    Hi Lucy, that was enjoyable. I had a overnight sleep on a train from Im not cure if it was Calais or Buloigne, to Lourdes. There were 😢6 of us sharing a compartment. When it came time to settle down a staff member came and put the back rests up forming 2 bunks, the seat being the bottom bunk. My Mum in Law had a bottom bunk. I had a top one, not very comfortable, there was wooden thing I could hold on to. There were sick pilgrims on the train. We had a stop outside a hospital St Omer as a vital piece of equipment was needed, should. Have been packed. Then we had a long stop at Paris to this day I don't know why. We arrived at Lourdes station 7am. We had a lovely stay in a nice Hotel 3 meals a day. On a away day we were given a super packed lunch. On the return journey I had to have words with 2 ladies talking in the corridor outside our compartment after settling down for the night. This was after the announcement to no loud talking after lights out. I got on very well with my Mum in Law.❤

      I get on really well with my mother in law too. She's my friend more than anything else! That journey sounds fascinating and memorable. I think that's the thing with night train, you will never forget it x

    Ohh I was on that train a while ago. I shared with a friend and he let me have the top bunk 😂. Very comfortable with none of the traumas you had. We stopped for several hours at Temple Meads. Compared with then the trains have been poshed up. I'm sure I had the same breakfast you had but it was nice.

    Thank you for sharing. A lot of walking in London. Not surprised you had blisters. The lounge is lovely. Plenty of refreshments to choose from. We enjoyed seeing inside the train. The sink is so good. Shame about the thin walls & the door banging but hopefully didn't spoil your experience too much. Best wishes Dave and Dawn ❤️

    I always wanted to do the night sleeper that goes across the west of Scotland. Can’t remember the exact location, I must check it out. I wouldn’t mind The Orient Express day tour from B’ham either. Not sure I would have enjoyed this sleeper experience though Lucy. Tfs 😊

      The Caledonian Sleeper? Me too! Oh god I would love to go on the Orient Express - I can't imagine I will ever get to though unless I win the lottery, I didn't know it ever left Birmingham, I'll have to sneak for a look next time it comes through - look through the windows :)

    • @marybarratt2649
      @marybarratt2649 Месяц назад

      @@throughlucyslens The Orient Express that picks up at Birmingham just travels north somewhere and is a day trip. I could probably afford that but the actual Orient Express that goes overland to various places would be out of my price range, though I would absolutely love it. Yes that's the one, The Caledonian Sleeper, it looks so pretty. Ah, the things I would have done had I been younger AND WISER!!!

    Very good review.
    New subscriber here.
    I took this trip only this weekend and has been on my bucket list for years.
    Such a shame your trip didn't go to plan.
    With the top bunk the host needs to unlock it with a t key. I slept on the top bunk wich was slightly wider and Mrs T was on the bottom.
    I slept really well.
    The shower in Penzance is only the accessable one you have to ask the host there and they'll unlock the ones at the back for you.
    The free snacks at the first class lounge was pretty sub par tbh. biscuits and some free fruit.
    At least you can take as many cans of soda or water as you like too.

      So glad to hear you had a great time - and thanks so much for the sub, really appreciate it! I think with my trip it was just a string of bad timing .. terrible weather .. would I do it again? Absolutely in a heart beat! and thanks for the tip on the showers :)

      But that’s not the point. It’s the fact that you have the experience of sleeping on a train. Also, I’m someone who hates flying so it’s a no brainer that I would much rather take the train. Not only that, it depends where you want to go. Because sometimes the cost of getting from the airport can be expensive. So id still rather take the train

    I did the Caledonian express to Edinburgh the September before you and I loved it so much
    You don't get access to a lounge though which was annoying on both ends
    We were also directly next to the toilet in our room both ways which had it's advantages (no long trek) and disadvantages (noise from others using it) but we both sleep with musicozies on so we weren't that disturbed
    You don't get enough time to sleep though on these trains imo

    • @throughlucyslens
      @throughlucyslens  7 месяцев назад

      Yes I agree. I was really tired when I arrived, wouldn't say I was "ready for the day" but I enjoyed the experience so much and I've always wanted to go on the Caledonian express. It's a lovely way to di that trip up to Scotland - but I agree not enough sleep!

    God, I hate door bangers. My downstairs neighbours do that. You're sitting chilling and then "BANG!" the whole building shakes. Your noisy neighbour knew. Of course he knew. He just didn't care. (BANG! There go my neighbours again) He's one of those entitled people who have no consideration for anyone around them.

    • @throughlucyslens
      @throughlucyslens  6 месяцев назад

      My bloody pressure must have been buzzing, I was so annoyed I couldn't sleep! There's just something so unsettling about an unplanned BANG isn't there - my mom was obsessed with closing doors quietly and said "think of the door frame please" even today I'm so careful not to slam!

    What a rip-off. The weather should be free, but they make you pay in winter by withholding services, and they make you pay in summer by jacking their prices up. I agree with you --- the lack of decent food was pathetic.
