  • A video to help anyone with casting no matter if you're a new Skirmisher or new muzzleloading or even a veteran in the hobby. In this video I cover some ins and outs of getting started with cold lead, what to look for when casting, ways to improve, and what to look for during the process. I'm casting the RCBS Hodgdon type in a .576 mould to size down to a .575 in my Lyman lubesizer. This specific type is highly regarded and used in the N-SSA as the design was specifically created for shooting N-SSA competitions. When choosing the size for your muzzleloader you want one that is .002 smaller than your bore. The muskets I used this one for has a bore measurement/diameter of .577 so I size down to a .575.
What tips and advice do you have for casting and what but types do you use?

I would recommend some safety features such as gloves, "gas mask" and safety goggles. Especially working in the dark under a light. Just one big fly or moth dropping into the pan can spoil your day/night. Casting outside is the best option!

I definitely recommend casting outside like in the video. I've had a kamikaze bug go into the pot once when I wasn't near it and there were no issues. It is not a good idea to have water or rain go into the pot or you might wear some. I will say gloves and an apron are a good idea but not sure about a gas mask haha. I know more than a handful of skirmishers that cast indoors which is not something I would do.
