- Women in informal settlements and low-income housing neighbourhoods in Bengaluru face challenges like inadequate infrastructure, limited access to healthcare, sanitation, and safe neighbourhoods. Climate change is making it worse with extreme weather, water scarcity, and air pollution, intensifying their health risks, including respiratory illnesses and malnutrition.
Women also disproportionately bear the load of caregiving, creating even more physical and emotional stressors, as they navigate unstable environments while supporting their families. Deep-rooted patriarchal norms and shifts in the city’s ecology worsen these difficulties.
Recognising these challenges, and taking a first step towards a long journey of addressing them, on December 6th and 7th, 2024, Socratus, in partnership with Mahila Housing Trust, organised a Citizen's Jury for the women of Shantinagara (Ward 117) and Sudamanagar (Ward 118) in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
