The Varian/Saurfang thing was awesome. Having them both stuck in the sword, I assume because they both died holding it was cool. Hearing him say "My son" gave me goosebumps. BUT they could have done so much more with Arthas here before he faded away. Have him materialize and help save Anduin, then talk to Anduin saying he wouldn't share the same fate as him. Have him have a moment/goodbye with Uther (especially with the Bastion pre-story) and Jaina where they realize they failed him at Stratholme which led to so many things. Have him and Sylvanas face off one final time and talk. Apologize to her and tell her to make amends for all the terrible things she did, something he will never have the chance to do. You can't redeem Sylvanas with the Jailer scapegoat and not somewhat redeem Arthas as well. Having him just fade away like that after teasing so much more and wasting so much potential was absolute dogshit. The twisting of the knife there is having Sylvanas of all people monologue at his soul when her storyline is literally the same kind of arc. Who knows though maybe something will change with the Jailer fight/mythic only phase/cinematic (if there is one). Just feels like such a waste. Same as Garrosh in the last raid.
Even if Arthas stayed this way, a scarred remnant of his soul, not having Uther and Jaina talk to him, while giving the whole scene to Sylvanas for no reason other than Danuser's boner for her is ridiculous.

I love that both Saurfang and Varian were able to split the blade but Anduin never could so those two showing up to give him strength to now be able to do so is a great bookend to Anduin growing up to be a king like his father, starting from the very moment he picked up the blade and saw Varian on the Broken Shore
I don't think those were the souls of Varian and Saurfang because that doesn't seem to make much sense with what happened to them--Varian's soul I think was obliterated to the Fel energy Gul'dan used and Saurfang likely would have gone to the Maw after Sylvanas used the Jailor's power in their Mak'gora. But I think they were more so like a memory or something else that stuck with Shalamayne due to them both having been able to split the blade into its separate parts (I suppose each blade is meant to represent valor and honor like they mentioned here). It felt cool thematically although if I were to give a bit of constructive criticism to the writing here, it's kind of a Deus Ex Machina moment because why should the power of Shalamayne with Varian's and Saurfang's influence be enough to break the Jailer's godtier domination magic? But regardless, that part of the cinematic I'm okay with all things considered. But... there was just so much wrong with the last half. I know Blizz has mentioned they were hesitant of doing too much fanservice for Arthas to potentially ruin his legacy, but with the story arc of this expansion it was inevitable that he'd have to be involved in some way, so I'll just go ahead and say this feels like a bigger insult than any cheap fanservice ever could be, especially after having gotten some teases along the way suggesting he'd show up eventually, only to not even have his soul manifest enough to have one last goodbye convo with the characters here. Hell I probably would have preferred him to not show up at all if it was just a choice between that and what we got here. He could have been a part of the process that broke Anduin free which would have made my earlier point about the Deus Ex Machina less egregious because at least Arthas had gone through years of being the Jailer's puppet and it was even stated during Wrath that a part of Arthas still remained within the Lich King just enough to hold back from unleashing the full might of the Scourge washing over the world like a locust swarm, so that was a completely wasted opportunity for a reasonable redemption. For the sake of argument, if I were to accept that this is how Arthas' legacy was meant to end, why the hell should Sylvanas have the most voicelines addressing him, especially in such a condescending tone when she should know by now that it was always the Jailer controlling him as the Lich King like he did with her? Uther and Jaina of course have a huge emotional bond to him (not that Sylvanas doesn't), they should have gotten more lines grieving over his fall from grace while Sylvanas really only needed the line admitting her selfishness caused her to become more like him (as the Lich King, mind you, not who he was prior to being mindcontrolled). I'll go ahead and stop the rant now, but yeah first half was better than what I expected out of Blizz at this point, I would have been willing to give the writing team credit for a decent cinematic if it weren't for the last half.

I mean, Arthas has been a narrative dead horse for a long time. He's been effectively gone since WC3 and this is just Blizzard beating a dead horse again. So they spat on his corpse again, sure. She'll probably get away with everything, don't worry. Maybe she'll feel a little bad for a minute or so. But the horde usually turn out not to be responsible for their own atrocities so this'll be more of the same.
The problem with the people that hate the cinematic is that they play both horde and alliance if you play strictly alliance you will love it people judge it harshly as horde players or alliance and horde because they rate it to horde cinematics which makes it bad in their eyes im strictly alliance and i love the cinematic to death it shows the strength of man even when our will is weak
Ok so, personal feelings about the story of sylvanas and shadowlands aside, this was a great cinematic. Varian and saurfang giving strength to anduin to save himself might be one of the best things I’ve seen ina. While. The last whisper of arthas, finally free from his torments, dissipating into nothing, the closure on one of the most iconic characters in WoW and Warcraft history, was great. Seeing sylvanas realize she had become nothing better than what he had become in her quest for vengeance against him, hopefully it leads somewhere ajd doesn’t just bottom out. We’ll see the final ending next week when we kick zovaal in the dick I suppose
I know Sylvanas has gotten a lot of shit recently because of her redemption arc, but I do like the small amount character development in this cinematic.
it's always funny to see how "shocked" and disgusted people are and say, that Blizz have done Arthas dirty. They haven't... Yes, Arthas Menthil/The Lich King was one of the best characters Warcraft ever had, but up until Shadowlands all we knew was that a bunch of no-names, WE, simply killed him in Ice Crown. That was it...mighty character, super strong, POOF dead. I'm glad, they at least used his evil soul to have one final purpose. There would never have been a chance for redemption anyway, let's face it. Other than Sylvanas, Arthas gave himself to the darkness/evil willingly out of hate/seek for revenge!
@@Anghroth i dont care for redeption or whatever, him just being a small fart and then vanishng without a word was stupid and boring for such a major character.
You cried in the exact same moment as I, lol. Andy's two daddies coming to give their strength. I also think this is a good ending for Arthas. I didn't realize it before until I watched this but when she says "May the last whisper of your name..." ... I recalled the OG Wrath cinematic "...the very forest of Lordaeron whispered the name, Arthas..." ... interesting full circle.
Honestly it can be interpreted in 2 ways and i love that. 1. Varian and Saurfang's couls are in the blade because they bouth died wielding it. 2.. They are just an imagination of Anduin's mind that triggered when the Jailed claimed its his blade. Also gotta appreciate how they illustrated Arthas, they didn't did him dirty as many claim because this cinematic is not about him ... so this choice was made to avoid him stealing the spotlight. Everyone frim there said there goodbyes to him so whats to point doing it again, except Sylvanas , in her goodbye it's more of a self reflection and admiting to herself that she did all those things without being manipulated.
Arthas was a pivotal event for Sylvanas, but she was not significant to him, just one more road kill. HIs epitaph belongs to those who had loved him. Sylvanas has not changed a bit for all her posturing. Everything remains all about her. She remains utterly preoccupied with feeling sorry for herself. "I hated you until I became you, Begone because you deserve to be forgotten." Hypocrite. If that is true for Arthas than it is also true for Sylvanas. By her own words, she is no better. LIke Arthas, Sylvanas deserves to be forgotten, to drop dead, dry up, and blow away.
Someone give me some lore ive missed… whats it with arthas just seems like an ass pull to say forget him (ive not played recently) like arthas’ soul whats so special about it? Is he the jailer reincarnate or something? Glad to see varian and saurfang that made total sense to me just the whole Arthas milking never made sense in my eyes I should be able to look at cinematic and see how the story unfold but you look at these and nothing makes sense one bit. If im wrong fair enough but just feels like a last attempt to save this utterly poor excuse of an expansion and story. Microsoft pls save this sinking ship
Arthas was of maybe the best allies / servants and was a soul sent to the Maw unjustly by Uther ... he didn't deserve to be there so maybe thats why his essence was different than the other souls'.
Im glad Arthas got a known end and it wasn't redemption. As much as I would have liked Jaina to have a goodbye speech she feels so far removed from the girl who loved him it doesn't overly matter Sylvannas and Uthers characters are more bound to his end than her. WoW still knocking Cinematic out of the park
@Daren Fliflet I didn't want a Sylvannas redemption I would be happy if she is forced into some uncomfortable pennance now they have gone down this path. That being said I still feel Arthas was worst(maybe thats just due to how long he was the lich king) and if one of them were to be redeemed I would rather Sylvannas over Arthas

But the horde usually turn out not to be responsible for their own atrocities so this'll be more of the same.
i think they were always part of the blade
Should be called when the men show up
i miss Saurfang he was the best of the horde ! my rottweiler is name after him , his name is Saurfang
Great name for a doggo, particularly a rott. A name like that needs a big dog. It would be laughable on a beagle.
No way!
"That was dope" very brave of you to be so wrong so publicly.
It WAS dope! Very brave of you to think you are right 😂
I'm mixed on it but its a beautifully done cinematic.
I love Sour Fang!
Doing this to Arthas can be compared to a writer trying to ruin the main character of a story, but instead become hated by the audience himself.
Yeah idk about that one. Arthas was a piece of shit and got the ending he deserved - this wasn't his ending
Ok this cinematic was actually good compared to so many in this expansion
The problem with the people that hate the cinematic is that they play both horde and alliance if you play strictly alliance you will love it people judge it harshly as horde players or alliance and horde because they rate it to horde cinematics which makes it bad in their eyes im strictly alliance and i love the cinematic to death it shows the strength of man even when our will is weak
There are no horde or alliance cinematics in Shadowlands
I'm glad i'm not the only one who liked the cinematic XD
Varían.. 😍😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩🥺🥺🙌🙌✋🤚👊
Bro when you will make pokemon Soulsilver episode
I know Sylvanas has gotten a lot of shit recently because of her redemption arc, but I do like the small amount character development in this cinematic.
One of the best characters(Arthas) in wow if not gaming history and it ends like this, i am glad i've quit this game.
it's always funny to see how "shocked" and disgusted people are and say, that Blizz have done Arthas dirty.
It was good until the blade broke. then the rest of it was absolute trash. They did the OG prince dirty.
😂😂😂😂
This cinematic is so good
are you kidding me?! they screw it up again!
It was a good cinematic and a good ending for Arthas as a character. A little good character development after all has happened in Shadowlands 😅
alright alright im usually toxic, but this cinematic got the best of me, u win bliz
Jailer... zzzzzzzzz
Jailer literally isn't in this video
