  • @tts626

Really cool! I was wondering. Is it possible to do Judo randori with more of a self-defense approach ...even if given that your partner may be doing it for competition training as most tend to do? I've always been interested in Judo, but it just seems that the there is too much willingness to sacrifice one's own balance and "safety" for the sake of scoring a point.
Just using one of the randori partners for example. At 1:08, White doesn't even bother to take Blues back (or tries and move on), which could then easily lead to a nice rear naked choke. At 1:15 Blue doesn't bother finishing with a solid pin. And at 1:28 Blue falls on his own arm, which could result in injury if he wasn't on the mat.
I know the sport aspect of Judo is huge, but what about Budo? Didn't Kano Sensei develop Judo also as a means to safely practice practical self-defense techniques? That he removed unsafe techniques so that one could train with more resistance, in an "alive" manner as it's now known. That's how I understand it, but I'm not all that well read on the subject. Thanks!

      IRAM's Wrestling Highlights
      I trained under E.C.Ahn 9th.
Tae Kwon Do in the 80's.
We had about the same size room!
I think it probably helps actually, because in a competition, you'll be in a larger place. Those walls being close in may actually stimulate muscle memory, of where the boundry of the square is.
And also in a real life altercation, you will also have to learn to fall against a wall at different angles, maybe. Hopefully not! Lol
Most places train you for competitions, you learn how to take the fall on the mat only!
So could be another flip side of the coin to it! Best of both worlds!
      Just an opinion!
