I grew up in the 80's and I remember after hearing this song thinking THESE CHICKS ROCK
The Go-Gos were great. They had very catchy songs. This one was their first big hit.
I remember when this was new and all over the TV and radio. It doesn't seem possible that the time between now and then, would be like me looking back at a song from World War II when this song came out. It feels nuts. Don't blink, youngiun's, cause it really does fly.
How true! This album is almost 40 years old, and I loved them before it came out. I'm from Los Angeles, and Rodney Bingenheimer used to play them on his midnight show on KROQ. That was the only way you could hear an import single of We Got The Beat, until I finally scored a copy of a 45 of it at a record store in Westwood. When the whole album came out, I thought I had died and gone to heaven! These ladies were just the coolest!
I remember watching this music video for the time on HBO before MTV started broadcasting later in the same year in 81. I also remember watching the Pointer Sisters' He's So Shy music video on HBO too.
This was my band when I was in high school! The Go-Go's were the first all girl group who actually wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to have a #1 album on the Billboard charts. They had an image of being bubbly girls next door, but in reality, they were five former punkers with a reputation for debauchery while on tour. After three albums, they broke up over money squabbles, and lead singer Belinda Carlisle has had a pretty successful solo career. They reunited in 1990, and have toured off and on since then. A documentary about them is going to be airing on Showtime in August. I've seen them in concert six times, and they never disappoint! You should listen to this entire album, Beauty and the Beat. It's a raw, post-punk masterpiece. You will certainly recognize We Got The Beat, the other big hit off the album, as well as the title track from their next album, Vacation, which has been used in a million commercials. It's hard to listen to them without it putting you in a good mood!
I was an 1980’s baby so I grew up to their music and still listen to it today.
FUNNY BUT TRUE: my friend played played in a punk band called the Johnnies .Him and a friend were making fun of these girls in the back of a punk club. Something like" You're not going to be anything!" "Yes ,we are!" "What are you gonna call yourselves?" "The GoGos" Haha! Became one of the greatest rock groups of the early 80s. Thanks for reviewing one of my faves from my youth. ( Im 55, now)

Great band, great song. Fun fact when they are playing in the fountain at the end of the video, that is located in Beverly Hills. They were hoping the police would respond and they could get arrested in their video. The police never showed so they just gave up but put the fountain scene in the video anyway.

I'm an 80s guy. The Go Go's were the ONLY female band to write their own music, play their own instruments and make it to # 1 on the charts by doing so. This was a great era for music and probably will be the best ever. I still love it to this day! Thank you for reviewing it!!!!

Wasn't this song originally done by The Specials? And then the Go Go's made it their own? Or the Go Go's version is definitely well known.
@@dalee72 It was first released by The Go-Go's but was co-written as mentioned above. Fun Boy Three released it two years later and that version became a bigger hit in the UK.

You probably have heard this and 1000 other 80's pop songs in movies (even new movies) but you may also be thinking about Some movie where Hillary Duff did a cover of this song for that specific movie. Forget which one, one of my daughters liked that movie a while ago so yes I've seen it... probably a bunch of times

The Go-Go’s version is better, it it’s bubblegum but the lyrics are serious, so it’s really funny. It has a good beat and you can dance to it!
