is missed I know and maybe this awareness will keep other animals safer. ❤
I hope so!
Option B all the way.......safer for pets and wild critters but still accessible. A very pretty, serene area and the troll bridge to view the pond would be great!!! Your mom is a character.....such fun. Love her knowledge about the estate.
RIP Quackers! 😢
🙏💙
From Buffalo, NY USA
My Mom feeds ducks, geese etc in front of her home. So this story broke my heart.
Luke, go with option B! Your mum has the mind of a gardener, and has the vision of how the pond should appear. Also, it will make her happy. Remember, it is said, “If Mamma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!”
Most definitely, option B🙏🙏 Mapperton is so beautiful...you are very fortunate to live there🥰 I'm so sorry you lost poor Quackers.😔
The legend of Quackers will live on.
Option B cause I absolutely adore the Countess of Sandwich interaction with her son when she gave away her son's age, that was absolutely priceless!!!
How wonderful to build/create alone in Quackers memory for other water foul to enjoy.
Option B!
Quackers would love the pond your building in his memory.
Quakers was in the USA news before we found out on your show. Poor Quakers. He was so cherished and had a geeat life but still so startling and upsetting. Love the conservatory and pond idea!!!
I so enjoy Caroline, Countess of Sandwich whenever we have the chance to enjoy her company, she has so much Knowledge of the Family and the Estate. She IS her own woman. “I can and I have!”
Option B in total deference and agreement with Mum. Good luck with the beaver pond. Would love to see them, or others, back. 🥰
Definitely option B because Luke’s Mother knows what she is talking about.
Both locales would be lovely, although I believe your mom's first choice (option 'B') is brilliant.
So sad about Quackers but I think he would like Option B. Other ducks would like the sunshine and openness. We have Canadian geese in the creek nearby and they love it there. They come every summer. It is a green space with room for beavers, otters and ducks. It’s a beautiful walk with benches placed along the way.
Absolutely option B! I also love your Mother! ❤🌹🇺🇸
Good afternoon everyone 👋❤️🇨🇦
Saw so many different parts of your lovely estate....i have an idea......make a lovely fold out map of the whole estate so we can purchase and follow along and see where you are while we watch. Also, cotton tea towels with mapperton on it would be great for your merch shop.
This is a fantastic idea
Lovely idea!!
I would love a tea towel with the full castle!
I quite like the map idea! That's brilliant! 👏
The next time you get beavers, you should put chips in them so you can locate them if they get out. Beavers like deep ponds
I believe that Luke is in his element trying to solve Mapperton’s outdoor issues. I enjoy seeing his enthusiasm and feel badly for his frustrations.
Thank you for this very newsy post!
RIP Quackers 😢 I love your Black Lab ❤🐾
Option B! It will be a beautiful spot for the ducks and all wildlife.
Rip quackers u are dearly missed
I love how kindly Luke talks with his mom.
Shes so knowledgeable about the garden.
I vote for plan B
My family lived out in the country and we took care of ducks and geese and skunk family and raccoons and feral cats and a mountain lion and yes even a bear and peacocks and other animals lol. Even humans in need. I now live in town and I still have wildlife that comes and stays on my porch a doe and her babies and others. I've always had a way with animals. Love and blessings from Wyoming USA Robbie McVay and Sasha and mocha mcvay
Always enjoy your Mom. Option B, for sure.
I think Quackers would like opt. B. I LOVE YOUR CONSERVATION EFFORTS! It still just boggles the mind how this person treated you all: esp.Quackers. All my thoughts to all at Mapperton. Carol
Option B is a lovely wonderful place for your ducks and other birds!
I’ve never clicked on one of your videos so fast! I just can’t imagine how a pet owner could murder another animal like that. You’re spot on, Julie-it’s shocking, and I’m still shocked someone would do that and not come forward. Especially if it’s been clear charges won’t be filed against them.
Edit: I like Luke’s mom’s pond idea. I think that bridge nearby would be a great visual lead up to the memorial pond. It gives space for contemplation, and I definitely got a sense of serenity from that area. I’d definitely put it on my bucket list to visit, and I hadn’t honestly contemplated too much outside my own ancient ancestry there (from before they moved over here to the “colonies” and started intermarrying with Native Americans; I’m directly descended from Malcolm III of Scotland, the first governor of “Virginia,” and 3 Native Nations incl 2 tribal chiefs).
I think option B. A larger pond in an open area seems like a good idea.
Option B for the memorial duck pond looks good. RIP Quackers ❤
Mum knows best! Follow her direction!
Option B sounds a great choice
Option B for mum
I enjoyed seeing so many new areas of the woodlands. ❤
Option b
Excellent episode
I love it when you go out into the estate, it is so beautiful and peaceful and I just imagine myself walking along side of you guys. Thank you for sharing your estate with us.
Option B! A 6 K run and then a festivity. Bring in food trucks, have games for the kiddies, music, make it a traditional Quaker Day of celebrating all things duck!
I agree with the Countess, option B can more easily be made a more open pond to attract wild ducks. It will also be important to let visitors know to not feed the wild ducks. Bread is terrible for them. Thrilled to hear beavers will be coming back once again.
To the woman who killed Quackers, you would be seeing & reading each & every video & paper yet you remain silent.
Option B for Quackers Memorial Pond.🙏
Be kind. I’m sure she was young and scared and confused and didn’t know what to do. Even more scared now!
Lots of hard work and planning goes in these ponds. Kudos to
Poor Quackers. The story is tragic in several ways but the way it's taken on a life of its own is kind of comical. I always love to see Caroline (and John, too!).
Oh The 6K duck run is a great idea !! Love you guys
I agree with your mum definitely option B!
Definitely Option B! I am VERY impressed with the work you guys have done on the stream and the pond. An awful amount of work to do, yet it looks splendid. This was a terrific episode. I enjoyed it so much. Thank you!
Viscount looks like Option B is a winner! Thank you both for another most wonderful episode and it is great to see that the flood damage especially to the Beaver dam is in the progress of being repaired, will be great to see the Beavers back home again at the Mapperton Estate. Thank you both, be safe and God Bless. 🤩👍😇🙏🏰
Option B is definitely the right choice. Love the interaction between you and your mom, Luke.
Luke please put it where mom wants it,period she is the matriarch of it all, please be polite and remember that…trust her eye for her lost joy of quakers
Love how you can turn and run from rain (giggle). Like Mom’s Option B Please! Well done Luke, interesting Beaver tell trail and dam.
I think option B has my vote.
You Mappertons are quite funny and being from the US, any reason to laugh currently is appreciated.
My experience with beavers is “!pick the place you’d least like then and that’s where they go naturally!?!”
Luke, resistance is futile, as the Countess said.....Option B 💜
"I can and I have!" Luke, your mother, the countess, is fabulous! I love her humour and appreciate her knowledge and sense of adventure. I definitely like option B. I think it would attract ducks and be a great place to sit and observe in quiet and a sense of the past. I always enjoy Luke's explorations and explanations of the land and its problems, they add a lot of interest and beauty. Thank you for this lovely episode.❤
I agree with Luke's Mom. I think that option B would be a perfect site for a duck pond! It's more open, and a rounded area for a natural pond.
Your mum is correct, a smaller pond, maybe two. Otherwise big could ruin the stream and surround. Big is for an open. paddock. A big sign for Quacker. Bless you all. 🤗
Mother knows best- my vote is for the second site near the troll bridge. Also, I second the fun run idea, and, perhaps, duck-themed merch to help raise funds for the pond. Hic jacet Quackers. Lovely to know that beavers are coming back to Mapperton, too.
I love your mum, and she is quite right option B please. I also love you and your lovely wife.
Of course, its Option B. The wild grounds are so beautifully green. I loved the wander around Luke and his lady mother took exploring a site for the Quackers Pond.
Sorry for the loss of your duck. I know you loved him. He is with Jesus now.I think animals go to heaven. God bless you.
Nancy I believe the animals deserve heaven much more than some people do
The conservatory!!! Stunning. My lungs feel clearer all the way in the United States having just seen all the exquisite foliage. ❤️ # Quakersremembered ☮️ 💕 You’re passion for history and family and future is just lovely.
I have said many ugly very unsophisticated words about the brutality against sweet Quakers. Adoration for your dedication.😊❤
Option B. But how far is it for visitors to get there? Reasonable walking distance from the entrance even in poor weather? Love you mum! She just tells it like it is! Luke may not like it all the time but you sure tell there is much love ❤️ in your family. 👍🏻👏🏻😁
Visitors don't need to see everything. If this duck pond can be a safe haven where visitors never come, the ghost of Quakers would be much happier.
@@ellenanthony8017 visitors need to come and see Mapperton to keep it going for future generations. I’m sure Quacker would be very pleased if that happened. I also know if they are going to build a pond in his honor it will be the best ever and water creature will come from all over to see it! Quack quack! Yeah Quacker!! 🦆👍🏻😃👏🏻
OptB. What a pleasure to see you out walking with your mother. I hope your father is still doing well. I think “on golden Pond “would be a beautiful addition to your area.
I hope you get the beavers active again.
Option B it will look amazing ❤
Hi Luke and Julie, for me is option B more possible. Maybe a (sandstone) model of Quackers coukld stand near the pond.
Your estate takes my breath away. From San Francisco I’m going to come visit next year and I can’t wait. Still so upset about the beautiful duck. Who on earth could do such a thing. Quackers has indeed become famous rest its sole! Such a sweet idea the pond in memory. Warms my heart Julie.
I think you've hit the nail on the head with option B!
The pond needs to be where there are no trees or that are far enough away that leaves wouldn't fall into it or block the view from above. A pond could stop the creek from flowing if the water is low
I'm team option B. Great location for migrating ducks and other wildlife! Best of luck with the project, very exciting, and a fitting tribute to poor Quackers!
Tell your mother option B is a fabulous spot for the Quacker pond!!!!
Option B - definitely
Option B for the duck pond
There is a HUGE stone troll under a bridge in Seattle. It's called The Fremont Troll. You should put a troll under a bridge near where the children of your guests regularly visit. If there isn't a bridge, you should build one, just so you can put a troll under it. lol. (I comment as I watch your video) I think putting the pond in Option B by that bridge would be a great idea ... then you can finally have your troll there. Of course you'll have to put some faeries in the trees and gnome houses at the base of the trees.
Hi Luke and Julie, I have to go with plan B. Not because Luke's Mum told us to do so (Although, maybe), Lol... But I happen to agree with the lady, it is far more interesting on the eye. It would also be rather nice to see the overgrown path come back to life. I have to say, Luke... Your Mum is a real trooper and very witty. So much work has been done to restore the Beaver pond, really starting to take shape again. Good luck with that. x
I love your channels! So glad to hear that you will have beavers again.
Option B would be very nice. The wild ducks will enjoy the size and peace.
Luke, I have to say I agree with your lady mother. I do indeed prefer Option B. The wilder looking situation would attract more wild waterfowl.
Option B please...mothers are always right...❤
Julie , Luke and Luke's Mother nice video I happy that Quackers is going to have a pond.
thank you for sharing...including Luke [and Chris'] adventure(s)...
Enjoyed this episode about possible ponds to commemorate Quackers ( vote for option B) and the repair of the beaver’s pond! Also enjoy Luke and his mother!
Love the Option B site!
option B. I like the non steep, no covered area. My parents fed ducks during all seasons in Boise, Id, USA. They would get sometimes over 100 ducks! These were Mallard types. I love learning about those runner ducks! They are beautiful. Thank you for all these videos.
First, as the Countess outranks us all, Option B it is....and Luke, it is ALWAYS a mother's prerogative to embarrass their offspring, especially if that offspring is trying to be a tad cheeky😂😂 The Countess needs to be shown more. She is an absolute treasure!!
It’s not on the dog, it’s on the nasty woman (with a child???) who wrung his neck- horrible human being. Poor dog living like a person like that-
Indeed! even if she thought it to be a humane approach to end the duck's life, it most certainly was utterly unacceptable for her to do so without permission AND in such a callous way. The Vicountess Julie is brilliant, so respectful of her family's history . She is a treasure❤
Live and learn!
We had a river flowing through our back yard in South Africa a trickle in the dry months and a flood during each storm. My dad built a parallel channel higher than the river bypassing the dammed areas he had a sluice on the upper pond and a sluice on the bottom pond with a pipe with stones inside a hessian bag or chicken wire..Hessian bags also trap som silt, done half way through to control the flow. ❤️
Option B, please. I think it would be beautiful to be on the bridge and watch the ducks. Maybe a log bench to watch the wild ducks from a respectful distance. 🪿🪿🪿🦆🦆🦆
Thanks for the update on the beaver pond.
Option B please! Will give visitors a reason to explore the end of the valley/garden.
Option B! :) love all the wilderness ideas.
Option B looks like an inviting place for wild ducks.
option B - for mom 🤣
Definitely option B . Can't wait to see the build❤❤
Option B for your Mum also. 💐💕
