    The switch from all other lighting sources to LEDs may save energy, but the planners should do more research before they implement the changes. LED streetlights tend to be 4000K in color temperature, which is way too blue to be shining near people's homes all night. Compare that to the high pressure sodium lamps they replaced, which was around 2200K in color temperature (very yellow). We know blue light supresses people's ability to sleep at night, so it really makes no sense to shine so much blue light onto the streets when people are getting ready to sleep.

    LEDs come in every color under the rainbow ..., so why are they only being used in the higher color temperatures of 4000, 5000, 6000 Kelvin or higher ?? High Pressure Sodium come in at around 1800 - 2200 - 2400 Kelvin, which emits a Yellowish Amber color which disperses light more evenly, thus reducing dangerous glare to drivers and pedestrians alike, is not damaging to your retinas and doesn't interfere with the natural world ... you know , animals, insects, plants and trees also need to sleep. I guess it's one of those things where the easiest way to turn a profit is placed above the interest of human health and well-being as well as that of ecosystems everywhere. As far as safety and security is concerned, criminals engage in their favorite activities at ANY time of the day or night. And over-illumumination isn't going to stop them ... only good policing and vigilance by neighbors will. (Actual and Active citizens crime watch, not just signs posted).

      well said Jessica. In India they have installed LED street lighting and there is light tresspass everywhere through the windows and on the terraces and too much of white only light at night. I get itching my mom cant read newspaper in white (cool light ) LED. In india everyone is obsessed with only available "too much white light " LED bulbs. we millions in india dont have awareness of it. even plants , trees need photosynthesis. animals also will be effected like street dogs, cows etc.

      The real reason is actually due to the use of phosphors. LEDs unfortunately cannot just be made to produce any color under the sun. Much of the color changes in novelty/entertainment items are really just mixes of red green and blue diodes. As for LEDs used in lighting, they use blue LEDs since that wavelength constitutes much of the colors within the electromagnetic spectrum. These blue LEDs actually use phosphors as opposed to combinations of RGB because they not only produce the color but they also improve the Color Rendering Index and the overall quality of the light. The problem is phosphors lead to slight efficiency losses and the LEDs running hotter and the warmer the color, the more phosphor is needed to produce the warmer color. The more phosphor, the less efficient the light becomes, so much to the point that some jurisdictions haven't upgraded their HPS lights, particularly in residential areas. Higher color temperatures in LEDs tend to be preferred since they don't use as much phosphor and use more of the blue light from the diodes

      FYI over illumination will make it difficult for criminals to rob places without being spotted but I'd say they should use a warm color of LED lights instead of blue light to prevent pedestrians from getting rund overed by blind drivers.

    Grrr I closed my blinds as per the advice in this clip. I closed my black out curtains over this too. But the harsh glare from the LED still beamed out around the sides. It kept me awake for two years; and I have an increase in migraine and my sleeping patterns have been destroyed. Blue white LED lights have made me very very ill. There needs to be an urgent review, halting of LED installations and serious questions asked. There is a massive failing of responsibility to welfare and health. Raw uncovered LED lights should not be installed everywhere like this. They need a compulsory effective yellow anti-glare filter and should not be left on all night either. They are more dangerous to our health then many realise.

    I am very concerned that possibly LED lightbulbs have caused my basal cell carcinoma on my face. I have olive skin that tolerates sun well. So I have been wondering what caused my skin cancer? I have gone through treatment for the existing lesions and they are going away but there are more emerging! As I stood at bathroom sink and looked up there were 4 super bright LED lightbulbs. I believe it’s either the new 5G tower down the street, my iphone or these LED lights.

  • @djm5k

    Many municipalities today are aware of the health hazards from higher (bluer) color temperature LEDs and are specifying warmer colored (2700-3000K) LEDs in new roadway lighting fixtures especially in residential areas. It is true that the warmer colored LEDs produce lesser lumens than equal wattage bluer diodes, but the warmer colored diodes are still more energy efficient than their incumbent (HID, fluorescent) counterparts. Most of the LED roadway and other exterior lighting I now see currently are mostly warmer colored light, which is not detrimental to human health.

    • @John-bs5ug
      @John-bs5ug 9 месяцев назад

      Those warmer LEDs cost a lot more than HPS, and yet produce less light, and also are more expensive than bluer LEDs, which is why most cities don't use them. Warmer LEDs still suffer from the same issues as cooler ones such as flashing off/on and burning out prematurely.

      Natural sunlight is exactly what we don't want at night - it is too disruptive to our circadian rhythms and our endocrine system. 'Safe' LED lighting would be in the spectrum of 1700-2000K. 'Legal' does not equal 'right' or even 'practical' in this case - same as in NZ where I come from, lower temp LEDs are 'illegal' for streetlighting, which simply means we need a law change.

      The CIE produces recommendations and guidelines for lighting, but they are not legally binding. In many countries, there is only a mininum given for light intensity, but no maximum. Light colour (temperature) is pretty unregulated, though there are some recommandations about changing colour at crossing etc. All these recommendations are based on experience and are usually higher than is believed to be necessary. When installing new LEDs, they will also be some extra light to make sure that the LEDs will be bright enough for a long time (they get dimmer with time). White light is considered to be better for vision for several reasons. Fact is, there is almost no scientific background for the norms.
      The thing is that light planners want to be on the safe side. They believed (and often still believe) that more light is better for the people. They mean well. But they need to learn that light can do harm. Right now, many things are done for healthier indoor light during daytime, but the same thoughts are not applied for light at night. This needs to change to get safer, healthier, and more ecological light.
