O-H-I-O Porter greetings 🇺🇸 I noticed the hood mirror right away! I know what that’s for!! The brief walk around was good at the beginning. Is that a Dorsey trailer as well? I’ve pulled a few of them in my day & I’m not that old. My dad bought several to use for storage & transporting tires & wheels to Ohio. What a unique sound! I love the old trucks, but even more so when connected to an old trailer as well! Do you keep this truck in a garage or barn? That mirror is for looking at the sparks from the exhaust. I’ve heard many stories about the old trucks & the sparks they made. I come from a trucking family & have heard many unique stories from the drivers. It looks like both of the tattletale boxes work. It has been a while since I’ve seen 2 of them in a truck. Good stuff! Thanks for sharing! Blessings! 🥰😎✌️

Hello you must do more videos on this truck I love it. Please tell us the story of this truck. I could listen to the sound of that Cummings 220 all day.
Even back then, Kenworth didn't mount the mirrors on the doors. I've driven Kenworths and Peterbilts, both excellent trucks but I prefer KW just for that reason.
Theres a piece of history! 1 yr older than me to. Not one but two tachographs! Let me guess, 220 Cummins? Those straight pipes would be hard to live with over the road thou.

Great video about a great truck! I'm a model builder and would like to build one of these early Kenworths. Unfortunately, here in Germany - and also on the English-speaking Internet - I can't find important reference values for this. Are you able to identify three measurements that I need? Width on grille 5. Width and height of a front window I hope I'm not causing too much work for you. Best regards@@thesteelcowboy1621
The convex mirror on front of the hood, I read those were so the driver could see the top of the stack. Too much black smoke meant to drop a gear. This information was from a web site about the Duel truck, which had that mirror.
They used the stack mirror to monitor the flame coming out on non turbo trucks. When the flame disappeared you dropped a gear is what the old timers told me.
Sounds and looks really good, dude! Also, you said in the description that this truck has worm drive axles. Do you happen to know what gear ratio they're running? And also what's your opinion on the worm drive axles over the hypoid drive axles? Again, good looking and sounding truck!
They were called tattle tales. 1 is your mph the other is your tach. The clock in the middle is your old school e log. You inserted a white round paper disk in every morning, wound the clock up, set the time and go to work. Inside there's a scribe that marks your every rpm, speed, and if you're running on time, speeding or over reving the motor. At the end of the day you'd turn that into your dispatcher and he could see how your day went all from the scribes on the paper.
@thesteelcowboy1621 WOW, that is amazing... and very cool. I remember seeing these tattle-tales on the old GM Buses as a kid growing up when we would go on Charter trips.. as a kid I'd love to sit up front listen and watch as the driver would rev-match and shift that screaming soprano Detroit.. I took it all in, the sounds, the smells, professionalism of the driver.. the art of work.. different time and mentality to be sure - and your beautiful rig reminds me of that sir. Thank you
@thesteelcowboy1621 It doesn't seem that long ago, but it was... oh, and one more childhood favorite your rig reminds me of; the TV series "Movin On" You plan on restoring the whole truck or just keep as is? That Mercury bunk is beautiful and very interesting! You got in from the outside, no pass-thru from inside the cab. Did Mercury also make trailers and campers?
I couldn't bring myself to cut a hole in the cab to crawl in the bunk, so I put plywood over the hole on the inside with vinyl interior. The outside I covered with aluminum. Mercury never made anything but sleepers as far as I know. This bunk was built at the 1st of their 4 locations, Bell California. According to 1 Mercury historian guy, this was the oldest Mercury he's ever come across. I've decided to leave the truck alone with its current paint job. The truck brand new was all red, rims frame cab and hood. Originally bought by United Truck Lines of Spokane Washington. I have all paperwork and owners on the truck. Had a Buda diesel when new and was supposedly recalled to have a cummins 220 installed due to issues with Buda engines.
They are cLled tattle tales, which were e logs of the day. You inserted a paper disk inside, set the time on the clock, then went to work. They would scribe a line on the disk for every rom, speed and time of where you are. So when you turned them into your boss they could see if you were on time, over reving a truck or speeding etc.
Ones a tach, the other a speedo. Also you would insert a round card in them. There is a scrib inside each tattle tale gauges. So it can monitor your rpm shifting speed and time between the two of them. You would put a card in each at the beginning of your shift and turn them Into your boss at the end of the day. They could then see if you were over reving the motor, speeding and making your stops on-time. 1950s style e long. Lol
Funny how the tachograph cards got coffee spilled on and fell in mud puddle. Also, we had another brand with a locking cover. They all got locked with no cards and then all the keys mysteriously disappeared.
