A good comparo. Yeah, there will never be the “perfect kit”, yet the individual will buy the kit that fits their needs the best. I have the ICON set and for me it’s been the knees of the bee. Thanks for the heads-up about the ICON 2.0 version coming out. That gives me a plan. We can thank Craftsman for its flash clearance sale of the V-series and to leave us scratching our heads about the future improvements and availability of the V-series tools.
I waited MONTHS for the ICON set to come back in stock and when it finally did I was able to pick it up on sale and got it for like $30. I am not really happy with it because like you said no sockets. I was putting together a little tool bag to keep in the car and I ended up getting a small set of 3/8 socket set with a ratchet to complete my bag. Along with a air compressor, a small jump pack and some tire plug kits. It is a work in progress. LOL. Thanks for sharing all of these, i had no idea that there were so many different brands of these kits out there.
Hahaha, SAME !!! I almost went to eBay to buy one because my local store was always out of stock. I'm curious to see what will be included when their bigger set gets introduced with the sockets. They make combination jump packs/air compressors now ... I'm getting one to test for the channel in a couple of days, so we'll see if it's worth adding to the "go bag" Thanks for watching and commenting !!!
The best mini tool set is the one that I assembled: 1//4in compact flex-head ratchet, 4in extension (with magnet inside), 37 bits of assorted sizes (10 of them "impact rated"), 10 sockets (5-14mm) 2 bit holders, 1 small 1/4in extension, 10mm 1/4in flex-head socket. All in a very neat, sturdy home-built 3D box. 😎
That sounds like a great set !!! Do you have pictures that you can share of your 3D-printed box? I'm starting to lean towards making my own set too, but I don't have a good box or box design that can be printed.
I have that craftsman v-series kit in my personal vehicle. First week I had it, I used it to replace a headlamp bulb, it's a nice kit. I managed to tetris some power torque SAE chrome nano-sockets in there just incase. I agree it's... Odd that the ratchet and driver handle just sit loose in the case instead of being retained, but it's not a deal breaker, I'm pretty good at remembering to open the case right-side-up I also have that larger kobalt kit, I bought as a semi-disposable kit to leave in my work truck for the rare few occasions I need to use it. I had the same problem with the ratchet being ridiculously hard to remove from the case, I used a dremel to cut some finger grooves in it to deal with that. Overall I think it's a good value proposition even if it's not the greatest quality.
Thanks for confirming that I wasn't going crazy !!! lol I thought I was doing something wrong with both the Craftsman V-Series and the Kobalt sets. Great idea on the finger grooves for the Kobalt set, I'm going to have to borrow that :) Thanks again for watching and commenting!!
In the V-series. It doesn't lock. It's made by same company that makes icon. The loose plastic is a cheap spacer. Buy a 15mm and turn it upside down and put on the driver. Fits great. Also, I put the craftsman flex head in there instead. Also. This kit is very very similar to the new icon coming out
Thanks for those tips !!! I really wanted to like the V-Series because it's metric only ... and I think I might have a flex head ratchet already, didn't think about swapping it out until you mentioned it !!! Thanks again!!
Man this guy is hard to please. The small kobalt is the most versatile kit in the bunch. Talks about wanting versatility, then complains about having both metric and SAE
LOL ... yeah, I've been told that I'm a difficult customer before :) I guess I should have said that I want the most versatility in the smallest footprint, but only for the stuff that I regularly work on. So for me, I can't remember the last time I needed anything SAE, so that's just extra weight and space.
A the meme tool kit 😂. Always have compromises, never leaves you happy. Mine collects dust, never needed an edc socket kit. Most of my vehicles have a real tool kit(self-made). I've only used my kit about 3 times, and the edc kit still collects dust.
For $5 HF had their ratcheting screw driver on sale which comes with a sleeve of metric and SAE sockets and during their Icon ratchet sale I got a 1/4 drive cyclops for $20 but there again a case for it all is difficult to come by but in my opinion the flex head and cyclops (if you watch Hand Tool Rescue he uses cyclops heads on a lot of his machinery disassembly and assembly very effectively) The Klein starter kit is also VERY nice with a beefier ratchet that is pass through sockets. None of the Craftsman sets really impress me and I understand backdrag is REALLY bad on a lot of the new V series, which is a shame as we have some 40 year old Craftsman V USA made ratchets that are uhhhmazing. You are very right in that the perfect set doesn't exist but the Icon is close.
I think I'm coming to the realization that the case is the most critical piece !!! lol So I might need to get my friend to help me design a 3D printed case to fit my specific needs. I'm tempted to go pick up a Klien kit to check out, it's been mentioned a couple of time. Yeah, I agree, the quality of Craftmans has really gone down ... I hunt down the vintage stuff at garage sales and swap meets. lol
With sales, you can get the icon set, Hercules security but set, and both of the Hercules magnetic nutset sets for about $70. Not super compact, but that is everything I've ever needed for 1/4 inch and both of the Herc sets can go on my impact. Warrior bit kits can be had for half that without impact rating too.
Thanks for suggesting the netsets ... I never thought to pair those instead of the 1/4 sockets. The only thing is the netset has a long neck, so not great for tight spaces. The 1/4 Pittsburg sockets were just $8 this weekend, but they were not impact rated like the Makita ones.
Facom RIPico in my day bag and a Tone BRFS27 in my grab and go work tool bag that complements a 3/8” socket set. If the Wera dropped the ratchet and screwdriver and adopted the larger 1/4” flex head driver from Tone and VIM then that would be the ultimate solution.
Ohhh, I really like the Facom !!! It's exactly what I'm looking for - small footprint, hex bits and a few sockets, and the flex head ratchet ... but $100? Hope they go on sale!! lol

I have several different versions of these small tool kits. My favorite wrench is the one from the Icon kit. As you said the Icon set needs a set of sockets to really complete it. I have a Gearwrench version that I like a lot- however the case is cheapo plastic and the lid opens at the worst times. I realize the Wera is stupid expensive but can be found on sale around $70 and really is the best set. You just can't find anything else with the same quality as the Wera in such a compact package. Wera is just too convenient to throw in a bag and have all the basics in one kit.
$70 seems very reasonable for the Wera set, and it's the most complete set that I've seen, although I"m not sure I need all those bits!! lol The Icon case is actually really nice. It feels rugged enough to handle all the bumps of everyday use ... just wish I could squeeze a few sockets in it :)
@@kintsugimotoI have the Wera and added Wera sockets there are no skips. Also use a rubber band to hold a small 1/4" ames rotohead ratchet. That's sort of the direction that I'm leaning towards, but the Icon ratchet doens't "click" into the V-Series case. I might try to get something 3-D printed that I can glue in there there :)
