This performance is even more impressive if you've seen/heard the original by Kiiara... it uses a lot of sampling/looping/electronic distortion, especially in the "Roof is fallin', let me love..." refrain. She doesn't perform that part live... it's all sampled and played from a keyboard.
    Mitch: "Hold my beer". :)

Yes! I had never heard of Kiiara or "Gold" when I watched this. After I heard the original, my appreciation doubled.

Kevin is a beast! One song is nothing for him- he beatboxes every song in their concerts- usually an hour or so.,. When they’re on tour playing almost every night

I always find their series of “Evolution” videos remarkable, especially for Kevin. Constantly changing rythems, and tones, he really sets the group in motion and (with Avi and Matt) drives it all forward. Brilliant only starts to describe his ability!

Everything about this one is 🔥!
Mitch's ease of transition between registers.
Avi and Kevin killing it on bass and rhythm.
Scott and Kirstie on the background with their tight harmonies and perfect use of dynamics.

I just love your reactions! Your comments always come from a place of knowledge rather than simply ‘I liked that’, which also a valid reaction. This song is one of my favorites, and I’m sad they never released a recording of it on any of their albums. Oh well. And of course your comment about Home Free and PTX is right. I can prefer one over the other because I prefer the music genre, but both are incredibly talented. One minor note when you watch the competitions on the Sing Off (I’m so happy you’re going to do that!) is that Home Free had been performing as a group for a while prior to entering the competition; Pentatonix become a 5-some two days prior to the audition for the show. ‘The Trio’ had been singing together for years, but Kevin and Avi were new additions.
Kevin and Avi were roommates when they first came together, so they would sing together. In one video Kevin commented that they became so cohesive that he and Avi knew when the other one needed a breath or had to take a quick break during a song that the other one could cover for them. Enjoy the beginnings. I know I’ll enjoy seeing you react to them. (I apologize for being so long-winded!)

This one just gets me every time. It still amazes me. I just love this one. This group is just incredible. Once you get into K.O.'s solo work, you'll start to see how damn talented Kevin is. Every member is amazing.

They make it seem so easy !! Becoming a real pentaholic , now you're going to react to their beginning and see where they came from .
I agree with you about the difference between PTX , Superfruit and Home Free, I love them all and their music !!

Kevin is a human metronome! There is a segment in one video of their 2018 Christmas tour where Kevin is actually sounding like a metronome while the rest of the group is harmonizing their timing with him.. Beatboxing is his passion.

Yeah! sing off performances are great! The timing on this song (Gold) at the end where they are splitting the lyrics the timing is crazy, if one person is even a little off time it would be so noticeable. That is one of the things I love about pentatonix is their attention to detail when composing their music.

This is just 🔥! I can’t say anything that other commentators haven’t already said about this! And yes, Kevin is truly a master of everything he does!! His talents is endless!!
Something to keep in mind before watching the PTX “Sing Off” series, they sang together for the first time the day before their auditions, so the “Sing Off” really shows them learning each other’s styles and growing together to form the amazing acapella group they are today. It is truly an evolution of Pentatonix on the show. You’ll see how they were pretty good starting out, but still kind of fumbling around to find their style, their niche, which was pretty challenging considering some of the genres of music they were having to sing for the show. Still, they had a style that had never really been heard before and as you know from watching these later videos, they have and continue to succeed and blow our minds with their talents.
I look forward to watching the PTX and Homefree “Sing Off” series with you!!

Great reaction! This one is so chill. For me, one of their strongest skills is taking their time to just be there with the music. Some of that comes from Avi and Kevin, whose classical training brings a kind of steadiness to any song. I'm looking forward to your reactions to the Sing-Off. Their first performance on the show was their first public performance ever as a group of 5. There are 14 performances, and I'll be there all the way!

One thing I have to say before you do The Sing-Off is keep in mind that the three main singers is where this whole dream began. They called it the trio and they have been friends since they were small children. Active from an early age in community theater and singing as much and as often as they could possibly do so for the sheer love of music. After they went in separate directions when two of them graduated from high school I don't think they thought that this is going to get started up again. And then a friend Scott had made a college named Ben Bram I told him he had seen the trio on RUclips and they were good. He thought they should try out for The Sing-Off but they needed to have 5 people and specifically a bass and beatboxer because it's acapella and that's what they were missing. That's where Avi and Kevin joined the trio and they changed the name 2 Pentatonix for the pentatonic scale. I don't think it occurred just got that they were also five members which Penta would refer to. And The Sing-Off is the first work Pentatonix did together! Now remember it takes them a couple songs to become more cohesive and know what they could do and pull from each different member. It's the fourth performance when they lock it in and know who they are as a group. Mitch was actually in high school still during The Sing-Off. He's the guy with dark hair. And he used to singing his lower register as if you didn't realize he had a higher register that was really beautiful! So it's interesting to go back and watch and they do blow your mind after they get it figured out

One suggestion if I may...do NOT skip the judges comments! Lol...not only are they great and viewing them will spare you from the faceless masses of the interwebs...but...it will be fascinating to see your thoughts vs theirs given your musical knowledge and experience. Thanks and keep up the great work! :)

IMPORTANT: If you're going to go back to the Sing-Off--for both Home Free and PTX--PLEASE be sure to use the videos by mrduckbear. He shows the entire segment--from the short introductory video before the performance through the song, the judges' comments, and Nick Lachey's transition to the next segment. PLEASE be sure to watch to the end of the video; sometimes (not always) there's a brief backstage interview with Pentatonix. There's one in particular that you won't want to miss! And all the extras give valuable insight into who these kids were back then and the influences they received at the start of their career.

Ready to permanently give up on Pentatonix because of that aweful sound quality, you mean? Based on that video I thought Mitch sounded awful live, until I saw other videos to make up for that impression. To recommend that video means to convince people that Pentatonix sounds horrible live.

Love PTX because they are more in my "lane", but Home Free is a great group - they are like siblings who just have different tastes. My husband likes classic rock, my sister loves ska, my brother listens to punk, and I listen to everything they, my children, and my students like, but PTX is mine! I'm really glad to hear you are going to do the Sing Off performances - It just adds to how many PTX videos I get to share with you ;-) Thanks for this one!
