    Thanks for the video, same problem on my 2020 Tracer. I've heard some people talk about the problems with these tires. Waited until service 8000 miles and changed 2 tires. Problems solved and running with much better quality tires. Happy with Michelin Road 5

    I have the exact same issues as you. Same speed, same shimmy. My bike is a 2023 V-Strom 800DE. At 2,400 miles the rear tire was shot. I replaced both with new Shinko 804/805 knobbies (a tire I've run before on many different bikes). Unfortunately I also replaced the rear shock spring for a slightly stiffer spring at the same time. I now have the same handle bar shimmy as you.
    No amount of preload adjustment +/- has fixed it. The bike should have proper ride height, rider sag, etc. I have aluminum panniers but no top box. Increasing front tire pressure seemed to make the most difference.
    My problem must be related to: 1) the new tires or 2) incorrect geometry due to firmer rear shock spring. I may reinstall the OEM front tire today to see if the problem goes away.
    Thanks for the video.

    It's nothing to worry about, keep both hands on the handlebars...
    In 1985 I bought a Yamaha FJ 1100, the same thing, a fast steering bike...
    Nothing on my Tracer yet (Metzeler roadtec (I think)).
    I'm guessing the grip between tire and tarmac varies a bit from side to side due to the tire pattern.
    But I had a Yamaha XS 500 -1978...
    I put on a steering damper....

    Hey, just started watching your videos. 👍
    So I could write a book on this wobble. Been told in the past "Dont let go of the bars" I've had various bikes in the past do this to varying degrees. On the two bikes I installed tapered roller steering head bearings it cured it. on my 2015 FJ-09 I ran the front OEM Dunlop to bald, no wobble. Now a RS2 still no wobble. Might want to try higher front tire press. This also stops cupping. You can also tighten the head bearing a smidge. It's a delicate balance, not too tight where the bike hunts in a straight line, just below. Head bearings will notch in the straight ahead position (especially if loose) eventually and this will cause the wobble.

    • @GrumpyGoat

      Good suggestions for those who still have this issue. It’s cured on my bike and what I did is as far as I’m prepared to go with pursuing a solution. Tire pressures were to spec, 36 psi. I still check from time to time and no issues with this tire which appears to be overcoming any design deficiencies.

    Thank you very much for your video and all the valuable informations. I'm the happy owner of a Tracer 9 ,2021 model and I' m ver yconcerned about the tickling noise from the cam chain. I' m almost 99% sure that the hidraulic camchain tensioner is to be blaim but I was not able to find a manual one (APE) to change it. The local Yamaha dealer/mentenance did not recognise that is a designing flow and I' stuck with that problem/noise. Does your model make the same noise? I would like to know from you because I saw a lot of clips on RUclips that reveale the same problem on this CP3 engine. Thank you in advance for your answer!

    • @GrumpyGoat
      @GrumpyGoat  2 года назад

      Looking at my manuals it does not appear that the cam tensioner is a maintenance item so unless there is a failure it would most likely not get their attention. Noises heard on a new bike tends to be downplayed unless the owner specifically states that they want it checked out and are willing to pay to investigate what might not be a problem.
      How much miles is there on the bike? Chances are that noise you are hearing is normal. I can’t say that I have heard any unusual clicking noise from the cam chain area on my 2019 with 5000 miles on it. Also my engine is different from the 2021 Tracer 9 GT and it may be that the tensioner is different also.
      My advice is to not change the cam chain tensioner unless it actually fails. Aftermarket parts are not necessarily better and for something like this I trust Yamaha engineers more than some third party design shop that might be parasitically looking to make money. At the very least pay to have the dealer check it out and if it has failed that repair would likely be under warranty.

  • @Greddi
    @Greddi Год назад

    The handlebar wobble happens, when the front wheel get few mm lifted, hence why there are multiple causes that makes the bike wobble. Top box, ads weight on the back and lift the front wheel few mm. Wind shield in front and handguard makes downforce in front decent the front mm, ellimating wooble. If you gonna add weight at the back, you need to add something in the front also. Or make the suspension more stiff, so the bike dont tilt back to easily.

    • @GrumpyGoat
      @GrumpyGoat  2 года назад

      Amazing that it would be out of round from the factory. There are so many variables that can cause vibrations in machinery, most have to do with imbalance. If you have a wheel balance you could pull off the wheel and double check the out of roundness quite easily. If the wheel is spoked it should be able to correct the shape. Good luck getting it fixed.

      Thanks for the comment. While the 2 bikes are different, the fact that the Tracer 9 GT you tried and the Tracer 900 GT I have had the same issue suggests that their front end geometry is probably still very similar. Small perturbations such as that imparted from a tire at certain speeds could provoke the shaking as we experienced. So far the problem is still not there at the speeds I commute at, and even at higher speeds even with the top box on. There is no doubt in my mind that a top box would only exacerbate any tendency, whereas I suspect the panniers would have less of effect. Fingers crossed I never see this issue again. Nothing like my R1200RS which has never had a wobble, even beyond 140 with panniers and top box loaded.

      @@TheAskme32 On my bike when I changed the tire to one that I know to be a good tire the wobble problems stopped at all speeds that I typically ride at (up to 100mph). It certainly does not wobble at 40 mph like it did with the D222 tires.
